Running the menu at lower res is common, even the Nvidia Shield does this. Video content uses native decoding hardware, which then is able to output true 4k directly
for emby plex and jellyfin there are ROKU devices for cheap and it just works. i got them for 18€ on amazon
just be very cautious if something is made by Them. and reason why we need to ban huawee, tiktoc etc p/s – lots of them are already in our homes like cctv, electrical items, smart home iot etc

I repurposed an old Android TV box as a Squeezebox music player for my bathroom.
I got one of these boxes for Linux. I didn't care about android and I was able to play SuperTux on my now Arch Linux ARM rockchip box. (And code/compile code for Linux or arduino)
Im an android user and had alot of android tv boxes. Ever since I went with the apple 4k tv box I never looked back its just the best on the market.
We are using an android box (Mecool brand) in our living room for 5 years now i didnt encounter any problem, but if i have a money i will buy a used pc in a marketplace and turn it to linux media pc or chromebox rather than buying this android boxes cuz the prices are close, sorry for my bad english.

For me its still worth buying, you can install anything but yeah need technical knowledge for that and you need to know what are you doing. I use this device for my cheap smart router by install openwrt, I can use for example loadbalance my internet connection with that and work great no issue for years now
There is nothing 'morally ambiguous' about copyright theft. It would be akin to saying that murder is not an ideally moral practice. The corejava thing is definitely a potential worry. Mind you, the number of unknown Ip addresses that Microsoft has Windows reporting back to is also a concern. Most of these boxes do actually support 4k. The reported resolution was likely the resolution of the GUI, not the content that can be played. So whilst this piece has some validity, it is also sloppy in places. As for the 'elderly' comment', such stupid stereotyping is nauseating at best.

I been using a few boxes for over a decade with no problems. I don't put anything important on it! I use Adguard and a VPN and it blocks a ton of crap trying to escape the box. Also just don't allow it to access your local network.
Just buy the ones that don't have cracked apps running on them. You get Ines that are "Google certified" and those are fine

luckily, the do have a build for Android TV.
