Things sure have come a long way since the first mobile phone was invented, and there have been plenty of duds or experiments along the trail to where we are today. So of course, we had to buy them and take a look for ourselves.

  1. Although I don't remember ever seeing the "Lipstick Phone," I do remember that in those days the smaller the phone was, the cooler it was. It is totally believable that some high school kid would have sacrificed the practicality and convenience of a keypad for a phone that was smaller (and novel) to avoid being seen carrying around a "brick" phone.

  2. Totally agree with you !!! Boring as hell,… Exactly what I was talking with a friend the other day ! I remember my Nokia 6820 ❤❤❤

  3. The amount of time I spent on GSM arena every year pre 2010 amazes me

  4. Even though I'm gen z, I guessed much closer to the release years than Linus did 😛

  5. when i was a kid, i begged my parents to buy me the xperia play phone… 10 years later, i STILL want that phone

  6. @18:28 the worst sponsor segue so far, no segue…

  7. Seamless segway 😙🤌

  8. The N93i was turned into a Transformer in the first Transformers live action movie, so Linus isn't that far off! 😄

  9. You know what's even weirder? You singing "Fly me to the moon" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMWnAMScFws

  10. The fact that he called the Nokia phone "like a transformers" but that phone was actually used in the 2007 film and it did become a transformer lol

  11. Bro the Xperia play is so cool. You could play Minecraft on it with a real controller

  12. insert obvious comment about mr mobile videos and old smartphones here

  13. Linus if you read this, could you do a vid on Ali xpress old server hardware like u did on those weird gpus, really good value prop, the one combo I saw was like 167(pounds) for 2x e5-2590v4s(14 cores each) 64gb ecc ddr4 ram and a dual socket motherboard. Would be cool to see if this would be the best way to do cheap gaming(even found a combo for 1x 10 core v4 CPU with 16gb ram for 75usd)

  14. You should have invited Dankpods for this, I would like to see colab between LTT and him.

  15. Am I the only one hearing the clubbed to death beat as the 8110 is shown?

  16. 5:12 Ayooo

  17. I had (and still have it) an n93! Bought it used in 07 with the camera switch broken, camera only activated when swiveling the display, no menu option 😅
Used it as my first combined phone and mp3 player and loved it!

I want to shout to the not mentioned HP IPAQ 614c! Best t9 typing experience ever with it's touch circle acting as scroll 😀 touch screen only liked stylus or nail tapping though..

  18. Fuck yea, man ! Nokia has the best phone designs. They were not boring at it.

  19. All phones are designed around and based on the modem module does the GSM/GPRS/SIM . Most the personality is dictated by it

  20. I cannot believe you didnt show the camcorder phone recording anything and what the video quality looked like

  21. Makes me sort of want to go out and buy all the phones I ever owned plus the ones I wanted, but couldn't afford back in the day

  22. Yo so can we talk about them putting the dude who was dancing in the Siemens ad in blackface???

  23. You guys should have collaborated with mr.moblie for this one

  24. 9:57 so according to some shady inflation calculator, 200£ in 1996 worth like 380£ today which is about 485$ and Linus said 500 bucks so the conclusion is that he is very good at guessing prices

  25. that last one definitely belongs in the 90s

  26. this remind me Nokia golden age, almost all with a phone is nokia in south east asia (the rest is sony ericsson )

I ,no joke, owned like half of these. The 7600 was literally my first "smartphone".

  27. the early sony experias "smart"phones were also crazy special 😀 but not in a good way

  28. 30 seconds in there better be a Nokia N-Gage in this

  29. Next try the HTC TyTn2
GPS, speech rec, Office integration, HSPDA, games, even streaming video from BBC iPlayer and others. All contemporary with the "copy/paste? Who'd need that?", data-less original iPhone.

  30. P800 Sony was the shit

  31. I have one plus 7 pro T, the camera is broken..

  32. I think you missed the Ericsson R380s which, in 1999, was able to recognize hand writing and was a great phone.

  33. The funky Nokia shapes absolutely did sell massively. Most people had standard brick phones but there were bragging rights with having one of the weird or high end ones. Phones didn't do much and designs were so varied that a weird keypad wasn't really a problem

  34. Xperia PLAY is one of the coolest phone I've ever owned

  35. can you guys please give like 10 frames or so before starting the dialogue, on some devices the loading skips the first few frames so you have to rewind to get the first word or so

  36. This reminds me of how old I am and how much cooler phones were back then. Today they are all in the same form with prices to buy a car! I can't wait for a law to be written that ensures the maintenance of devices even if they are no longer in production! Because if we look logically at the sales situation of the product, the demand for a very popular product will always be very high. And when all customers have the product, it is no longer necessary to make new ones! And that's why they start selling new ones, but they don't take responsibility for maintenance, and at the same time they hold patents for the production of spare parts, which makes their production impossible. If they do not intend to maintain their products, their license should also expire. The same should also apply to the music, film and software industries! How many of us have music, movies or programs on old media such as cassettes, CDs, DVDs and they are now unusable, but their content, despite the deterioration, is still under a license that the user cannot enforce to obtain the same content on a new medium, and at the same time as the owner of the copy, he should ensure that there is no illegal distribution of the content to people who did not buy it! We are not their employees so they can punish us when they don't care about us users!!!

  37. I would love to see Linus check out the Samsung Upstage. It was a weird, dual-sided phone/mp3 player that would probably blow his mind.

  38. my first phone was a startac

  39. A drinking game where the first person to pick out the sponser spot does't have to drink.

  40. People say that older phone’s build quality was better, but I can’t get my head around the fact they literally exploded into a million pieces the moment they hit the ground.

  41. 1950 2000 2015 2020 2023

  42. nokia had way more interesting phone tham that,

  43. Sick nugget dip, Linus! Now test them with the hurr durr six hunge-os by Senny, and look for pictures in them!

  44. I almost had the motorola flipout as my first smartphone, but then I went with the Samsung Galaxy 5 (not S5, the S line didn't exist yet). It had a bigger screen and android 2.0 and got updates until android 2.2.

  45. I really liked the touch pro phones.

  46. Where Nokia N-Gage ?

  47. Honestly I thought it was just an American thing but you guys can't say Nokia properly either
