Storage is a tricky thing. While Hard Drives are great for archiving Terabytes of Linux ISOs, they are VERY slow and their mechanical bits are vulnerable to magnets and wear and tear. SSD’s are fast, but also susceptible to bit rot. RAM is super fast, but can’t store anything once the power is off. But what if there was a tech that could solve (nearly) ALL of those problems? It’s called Ferro Electric RAM, it’s a form of Non-volatile RAM that has some incredible features. And a painfully high price.

Check out the Machdyne Blaustahl Storage Device:

  1. Thanks for watching!

THE USB DRIVE HAS BEEN LOCATED CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU FOR PLAYING

  2. Some times : "Linux is difficult and always forcing you into the command line to solve problems"

Other times : "This device has native support in unix based systems but if you are on windows you have to do a teardown to flash firmware"
(Procedes to do a teardown and flash firmware)

When things are harder in linux it's a problem but when it's harder in windows it's a fun project with simple step by step instructions. 😅
    Bias much?

Joking aside. Great and informative video. ☺

  3. Amazing! I imagine that this type of memory could be used as a buffer for frequent writes.

  4. A page of A4 paper can comfortably fit around 2000, maybe even 3000 characters of text. And I would suggest that that may actually be a good competitor for long term storage of such small amounts of data. After all, even high quality paper will cost you far less than 34$. As long as you keep it away from physical rot, there is no data rot to be worried about and paper can easily get much older than 150 years.

  5. 0:04 Actually, you can't wipe your data on hard disk drive like this. Even at spinning, the magent nearly impossible to causing a scratch. You need a much, much powerful electricity magenet like a magenet charger.

  6. For anyone wondering, this is mainly used for storing private keys for crypto wallets.

  7. This video was great, very Bill Nye energy

  8. Missed the opportunity to write the name tag as "Occifer" instead of officer.

  9. pi pico

  10. Bit keys 😮

  11. I still have a 170Mb hard disc drive from my first pc build from 1993 – it still works perfectly whenever I use it. I keep it for using old industrial pc isa backplane systems where I use dos and turbo-pascal since I have a few great opto-isolated isa interface boards from that era – it's like having the discrete i/o of a dozen raspberry pi boards on one system.

  12. Honestly, a video on "how long can your pc last while being dusty before you have to clean it" would be cool

  13. really effin tired of adam showing up, skipping another ltt video

  14. Yeah it’s probably USB 3.2 Gen 2x4x8x16x32x64x128x256x512

  15. These kinds of videos are my favorite

  16. That phone number calls the Rickroll hotline.

  17. I enjoyed this video. I have heard of this tech before but you explained it much more clearly.

  18. still bigger than the RAM on a VIC-20

  19. 100 usd for cargo pants …. What ??

  20. I can't wait for the people of the future to find one of these with a link to a rick roll.

  21. 10:14 just wait till delete me gets hacked and everything backfires 😂😂😂😂

  22. Mouser says I can get 16Mbit CY15V116QN-40BKXA Infineon FeRAM for 44.50$ each if I buy 480 of them. I could have ~8 gigs of FeRam for 20k.

  23. 0:41 magic trick still got me

  24. Just waiting for the first person to get Doom running on it 😅

  25. Man, for 32 bucks having a extremely safe way to store a text file almost seems worthwhile… Might have to get me some VERY pricey kilobytes

  26. men I trust mentioned

  27. What happened to hologram crystals? They were promising us data could be stored on those with new data just by changing the viewing angle.

  28. seems like linus and co. watched super troopers

  29. this is pretty cool but I think the reason it won't catch on in the mainstream has to do with digital storage manufacturer is needing to manufacture more storage I mean think about it if you had a one terabyte boot Drive that will still be functional long after you're gone then you wouldn't need to buy another one so how would the storage manufacturer be able to make money after everyone buys one

  30. It’s cool tech. But I’ll stick to ZFS on cheap drives. Hasn’t failed me in over 10 years.

  31. Linus Magic Tips

  32. 0:150:22 probably some clues
    5:49 Barcode part 1
6:03 Number to get Rick Rolled
    6:44 Paper has incomplete barcode
7:03 Probably nothing, but note these letters just in case lol

Comment if you see anything else, this is just what I found on a quick glance through. Good luck!

  33. You know what could contain 8000 characters and could survive even more time and a FeRAM?

    A damn book.

  34. I’m personally a huge fan of mram technology

  35. my issue was never having any data getting corrupted or anything of the sort, just keep losing my goddamn flash drives

  36. WAN show helped me through the day and this vid is going to help me fall asleep. My family is in rough shape and y’all’s content is exactly what I need right now. So thank you!

  37. So, does that mean when you use a language like C++ and use a pointer, it is able to do that because of RAM, you can grab any part whenever you want without having to surf the tidal wave of data?

  38. just carve it into a stone tablet, much cheaper and probably last longer.

  39. Imagen, 200 years in the future and they find this USB.
At LAST ancient tech we can still read!!!
Just for it to be a text log that says, "DEEZ NUTS"

  40. Linus why does your videos allow Picture in Picture on iPhone without YouTube Premium?

  41. So, who found the USB?

  42. Is this episode Super Troopers X Better Call Saul" Tech Addition?

  43. If it runs fast, why put it on usb-a? USB4/Thunderbolt seems better. Or M.2. or whatever else that's fast

  44. 55ns ram, welcome back to 1991

  45. Is Linus in Vancouver, BC?! That's where I live!!! Awesome.

  46. Noice!

  47. how did you swap out the usb wit the ssd that was sick af

  48. thats really cool!

  49. Boring!

  50. As long as it survives a Linus drop
