Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 8 and nobody cares. Probably because no one used it, amirite? Was there anything worth remembering in this wildly unpopular version of Windows?

  2. Nah people just hated it

  3. The first time I resumed my Win 8 install from standby, I was completely stuck because there was no hint as to how to get past the lock screen.

Getting any of the things like the charm bar to appear without a touchscreen was an exercise in frustration because IT DIDN'T TELL YOU IT EXISTED.

  4. I’m still running 8.1 on my Desktop PC with an i9-9900k.

  5. I absolutely hated windows 8 on my devices.

  6. IDK, I barely noticed windows 8.1 metro interface (after some period of using metro apps under a wow-effect), but subjectively, on my laptop with shitty 1.8 GHz dual-core AMD E-something CPU with integrated graphics, it ran much better than win7.

  7. There were some games and other apps that were pre-installed on my cheap and now quite old samsung windows 8 notebook. It was purchased at Best Buy for my 16th birthday. There was also a nice painting application that I played with. I also used it to learn some video editing and music production. I didn't have internet access at the time so I just played with the applications that were installed on the device. Eventually when I did get access to the internet I was trying out a bunch of free to play games on this laptop and then I saw a War Thunder ad that came up as I was watching some youtube back in 2013. Funny enough, I am still playing this game to this very day and I never imagined that windows 8 would have had such an impression on me.

  8. I dont get the hate for W11 search. Never found my stuff so fast before

  9. Windows 8 was the most virus resistant version of windows ever

  10. i loved windows 8 at its peak

  11. Windows 8 + Classic Shell was the best way to use Windows 8.

  12. Bad on desktop. Good on touchscreen.

  13. I had forgotten about all the weird stuff Win8 did because the first thing I did when I got it was installing Classic Shell. What a wild time this was!

  14. Windows Server 2012 R1 was the worst 😂

  15. Windows 8 was like Mr Garrison's "IT" from South Park. Great ideas, very poorly executed. But hey, it's better than flying.

  16. Introduced modern great features like:
Skydrive- dont like, dont use, have to turn off every udate as it tries to sync
Windows store- im 50/50 on, cool apps, but has made other things like phantasy star online and minecraft harder to use compared to what i was use to.
    Live tiles- exists
Universal search- hate it, literally ruined local search as it will always try internet first.
    Modern apps- see windows store
    Refresh and reset- cool
Settings sync- dont have enough windows 10PC to warrant it.
    Improved task manager- cool

  17. Windows 8.1 was great, used a lot in my working pc. But the "8 version" was meh

  18. "someone has forgotten about keyboard" is a statement I've heard regularly from the GNOME fanboys, which has a UI philosophy to hide everything from the plain sight, just like the Windows 8
GUI's been around for 40+ years on personal computers and we still have to live with the idiotic renditions of them

  19. Another reason that many people did not embrace the 'Touch innovation' was the 'early adopter's tax'. Most people simply do not have money trees in their yards.

  20. And it didn't required a SSD because of 100% usage bug.

  21. As a desktop user, it was perfectly usable, but I found the disconnect between the traditional desktop and the Metro UI jarring.
For me, the tiles only functioned as an additional area for shortcuts.

  22. An OS that tried to force a part baked touchscreen interface onto users, add in the stupidity of Mystery Meat navigation where nobody knew what was going to happen until the action was started. A dumb duality between real applications and the nonsense of "metro apps" which didn't share data or functionality between them. The usual half baked mess of windows applications that still hadn't been updated didn't help either.

The underlying Operating System itself, notably after SP1, was quite good however the desktop shell interface was cretinously appallingly incompetent.

  23. Not as bad as Vista!

No, it was better for tablets.

  24. I have Windows 8.1 on one of my computers as I still have defunk programs that can not run on windows 10 or 11.
Those old Programs are used rarely, but the compatible Windows 10 and 11 versions are just a waist a time to relearn as they have a large learning curve.
I'm not desperate if windows 8.1 crashes, but if I can reinstall it quickly to run the old defunk Program, what a time saver.
My question is, I can not seem to find any info as to if I can reinstall and re-activate Windows 8.1
I know that I could just wait for the crash to happen and find that out then, but why is it so hard to find out if I can re-activate on the old same machine.

  25. What is your Point Linus?

  26. I’ve had windows 8 for about 3 years and it had no problems, it worked fine and maybe better than windows 10

  27. Microsoft has a company just has no vision. They keep hoping on the trend.

  28. I loved 8.1 when I had to upgrade to windows 10 I hated it for a bit cause I was so used to navigating 8

  29. Windows 8 was the first time that Microsoft did ANYTHING innovative with an operating system. All previous windows versions were an imitation of the original Mac OS GUI.

  30. i miss charms bar

  31. Windows 8 was my reason to switch to Linux. It took several years before I was ready to go back and even consider checking out Windows 10 (which turned out to be ok and I still use it).

  32. I had a touch screen laptop at the time and while windows 8 was not amazing, it was great for specifically touch screen styled devices. The ability to switch between touch style and normal style desktops really helped as well. I visioned windows 8 as an alternative windows OS rather than the successor of windows 7. 100% a lost opportunity and i hope they approach a touch focused windows OS in the future

  33. Windows 9?

  34. Window 8 is for laptop with finger sensible touchscreen, which most people hate to mix between laptop and phone

  35. I don't care about win8 I am worried how to deal with funking win11 aftere 🤢 2025

  36. I just downloaded a mod called StartIsBack and I loved it.

  37. Windows 8 was why I moved to Linux 🤣

  38. У меня Windows 7 стоит, и никто её не сможет удалить и заблокировать, но нужно разобраться сначало с системой.

  39. 0:52 bloatware list of windows, except the task manager that is great and better than older ones

  40. Nice Hebrew Linus! Did you learn that at Intel's factory?

  41. I remember having a Nokia 920 in the 12th grade and it still is the best phone I ever had

  42. 8.1 was legitimately good. I worked for a company that supported external clients at the time of win 8 and they were determined to get win 8 and despite our warnings they did it anyway and their business stopped functioning for 2 weeks.

The USB to serial dongle which communicated with a diesel tank used to fill their rental trucks that required drivers just didn't work with win 8 and we had to order 10 of them from the US to UK because startech couldn't tell us which batch worked with win 8 and the shipping time was terrible.

Maybe listen to your IT guy when he tells you something is a bad idea.

  43. 5:30 EHY, I USED AND LOVED WINDOWS TO GO
It was very useful for bypassing locks on my school provided laptop haha, i just ran it in my own ssd.
Sadly i think it's deprecated now and it ended up destroying about 2GB of photos (12 originally but 10 were recovered) so i switched to Linux that has no problem booting off of USB

  44. Win 11 is pretty much the same as 10 now. Only thing you can't do is right click the task bar and open task manager. Rip.

  45. oh boy i never knew it was this innovative but only if (as u said) features of 8.1 were in there by default many might have changed to it

  46. I love how death of something is spoken more than it's whole life combined

  47. After 9 months struggling to get used to Windows 8, I gave the box to a friend and bought a Mac Mini. I kept the Samsung monitor though.
