We know you probably WANT a new computer, but do you really NEED one? Odds are good that, for most people, a brand new rig is simply not necessary. To prove it, we swapped our writers’ sick gaming rigs full of modern hardware like the latest CPUs and raytracing graphics cards, for something a tad more…quaint. Specifically, 6th gen machines from Dell and HP. Will they be able to protect their jobs and meet their deadlines, or will the lag of old hardware stop them in their tracks?

  1. i daily drive a similiar pc since 5 years. still fast enough for anything i do at work

  2. If you're only doing office stuffs, Windows 2000 was still waaay responsive than the current windows 11. Looking at cpubenchmark, I can't find any AMD K7 cpus and the lowest was Pentium 4 1300Mhz which has 77 points and the kinda current processor Ryzen 7 5700G has 24618 points, which is 320 times faster. Windows 2000 era cpus should be slower than P4 1300Mhz, but doing office jobs, like word, excel, you dont need any current ones.

  3. Whats funny is at work, im trying to avoid getting my laptop upgraded even though it looks like its been in battlefield and TB3 isnt working because im on window 10 and have automatic admin access.

  4. As someone still running AMD am3+ I game perfectly fine on an fx 8370 black edtion 32gb of ram and an amd rx580 , runs good enough that makes it hard to validate upgrading to newer hardware, where as going from the fx6300 to the 8370 black edtion was only $60, I do hope @LinusTechTips do a revisit on these older fx series

  5. I've always favored Dells for daily use and hopped up gamers. They have always been reliable. Also, there are adapters for any video output port to any monitor. I use those regularly. Remember, we did just fine with older systems in the past, but now everything has to be bigger and better. $k, 8k… blah blah blah 🙄 Human eye can't perceive anything near 4K or above anyhow.

  6. Why would i get an LTT screwdriver instead of a IFIXIT Pro toolkit..

  7. "Would require a monitor upgrade" … No it requires a $8 adapter.

  8. I have a rtx 4070, 5120x1440p 240hz 1440p monitor, rest of computer is over 3 years old and I'm to the point where I don't even think replacing an electronic would make me happy at all.

  9. This is just Linus trying to justify giving some of his staff crappy PCs, isn’t it?

  10. Yeah I def need new CPU and GPU

  11. I have a Dell Optiplex 7010/9010 Custom; it has an Intel I5-3470 3.2GHZ-3.6GHZ Clean Quad-Core Processor, 32GB DDR3-1600 RAM, and 1TB SSD Drive. It currently runs Windows 11 Pro, and it runs like a Marvel.

  12. This of course has been a thing for a long time. These are Ferraris without the engines installed, add gpu here.

  13. I feel like most of the weird bugs people encountered were because they moved the drives from their current systems into the older ones. Windows doesn't exactly like having conflicting drivers installed. And I know that windows has the sysprep /generalize tool but in my experience from creating windows images, your image source machine should match the target hardware as close as possible. That's why in order to minimize the number of images they have to maintain, many companies only offer 3-4 system choices overall.

  14. 😂😂i still use . I7 1st gen with rtx 3060ti for editing. I buffer 🤔but but but I can manage 😂

  15. I have an old Dell with an i7-3770K, GTX 1050 Ti and 16GB RAM and it’s absolutely fantastic for an under TV box.

  16. this video is an example why we need back minus, thumbs down, fckoff, or what was before on YouTube , just garbage is what is garbage it is…..

  17. I've been using an ROG G551jm

    i7 4710HQ
    GTX 860m
    16GB ram

for 8 Years and I've played AAA games on this watched movies and Developed software and I don't feel the need to upgrade, It's a snappy laptop with ssd

  18. Linus: buys a mansion
Also Linus: makes his employees use potatoes as workstations

  19. Nice you also listen to MacroBlank

  20. Plouffe looked traumatised

  21. I feel like the Machines they got from this company they sourced it from where just Bad machines, because i myself have a OptiPlex 7040 with a 6600k and 16 gigs of ram with a intel ARC A380LP and i never had any issues with the system at all. All the random Glitches they said they experienced Never happened to me, my system was Extremely fast and snappy. so i really don't understand why their systems just seemed to give them non stop Technical issues. The fact you can get these system for like 200 dollars is actually Bonkers. Considering's the fact that the systems these OptiPlex's are competing with are probably over 2000 Each. Im gona be upgrading mine to a i7 6700 here shortly and adding another 16 gigs of ram for Quad channel.

  22. 00:35 damn, just realised my 6700k might be considered obsolete these days 😭

  23. My main PC runs with an z370, 16GB DDR4 Dual Channel and an i7 8700. I got them for free, because the Boss of a friend threw it in the trash, because he got a newer 12700K.

Was a nice upgrade, about same performance as a Ryzen 3600 with my RX 6600. A Samsung 970 Evo plus runs at full speed no problem.

I game on it mostly and use it for everyday work. Resolution is 2560×1080. I would like to upgrade, but at the Moment there really isn't a .. need. It would just give me more Numbers, but not a better experience. Hobby wants, budget and brain says "no lol".

  24. So apparently booting taking several minutes on a old system even with a SSD is kinda normal.
I used to thought something was wrong with the 4th gen system that I still daily drive, since it took quite longer to boot compared to my laptop which is even older and on spinning rust(granted that is running Windows 7 which don't need much performance to be smooth), looks like newer versions of Windows just need a lot of performance to boot fast but not required to just be smooth in normal operations, interesting.

  25. Watching this on my 15" 2014 16gb Macbook Pro

  26. Beardless Linus haunts me now…

  27. My son has a PC with 32gb of DDR3, a 1050Ti and an i5-4690 and he has no problems with anything he does online.

  28. my i7 7700k Win10 VR rig is faster in windows than my Win11 i9 13900hx laptop o_0

  29. Why didn't they just put a bit more of memory? That's super cheap.

  30. Microsoft from 2025 called, and wants the pcs on the landfill

  31. Yikes, the amount of issues people are having with 6th gen components is making me look very awkwardly at my i7-7700k, 32GB RAM and GTX 1070 rig… I've had no problems with this machine!

  32. Oh myy god. the BEARD OF LINUS. He SHAVED IT? Welcome back my nerdy old style Linus. but where is the intro. huhu

  33. I got Fujitsu workstation with m.2 ssd slot and i5-6600 for around 100€. It even came with sata ssd and gt630 graphics card. After upgrading it with m.2 ssd and rtx3060 I can comfortably play any new title in 2k with dlss on a medium settings. Boot time is around 4 seconds. Eventually I will replace this pc with something on AM5 socket(transferring m.2 ssd, graphics card and power supply). But so far I didn’t feel pressured to do so from productivity standpoint. So yeah, it’s great machines for work purposes to have a PC now and upgrade later when you will have more money

  34. I run a 3770k (4c8t) at 4.2Ghz with a 980ti and 16Gb of 1600 DDR3. This gets used for gaming, CAD, video editing, blender etc. The reason I'm still using it is because it works great. I upgraded the network card to gig for better transfers to the NAS but that's about it. I've had it OCd to 5Ghz but it gets a bit noisy. But really I have no reason to upgrade. I did swap the original 3650k to 3770k for the hyperthreading…. In fact the only reason I'm tempted to ugprade now is for the enhanced virtualisation options of more modern CPUs.

  35. srsly just watched it and realized how oldie i'm using my pc r8 now – i7 3930k and X79 Rampage IV extreme BF3 edition mobo with GTX 980Ti xtreme gaming windforce and 32gb vengenge pro sticks

  36. How have you improved my life? Useless content.

  37. Gosh. I used to be one of the people running a 3rd gen i7 with a gtx 660 ti and a pentium laptop until about 2-3 years ago. It was fine for my use! But then I started playing VR. Now I have… something newer.

10th gen i9, 64GB RAM, recently got an RTX 4060ti 16GB (heavily overclocked the memory to minimize the impact of the low bus speed) since VRAM is most important for VRChat (I can now load 1/4th of a furry avatar!)

  38. a yes why a writer needs a 4090 TI

  39. Am I back in 2018?

  40. Linus linus linus , got a bit of a juicy past dont you dog? Tsk tsk tsk

  41. https://www.youtube.com/@ExplainingComputers has been advocating this case for years now 🙂

  42. They should try a 386sx without a HD and green display.

  43. Ugh. Thanks LTT for putting this out there. You've really helped out IT Admins here. Hopefully no-one making decisions in organisations about whether they should refresh out of warranty computers watches this.

  44. My current gaming PC is a circa 2013 engineering workstation optiplex rescued from a pallet in the shed at work. It had mold growing on it.

$150 worth of GPU and PSU later it runs great

  45. After 4 generations, time to upgrade. Give de old computer to some one that needs one and cant aford.

  46. I'm literally watching this on a skytech global computer with a nvidia geforce gtx 1660 ti in a hp elitedesk 800g1 with 32gb of ram

  47. Hook me up with a pc then Linus, cause my main pc just died and im stuck with a shitbox froom 2005.

  48. Linux plus a little tweaking – still going strong on hardware that Windows says is too old. Lol. Running Cyberpunk and other "modern" titles just fine. In fact, many games in Steam run faster due to the lack of background bloat. $600 saved and no DRM and spying collecting data on me like Windows 11 wants to do.

  49. the headphone jack thing was hilarious. When you've had top notch pc to work with. I only know that because back in the day when I owned a Dell Optiplex for writing.
