Any time the government says "It isn't for X though!" and doesn't pass an amendment that would prevent X… They're lying to your face and will just wait a few months or years before doing anything with it. Politicians are the physical embodiment of lies.
Here in Germany people who are streaming on a scheduled bases needs to buy a broadcasting license. The one that radio and TV broadcasters needs to buy. The legal reasoning was: "A legal person or company who have a scheduled broadcasting programm needs a broadcasting license based on §xyz of germans broadcasting bla bla. It does not matter on what medium or what content it is". Basically it was the successful attempt of the public and private broadcasting lobby trying to dump their "new rivals".
You know I could even understand if there were some requirements to fulfill, like you guys in Canada now do have. But here in germany it's just paying a big amount of money to continue streaming without being sued by the government. The ones who can't, yaeh my bad.
But hey, here are some fasct about Internet and germany, to understand it a bit more.
– our former chanclor Mrs. Merkel called the internet "new territory" … in the year 2013.
– on average the availability of (50MBit+) internet connection in Germany is worse compared to Ukraine in it's current state. And this is really not a joke.
– doing public service things on the internet? No, not possible. I do not mean, it's slow or has a lot of bugs. There is simply no digital service.
– mobile internet? Sure, if you are willing to pay 30€ / month for 5g … for max 8 GB download … if 5G is even available outside bigger cities. Tbh. it's getting better, but slowly.

This is an infringement on free speech. Just think about it, when the state tells you, what you "should" watch, what you "should" listen to. All this leads to what you are "allowed" to think. I am so disappointed in the Canadian government.

I didn't get the point about total cost of ownership. It sounds smart but it makes no sense. I have needed iOS for work, so I bought iphone 12 mini for 500€ on sale. I am changing my phone every 2 years, so they are still have value to being sold, so total cost of ownership for me will be around 100 euro a year. I am pretty sure that iphone will not loose too much value in my region over these two years and I will be able to flip it for 300$. According to Linus I have bought old phone at a full price, but new one of these was Around 900€? So the cost of ownership during that two years would have been at least twice as much for me. And it's not like we are in 2011 when phone preformance is rapidly improving. Especially it is not relevant for iphones cause you can't do sh*it on it. 2 years old iphone looks same and works same as a new one. So I don't get it

To me the WAN show and other LTT content DOES feel Canadian simply because it's not very political and it's lighthearted in a way that little American content is these days. Before I ever actually heard they were Canadian I think I assumed it.
