Back in the mid 2000s it was common to cool a computer using a heater core from the scrapyard, but as those have become harder to find and water cooling components became easier to find this fell out of fashion. Could the old ways have been right though? Is it still cheaper to use a heater core to cool your CPU?

  1. Another adorable watercooling video. Love this. As I love…. This seg… Ah no, I mean…My new LTT water bottle, just arrived in Italy yesterday.

"Redneck Engineering" should be a whole series

  2. Still using the heater core from a 1974 MK2 Capri in my loop, keeps my , keeps my r5-2600x frosty

  3. It feels like Kyle is the adult in the room all the time. 😂

  4. Linus, all I want is for Alex to say: "Where are my detonators?!"

  5. 💻➡🍚
    if you know you know

  6. I just missed 4 videos because the stupid livestream nobody watches overrides the blue dot, that tells me about a new video. Great job!

  7. 1:11 That catch? From Mr Drop Tips? Must be CGI.

  8. Kyle is definitely the parent here. The long suffering parent.

  9. Too bad he didn't get the $200+ triple 140mm from Corsair

  10. Redneck is an offensive term.

  11. Electricity bill left the chat.🙂

  12. so basically:
Don't buy an AIO, instead by a Radiator waterblock pump fans and tube and make your own loop instead

  13. Oh, those nice times… I did such a thing myself that time!
    – If you go to a junkyard for a heater core, ask the owner/seller, and they give you a proper size one. (I could buy a brass one that was exactly 120x360mm, with 1/2" pipes)
    – Please use proper hose clamps! They are cheap, made of metal this will not expand even if they heat up
    – The aquarium pump was definitely the weakes link in this setup the impeller inside broke like every year and it did not have any RPM feedback
    – I had to go to a machine shop and let them make my CPU block. And yes, it was brazed.
    – I also made a custom reservoir from brass anf 4mm plastic tube.
    – That time 120mm, 3 pin fan was non existent
    – I made a cute wooden box for the radiator, that was sitting on top of the case
    – It was a reliable system. Even when the pump impellers broke, it did not completely stop cooling. Just some higher temps were the symptom. Once it ran without the pump for a week. (inspite it was cooling a 3GHz Pentium 4, which has been really hot)
    – Today, we have all the needed stuff available from Aliexpress, so it is not really necessary to struggle this much with such a setup. I am sure, you can even get a full custom setup for about the price of that AIO, that you only have to assemble, and no craftmanship is needed at all.

  14. Just make motherboard-reviews

  15. Question since you used a submersible pump. Could you have used/made a larger reservoir that the pump could sit in (like one built to fit in the area you have the pump) drawing from that, while than the outlet from the radiator merely allows it to flow down into the reservoir that is sitting below it. By doing that you both deaden the sound of the pump, but also help to keep it cool an running better, with a larger reservoir that does not take up more space than needed.

  16. The aliexpress Hakenkreuz fans look funny

  17. The barrage of OCD triggers for Kyle 😂😂😂😂😂
    I feel your pain bro.

  18. Pretty amazing to see perform However Power efficiency for next video Performance with low electric cost LOL😎👍

  19. Yea show us the normal method Linus..

  20. The juxtaposition between janky and doing it correctly was hilarious xD xD

  21. Why do they always use cable ties. Use jubilee clips.

  22. The real question is .. why do you have that much Vaseline at work ?!

  23. I still think having water in a computer is a terrible idea and every LTT water cooling video just confirms it. 😀

  24. Please please please look into used components for the cheap loop from actual watercooling components!
The existence of leak testers makes used parts much easier to test, and there are absolute bargains from people who bought everything and decided not to bother building it.

I was one of the haters on the original video. I am very happy to finally watch what was actually supposed to happen.

  25. Ngl some of my favorite LTT videos involve a ridonkulously large fan.

Also, realistically the coolant going down the sink is going to your local wastewater treatment facility and they will notice any significant presence in there testing regimens, and will treat accordingly. Source, my buddy works at a bigass California WWTF, and I assume your regulations are as tight or tighter than ours.

  26. Feel like the radiator shoul had been put through ultrasound washing to get any left over goo out.. and or circulating some strong chemicals through it for a while..
Reminds me of the yonder years when I made similar setup (can't remember where I got the heater/radiator but about same size as that one) – worked fine for couple of weeks until the antifreeze solution running in it pushed whatever goo into the block and broke it. In comparison even the Zalman's passive radiating reservor worked better and cheaper. :p

  27. Get 👏 Kyle 👏 a 👏 ziptie 👏 gun!

  28. Kyle has got to be the best part of the video. I have no idea if Linus will see this when he reads the comments but can we get Kyle on the upcoming Reacts channel reacting to maybe old sketchy projects you guys have done?
