Putting your PC in another room makes so much sense. Why suffer through the noise and heat your gaming rig puts off when you could just…not? But getting peripherals to work from an entirely different part of the house is prohibitively expensive. Or is it? We take a look at some of the much more budget-friendly options available to getting USB working in a completely different room.

Should have done a short shoutout for software based solutions.
Virtualhere is what the steam link uses, and the latency is just a few ms extra + your network latency is.
i would love this but for hdmi
Back in army I needed to get 3g USB-modem from my cabin to outside deck, because mobile signals didn't exactly penetrate all the steel around my cabin in a warship.
So I just soldered fuck long USB 2.0 cable and it worked well enough to play wow.
Power for hub on far side or close side?
What was the point here? You can do IO and control the OS sure, but if another person is telling what happens? Don't you need display information as well?
And what about video ? Display port has limit too 🙂 . And maybe audio too ?
doesnt answer the question if he could've had a cheaper solution than his kvm extender at home
where was this vid a year ago lmao
Wait, there's 8 cables in Ethernet cable and USB only uses 4 so that means that you could use 2 USB devices with 1 ethernet cable instead of one as you made it
where is the affordable native 4k display port extenders? some. latency test would be good for us gamers I can't see it being a thing but data would be nice
I have one network connection on my Livingroom wall so this would be a non starter for me
WRT doing it yourself, "It's just copper" over-simplifies a little bit. The better variants of these "RJ45 to X" adaptors have some impedance matching components, even if just passive ones. A DIY solution mashing some given signal over TP cabling might work within some restricted speed/distance envelope, but may give flaky/unpredictable results as you ask more of it.
Now I really want to see Cat8 cables grow on the Christmas Tree! 😁😉😇
is there a solution that has either single or dual HDMI and usb2? thatd be rad.
Note: only usb2…. the expensive ones earlier were usb3
The usage is pretty limited without a video connection though.
So… If copper is copper… Could I increase(well, decrease) the size (AWG) of my cable to reduce the overall resistance in the wires?
Because I'm assuming the reason why it doesn't work over a certain distance, is because of the higher resistance (resistance of a wire is something like (the material x the length) / the surface (area) of the wire. )
Meaning, if I take 8 x AWG 12 wires, of, say 100m, terminate them on both side on some terminal blocks and then connect a standard ethernet wire to the blocks to connect into the hubs using the cheap method… would it work?
It would be : USB hub <– usb to ethernet dongle <– Ethernet connector on one side and bare wires on the other side connected to terminal blocks <– Terminal blocks <–> Long low gauge wires <–> Terminak blocks –> Ethernet connector on one side and bare wires on the other side connected to terminal blocks –> usb to ethernet dongle –> PC.
Or you can just leave your PC where it is.
Im using a 15 meter 4 port usb 2 Hub (plenty fast for some mouse, keyboard and Bluetooth dongles) and a 15 meter Fiber HDMI 2.1 cable that does 4K 120 without issues.
The hdmi was arroun 35€ and the usb hub was 15€ and it has been a rocksolid solution to game on m living room TV while my PC sits in the bedroom / office
I'm trying to find a USB3 over network extender but I can't find it. Why not?
Can’t believe you didn’t setup Remote Desktop & install the client on your phone so you could see what was going on w/o having an employee in the room relaying the screen back.
I would love to see a detailed video on how to move your PC to another room and have your workstation just be a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers. I imagine it would need thunderbolt and a few other things. I have looked into this but have never found a definitive guide on how exactly to do this.
could you create a virtual tunnel connection so that the usb signal could use existing networking infrastructure?
But what about display??
hey where's the explanation of the top task bar nonsense?
Put your PC on your desk, throw away you GPU. Problem solved.
Now I feel stupid for using a $30 25ft hdmi cable and $20 25ft. usb cable to get my TV and usb hub into another room…
Glad all the Redditors with their short term memory already forgot about all the drama. They have no lives so they make theirs on the internet. Keep pumping out content and getting views Linus. I've supported you the whole way through.
I want to see the latency!
Me thinking of my steam link the entire video
