  1. Removing foil is obviously very hard for LTT! Nice video though ๐Ÿ˜‚

  2. So are you're business ethics.

  3. So are your ethics!

  4. Parity drives on UnRAID do not just contain identical data. Each parity drive is a different set of parity data, otherwise the system could not emulate two drives. You can check this for yourself by directly examining the content of the parity drives using tools like dd

6:35 He keeps recommending Unraid, but has never checked if it actually restores a degraded array? Top notch ๐Ÿ˜•

  5. Boy Cot LTT

  6. Apparently this video was shoot on the same day as that of last POOL COOLING video….!!!

  7. very sketchy as allway and it still work 1000%

  8. Fun fact, server maintenance is annoying af.

  9. You cant flash a clear screwdriver and not expect me not to want it now!

  10. Haha funny. Good job.

  11. Could have sworn Linus went to Truenas Scale for his aging drives…

  12. Only two drives for parity, in a massive storage-server with 8Tb mechanical drives. That's absolutely crazy. Always run a minimum of two identical setups, on two different physical locations….you know i'm right ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. guys wtf are you doing there -> #ENT L3 tech….

  14. I made similar 3d printer enclosure just from wood.

  15. When is the next episode coming?

  16. Did Jake imply he was being cucked? Lol

  17. This man is such a truenas shill, i jumped ship to unraid for home use a while ago and it for the most part is so much easier

  18. best segue to their sponsor today!!

  19. As a blue Fox, I approve of this video !

  20. When I read the title I said
    Sounds about right ๐Ÿ˜‚

  21. I did this a few months ago with a larger replacement drive (so had to replace the parity drive first), but only had one parity drive. That was a pain… And I still only have one parity drive

"You can replace disks for cheaper if instead of buying one 8TB drive you buy two 22TB drives! The investment will pay off eventually, somewhere in next 20 years, I swear!"

    – LTT

  22. Why not use TrueNAS with ZFS where you can easily replace with bigger drives, and when you change all to the same, you can use all the space.

  23. Boots off of a USB stick, is a faff to add new bigger drives… no thanks Unraid, I'll stick with lvm and mdadm in Linux which CAN absolutely be just as flexible. (This is actually what Synology do under the hood with their "Synology Hybrid RAID/SHR" stuff.)

    Example:

    2x 22TB drives
    3x8TB drives

    1. Create 8TB partitions on all 5 drives and RAID5 (or RAID6) them.
    2. Create partitions for the remainder on the 2 22TB drives and RAID1/mirror those.
    3. Create PVs with both RAIDs in LVM and add them to a VG and LV … Boom. 46TB of usable space fir a max of 1 drive security.

If you ever swap one of the 8TB drives to a 22TB one: create the 8TB partition and add that to the existing RAID5 to be rebuilt, then create the partition for the remainder and add that to the RAID1 while "grow"ing it to a RAID5. Resize the LV in LVM and you'll have the extra 14TB available for your filesystem… (If you ever want to go to even bigger drives, just add another RAID with the extra "layer" of partitions above 22TB…)

If you need 2 drives of security, plan the RAID layers accordingly…

  24. Yep, not going to convince me that UNRAID..aka RAID 4 is a good idea.
    It's stupid.
