We bought a once $100,000 NetApp storage server setup for $1000, except, we never checked if any of it works. Today we find out if we got scammed, how it was intended to work, and how you at home can modify one of these to provide a ton of storage expansion for a NAS or home computer for CHEAP.

  1. I wonder how much force it would take to tip over that cabinet with 4×24 discs spinning at 15k rpm – it's like a giant super gyro

  2. 10:57, Cough hpe Cough

  3. Thanks Linus for ELi5'ing these things for the folks who doesn't know what we do on a daily basis.

  4. $500? That rack alone is worth more than that.

  5. Dontforget, they also have smaller platters because they are 15k rpm. Full size platters can easily deform under constant use at that speed.

  6. I put a ds4243 with 24x 10tb drives in my closet for my Unraid server. Works great. The daisy chain stuff is where it gets complicated

  7. The issue you had with TrueNAS core is the reason why BSD isn't ready for anything

  8. 10:49 looking at you nvidia with your crappy divers software

  9. My work uses netapp and we always need more drives omg

  10. Hehe that Jake's cosplay on Torvalds vs Nvidia but about netapp
Also about random connectors for random purpose: i have actually seen and used the rack-mounted Synology NASes which use some kind of old Mellanox connectors for SAS connection to JBOD shelves and (as far as I can remember) some Philips 5.1 audio system with DB-15(like on VGA monitor) connector for the corded remote

  11. Sometimes you run across that guy that you just click with and are brilliant at troubleshooting your IT problems. And when you do – its magical

  12. Facebook Marketplace is a haven for scammers and criminals.

  13. lol not 10 grand a year in europe, rather 30 grand a year

  14. Saves money on buying servers, and he's also saving money with that Colton guy, who's apparently still working without getting paid in the background… very nice!

Just hire Wendell and give him sovereignty of his own channel

  15. Supermicro has been selling 44 x 3.5" disks JBOD since 2010 with no proprietary nonsense.

  16. you scammed yourself by posing with masonic symbols

  17. Hope you put this on a tax reduction list? )))

  18. Key to the SAN is the fiber channel fabric. Without that it is just a NAS.

  19. The longer you talk about stuff the most i understand the terms i see in AWS. i.e. 'High Availability'

  20. 17:20 Ying Yang Twins – Whistle While You Twurk hahahahahaha love you Linus!

  21. 10:59 Every fucking Enterprise grade Server, Networking Tech Company is doin this shit… Cisco, Dell, HP, etc. etc.
struggled many times because of this (If I need something, i mostly buy it used)
    #OpenSource4theWin

  22. Bro I got jump scared by that copying files popup on 25:44 like bruh

  23. They should have a process to transfer the license from the old user.

  24. My take away from this is that i hate my £0.30 per kWh electricity price 😢

lol, some months and again some weeks ago you could get a 20tb hdd for around 300 Euros. Just buy two and you have 40tb (well, actually probably just 35) and you won't have to pay that much energy and won't need so much room and get baked by the heat and noise. 😀

  25. @LinusTechTips, you could make a side-gig for your corp just teaching people what to look for and how to up-cycle surplus hardware.

Every time you want to pick up a new Enterprise-Level <whatever>, take folks thru the process end-to-end.

@24:16, $700 shipping?? Even with a U.S. conversion (depending on mileage), you could drive down and get it from US. At least you could write off a vacay, LOL!
