At $15,000 for a Mac Studio, you can build a cluster of four Framework Desktops with 160 compute units and the same 512 GB of RAM.
But 8 gb extra ram cost 250 euro now instead of 230 euro. And other options are also more expensive.
The mac studio is pretty amazing, as an AI person, we really can't buy the hardware like that normally. To buy an A100, or a DGX you need to go through enterprise purchasing, and sadly being a little AI researcher who just wants 80+GB of VRAM to train a computer vision model… It's no good. I do wonder about how well the M architecture actually works for training. I have an M1, and it's great, especially for running a local gpt model, but for training? I tried it back when it was a brand new machine, and it was painfully slow, really not much better than a CPU load. I guess part of the issue is CUDA is SUPER optimised, it's been around for years, and has the smartest people working to make it siiiick. I am curious if serious work has been done to improve training performance, I'd buy one in an instant if it had! A lot of AI research is a pain in the ass because of the VRAM requirements, we don't need faster chips as much as we need cheaper, large VRAM. If it takes 3x longer, but I can use higher image resolution, or bigger batches, that opens the door to so much research. Because unless your org can afford a DGX, or are willing to foot the cloud compute bill running into tens of thousands, you are seriously limited in what you can do :/

I have an AM 4 MoBo with an 8 core Ryzen 7 5700X CPU that can take up to 128 GB of RAM, with 64GB of RAM installed and two open slots for 64GB more, but haven't ever saw it use more than 20something G's and that rarely. Maybe if I upgrade it to the Ryzen 9 9500X 16 core processor it may need more RAM to be fed more bits to munch on for munching so many more, so much faster!

First mistake was buying an apple anything besides the iPhone lol
First CPU based benchmarks of the M3 Ultra show quite disappointing results: 20% slower than the M4 Max in single core performance and just 8% faster in multicore, even with double the number of cores. Seems like it may be worth the money only if you need GPU power. But … current large LLMs just barely fit into even 512 GB of RAM, so this advantage may be gone within a few months with the next generation of LLMs. And Macs are not expandable and an AI cluster even with TB5 as interconnection is not very effective and costs a fortune.
Seems to me that there are almost no reasons to spend so much more money on a M3 Ultra Mac Studio. Maybe the only reason for the existence of it is in deed to make an upcoming Mac Pro attractive again. But now Apple cannibalizes the Mac Studio with the Mac Mini, they just shift the problem with their product range around. I would guess one of these product lines will have to go.
To avoid tariffs you just have to make final assemby outside of China, pretty simple
