The basic necessity of water will be the lifesaver in any situation. LifeStraws and the Sawyer brand are the best for personal water filters. Remember to get one for each person in your group. Each filter will make clear and clean water at 500 gallons plus per straw.
Fire should be your next worry. Having several types of survival fire starters is a no-brainer.
Survival blankets, sleeping bags, and shelter made of Mylar take very little space, especially if you seal them in a vacuum sealer. Having shelter from the elements could be critical in a survival situation. Mylar is the way to go.
Having food in your bugout bag could be a life saver. Just have a few nutritional bars, mixed nuts, and a source of protein, like beef jerky.
