FYI — SteamOS 3.5 automatically mounts external drives and can format drives in Settings->Storage, so the issue with setting up the dock's drive mentioned at 15:48 should be resolved once Valve fully releases 3.5 (or if you install the OS preview)

8:43 you did not apply thermal paste on the DIE correctly – it is not fully covered, that's why it is better spread thermalpaste and not dotting like you do. And they you wonder – why your CPU temperature goes higher. Once again bad effort from the team.

I'm confused, didn't better hall effect sticks release around 7 months ago? Why still use gulikit ones, or it wasn't made specifically for steam deck and you would have to configure it? I might be wrong, but if I am please tell me

just the right amount of cringe
The higher res screen doesn't seem like a good idea to me with all the messing around and I bought a JSAUX dock for my steam deck and its the worst thing I got its almost useless. I got it to use my deck plugged into a TV while in hospital with a wireless keyboard and mouse and some external storage and my headset but as soon as you plug in anything (like a USB Stick) with the wireless mouse dongle the range on the dongle drops to a few cm (I have test on other computers and this doesn't happen). It turns out they didn't put any shielding on the USB ports also once you have 2 USB items plugged in it starts to interfere with the HDMI with it dropping in and out. I did message them about this and was told its the way it is designed to work and were not very helpful at in the end all they would do was give me £8 back on a £40 dock that is almost completely useless I still need to find a new dock but with not being able to work now due to medical problems I am warry on buying any dock as I cant afford to waste money.
I would personally change the title and thumbnail for this video. From the perspective of someone who often scrolled past this video before actually watching it, saying "I spent more than I saved" and showing a broken screen feels like negative advertising for the refurbished deck (something I'm actually considering buying). Great vid, btw!

I was considering the screen update just because it had better colors. I found the colors on the original screen very bland, but after using SteamOS 3.5 color controls I was able to tweak it so that it looks a lot better.
It’s the small things like “we better send this to labs” that makes me sleep better at night knowing that ur trying! 😂😂😂I remember the days when y’all would review a keyboard and then proceed to review it blah blah “it’s a keyboard”. Blah blah linear switches blah blah “it types good” blah blah “yea it’s a keyboard” stg that’s the general gist. I would get so triggered when anybody reviews a product and proceeds to say “yea it’s a product”. Just some constructive criticism. No hate. ❤
I know the "Steam Deck 2" isn't really on the roadmap yet, but I can seriously see myself replacing my entire desktop with one.
I'm still rocking a 4th gen i7 and AMD r9 390 desktop and I plan to run it into the ground. I think by the time the next Steam Deck refresh comes out, it would be a pretty valid upgrade.

I have an ExtremeRate white shell and original screws were no deal at all. They worked exactly as on original shell. The shell is “extreme”Ly premium in my opinion. The screen is not worth it though. Say goodbye to Steam Deck overclocking cause their BIOS probably won’t support it.

The external dock and drive are perfect for your Windows install on the Steam Deck by the way. 2nd workstation! On the go, gaming goodness with SteamOS, sitting down, extra PC for a 2nd vpn connection to a customer or something.

Most upgrades are unnecessary, I just use mine as is with an SD card & a dock. It's so perfect I even sold my Switch, PS5 & Gaming Laptop!

The DeckHD is damn stupid. Having a lower resolution display is brilliant on the Deck, it allows you to get much higher frame rates and the lower res isn't even noticeable on such a small screen. What would actually be awesome would be an OLED screen replacement.

the thermal cooler is overpriced for what it is but better cooling is a great thing
the deck hd screen is nice buttttttttttttttttttttt id rather have better color gamut and higher refresh rate for older games like quake 3 which will get over 100 fps or even quake 2 remastered both will have higher refresh rates . mine with its overclocked screen at 70 hz stays locked at that refresh rate
You missed one component, that I love: USB-C to USB-C EXTENSION CABLE (2m is mine)
So you can play while charging, using USB connected to the dock, HDD, or SDD, or use your TV or monitor and the Steam deck as controller.
Then there is a kid name thermal putty which is superior to pads and transfers heat better.
Got the 64gb refurb model, upgraded the SSD to 1tb, changed the back plate to a JSAUX and got GuliKit Hall Effect Joysticks. Couldn't be more satisfied tbh.
And it looked brand new, there were ZERO signs of any wear on the unit, display was flawless etc.
At this point is it still the steamdeck of theseus ?
The guy that helped with the refit looks like Al McWhiggin from Toy Story 2 and you can't tell me otherwise

DeckHD should’ve had thinner bezels. The bezels of the SteamDeck is ugly
