Plouffe’s old Asus VG27AQ monitor broke after three years of service, just out of warranty. We’re not sure WHY it’s power cycling, but a new mainboard is inexpensive enough and we’re comfortable tinkering with electronics… what’s the worst that could happen?

  1. Hey folks, if you're encountering a similar problem and your monitor has an external power brick, it may be worth replacing that first. These often fail before the monitor's internals, and are much simpler to replace. If you're having trouble finding an exact replacement, often you can get away with using one with EXACTLY the same voltage and the same or higher amperage. YMMV though; LMG isn't assumes no liability, this is not financial advice, etc :p

  2. omg linus u made me laugh so hard after dropping that screwdriver XD

Linus should just change his branding to "We were known for dropping things. We are proud to say, we still are."

  3. Buy a Samsung monitor instead. Mine it's been working for 10 years…

I had no idea that linus was an openly gay transgender until recently, he tours the country in drag for pride month, yikes…

  4. Linus drops something counter?

  5. If you replace one thing at a time, the source of a problem (lets say power section) can break new compontest. So you replace main board but it's immediately broken by power supply. Then you replace power supply, but your new main board is already broken. If you don't know what's the couse of the problem you should replace all compontents that you have at once.

  6. FYI in Europe if that was a normal 2 year warranty they should have accepted for repair anyway as the warranty applies to defects you discover during the warranty period, even if you contact them afterwards… They might fight it, but that's how the law works

  7. Powercycling is easy to ts.

  8. if it's getting worse and worse, I think it's a chip overheating problem, something is shorted inside or so.

  9. RAM, powersupply or DNS. It's always DNS

  10. I mean 11:18, 11:36 and 11:55 are all pretty accurate snapshots of the experience of repairing your own stuff XD
14:11 Hey, with how fast chat goes on YT or Twitch you honestly could probably get a legit benefit from the higher refresh rate lol

  11. I LOVE this type of video. It's fun, but also really informative, because I ain't got the money to just buy a bunch of parts and do this shit, but if I ever get an issue like that with my monitor, I'll know what to do.

  12. Idk guys…. The more i see Asus products teared apart the more i’m thinking of avoiding them in the future… kinda bad build quality if you ask me

  13. Finally! The intro comes back!

  14. I know this isn't just because of Asus but man I am absolutely NEVER buying another one of their products. Unless they actually start being a better company and take drastic changes I'll never be a customer again.

  15. Damn i hope mine will not die 😀 as quickly or at least within warranty time ( just bought one 2 weeks ago )

  16. 0:26 "What's the worst that could happen" ! 😂😂 ! Linus ! ! ! ! 😂

  17. Same issue on my Asus monitor. Some one help me replaced a chip on the board and everything works. Costed me $80

  18. wait, what did they do to fix it? they said new pwr, new motherboard. did they replace the power button?

  19. I just thought about adding ambilight, because my model does not have it but has holes for it. Try replacing what you can. Don't you have better things to play with, like some API?

  20. I had a Samsung 245T that had issues turning on after ~7 years I think? After reading around I pulled it apart to figure out what the caps were on the power board and ordered replacements as similar as was available. That thing was interesting to figure out how to get into it. I basically learned to solder on a $700 CAD monitor with really bad tools. Stay away from cheap irons. It was still working for another 7 years until I replaced it. I did the same repair for a friend who also had a 245T that developed the same issues. It also held up until it was replaced later on.

  21. "Hey Linus, may I ask if you have an extra PC there? It doesn't matter if it's an old one. badly need it and for my sister, who's studying online. anyways love your videos 🙂

  22. I purchased a Asus portable monitor, 1 month into ownership I dropped my cell phone on the screen and it broke the lcd, I sent it out for repair and Asus told me it was too expensive to repair and that I would have to purchase a new replacement @ $400.00. I asked for the broken monitor back, and spent a few days trying to find a replacement lcd, purchased one on ebay for $100, it was the wrong model, cannot return. Then purchased another one on Amazon for $150 and it worked. Taking apart the monitor and unclipping the old lcd and clipping in the new lcd was also easy, I would give it a 9/10 for simplicity, so with trial and error I saved $150, if I had the correct lcd the first time I would have saved $250 compared to purchasing new. Pretty sad that asus was not willing to help.

  23. no matter what, its shitty that your monitor dies a week out of warranty and its not covered. Manufacturers should learn about good will. Imagine they covered it. Then the customer feels they did him a favor, he is going to tell everyone. Which means more sales. But they choose, don't cover it, so he tells everyone. then everyone thinks what im thinking. Im a mechanic and have put motors in cars 40k miles past warranty because you could tell they took care of it, its called good will.

  24. UK Consumer Law has a good level of protection for the consumer. Although there are no specified time limits, so it depends on what would be 'expected' and 'reasonable'. So a TV/Monitor that stops working, through no fault of the user, during normal 'expected' usage, would be expected to last for at least 5 years. So if you have a '1 year warranty' and your TV/Monitor is 3 years old, under your statutory rights (it's on every till receipt), you would expect the company to either fix it or provide you with credit for 2/5 of the cost of the product (i.e. 5 years expected usage minus the 3 years you have used it equals 2 years of 'expected' usage left).
So a £500 TV that breaks after 3 years = either the retailer (not the manufacturer) fixes/replaces it or they send you £200 (although you can accept store credit, you can, legally, request a cash refund).
Of course it's a lot easier with a warranty and you may have a battle with the retailer on your hands, but ultimately, the law is on your side.

  25. look at the dc in connector, the power supply it’s IN the brick at the other end of that cable…

  26. Wait. I JUST BOUGHT MINE

  27. My Legion Y740 failed me 2 weeks out of warranty

  28. Guys, the problem is with the micro switches on the OSD control panel board! Just pop the top of the micro switches, and you will see migration between the internal contacts.

  29. im so happy the intro is back

  30. The ACCC in Australia would have forced Asus to fix this. 1 week and they refuse? come on. even dells better then that

  31. Some companies will repair or replace in warranty if you miss it by a week

  32. lol the funny part is if you got 3 months extra warranty it would have died 3 months later . that is the fun of programmable microchips . they die on command. how else is profit made . by selling stuff that never breaks ? you can onlly sell such stuff once .

  33. Well thanks for somewhat explaining why my Wii-U doesn't display 720p / 1080p correctly anymore …. Damn lightning strike to the house.

  34. those kind of problems remind me of what i had to deal with my AW3423DW… as far as i was aware, the panel was jank AF, nonstop flickering, but power was no issue, thankfully it was very early on in my warrunty period and got the whole thing replaced pretty quick.

  35. when warranty's time = date 😂😂😂 perfect timing from ASUS.
