"Don't quote me on that"
~Linus 2023
1:11:51: I would read that EULA section as protective of the copyrights *of the editor*, not the mods made with it. Am I off here?
The biggest danger to the modding community I see is people smelling money in it and flooding it with quickly made garbage mods to try to grab some easy money, like what happened to the mobile ecosystem
On the German car ting they let you drive the car you want. The only thing you can’t go in every city except if you pay for the pollution. So in short: if your car is safe to drive you can drive it
Support for the game actors and writers
I think game developers don't really "deserve" income from mods except theoretically in cases where the mod is so crazy that it may compete with the developers own future games. So I wouldn't like it but I would understand it if Bethesda wanted to make some money from people recreating Morrowind/Oblivion in Skyrim. Obviously if a mod developer chooses to use a profit sharing thing that's ok as long as the game dev doesn't force everyone into it.
3:02:09 I'd implore you to find an engineering position today that is not focused on finding off-the-shelf solutions for things to avoid doing actual engineering, the boutique shop has a point… As an actual engineer, I find myself doing very little actual "engineering" in my engineering position. I think the key point you'd want to make would be that engineers are "capable" of doing actual engineering, whereas the boutique engineers likely aren't
Per the conversation about being surprised so many people watch live vods..I'm one of those. I only watch long format content from LTT. It's currently Monday night, and I'm listening to the WAN Show while at work. I consume a TON of long form content while at work or while cooking, etc instead of listening to music or something. I don't watch any regular videos on LTT. If I'm in a scenario where I could actually focus on watching it instead of only listening, I'm likely to be doing something other than staring at YouTube.
I couldn't stop thinking through the whole mod section about Skyrim, where Bethesda created an official modding tool for PS4, XO and PC and then they launched an Anniversary Edition of Skyrim with a bundle of community mods for an extra. How that works? Did Bethesda give the modders a cut? I bet you they didn't…
Idk why we are talking about alot of merchandise… talk about interesting stuff idc about all this lmg business stuff.
A quick couple of Visual mods to increase game quality over all and FPS take my money. vs a $800 dollar GPU upgrade Pfffttt..
2:13:00 That's not entirely true. In Germany your car has to pass TÜV (a technical inspection for road worthiness) usally every two years. If it fail you have to repair the car and show up within 4 weeks at TÜV again so that they can check if you have really repaired it and stick the approval seal on your plate. Without TÜV a car can not be driven legally on the road (their are execptions for workshops with a special red plate and cars with foreign plates that not require some technical inspection) and usally will be scrapped if the repairs would cost more than the car is worth. Obviously there are car enthusiasts that will buy rare or particular cars and pay the repair or do it themselves regardless to keep it on the road. And yes you have to pay no tax for cars older than 30 years if you get a 'H' (for historical) plate but the car has to be original or modded back in the day or as they did used to do it. So Restomods will usally not get this special plate. But you have to maintain it to pass TÜV if you want to drive it anyways.
I 100% agree with Luke. My brother and I bought a WiiU specifically to play Wind Waker again, but ended up playing the most of party games with family and friends. Love the WiiU and miss those experiences with current consoles.
wan show is my go to background noise
Just wanted to say…
Thanks for saying Porsche and not "Porsh". Thank you
58:05 Luke genuinely looks humbled that people would wear his likeness on themselves..kinda sweet ☺️
I think that modders might team up and create companies and you subscribe to the company and then they let you download anything from they're library.
I saw the video title and go “no” shaking my head
A comment about planned obsolescence in OG filament lightbulbs: Yessssss, and actually no. I believe Technology Connections did a video on it. That "longest burning bulb in the world" is actually just burning really really dimly. A filament bulb's lifespan is dictated mainly by the power you run through it, the material of the filament, and the integrity of the glass. As you push more power the bulb gets hotter and burns brighter which decreases it's lifespan. As you reduce power the bulb gets cooler and burns dimmer which increases lifespan. They're already using tungsten which is the material that has the highest known melting point and filling the glass with noble gasses to prevent oxidation.
TLDR: As you push more power through filament bulbs they glow more brightly but burn out more quickly so manufacturers had to strike a balance between luminescence and bulb life.
They briefly talked about gas prices. I did the conversion to prices in BC to USD gallons. They're at about $5.29 a gallon. That's roughly equivalent to current gas prices in southern California. Just to give everyone a little direct comparison.
Linus, PLEASE play Halo: CE Anniversary if you get that 3D projector sorted out. I never got the chance to experience that and would love to hear your thoughts on it!
Never gets old
Linus: So! (Whatever technologically distopyan news in an upbeat tone)
Luke: (Sigh, groans) Yeah…
Roblox is under fire for child labor exploitation for how they are handling paid mods. At first I rolled my eyes but after reading about it more, I have to say the allegations hold water.
WRT WGA strike: The play with both TV/Film and Video Games isn't necessarily to force "The Industry" as an entire industry to the bargaining table. There's not really a strong, centralized body equivalent to the WGA on the other side. TV and Film have AMPTP, but they're generally less centralized than the WGA (industry competitors and weaker punishments for acting out etc.) and I'm not aware of such an association for game developers/publishers.
The goal is to essentially pit studios/developers/publishers against each other. The WGA has explicitly called studios to break rank and negotiate directly with the union instead of through the AMPTP, giving them a way to not only resume their own production, but also screw over their competitors. As soon as one studio opens negotiations, the floodgates open as no studio can afford to let another resume production before itself.
I'd be willing to be that this will be the strategy taken with game developers as well, especially assuming they're less organized than the AMPTP. Even without any of that, foreign game studios will likely be minimally affected by the strike. With video games being much more international than tv/film, the competition from and lost revenue to foreign developers puts a lot of pressure on game studios with even a small delay. Even in TV/Film, Korean and indie shows and films are having a moment right now with the strikes halting production, just imagine how much more that will be true of video games.
I know I'll put on your vods as background video when I'm doing mundane stuff on my other monitor
The Creator of the games should be paying the modders because they should not give them an excuse to not put a feature in the game because the mod community will take care of it. That is free labor on their part.
I feel like by-donation is the ideal solution for mods. If something is great and I like using it I'll go back and donate to that author.
If a 3rd party modder was able to add DLSS, including DLSS3, to Starfield within a week, no game developer with a team larger than one person has any excuse to NOT include DLSS in any game from here on out.
" I can't ad lib as well as I used to." Yes, luv, we know…
10000000000% opposed to paid mods.
As many have said, this sets a nasty precedent and opens the door to INSANELY screwed up business practices.
It will create business ventures around modding existing games, and would at that point would no longer be what can be considered modding, but third-party micro-DLCs.
This then causes core games to (further) spiral downwards in quality, with these micro-DLCs becoming close to required in terms of improving basic functionality that should be expected from developers, and eventually leading to these beloved series' that have supported modding in the past to become locked down, because they would ABSOLUTELY want to get a bigger piece of the pie these "modding" companies get, subsequently licensing engine access out to these "developers", and prohibiting any passionate gamer to make their own going forward.
I mean heck, at that point, why would publishers have devs do all the work when they can have people that pay THEM to do it instead?
This should NOT go unopposed, or this is how you'll get paid achievements.
And eventually, ideas as ludicrous as having to pay to unlock the resolution you'd like to play at wouldn't be far off from reality.
Seriously pessimistic and cynical? Maybe, but have any of you been surprised at the depths these executives have been willing to shamelessly plumb up to this point?
