I have a Synology NAS that I bought used because it seemed like one of the most easy to use options, and I like it for what it is. When I look at new NASes I'm mostly just shocked at the price, why are they so expensive anyway? I think if I do upgrade at some point down the road it'll have to be a custom one in an old office PC case or something.
1:20:00 That's cool and all, Jagr tho
Luke with the Gamer bladder, Linus with the Grandpa bladder. 😉
I can kind of see where Synology is coming from… is what I would be saying if they acted in good faith. Apple did a similar thing for third-party batteries, basically saying "we can't certify these numbers" as a justification to hide them, which now has become a simple warning under the battery health that it may not be accurate. (Which is how it should have been from the start, not denying Apple has been / is hostile to third-party repair.)
Synology locked its customers out of basic features that the filesystem supports (deduplication), and SMART health data. To, what, razor-and-blades a NAS ecosystem? Not because "we can't certify these drive lifetime estimates", but because they want a profit margin every time you buy a drive. That is despicable.

You can tell I'm not into ice hockey. I was looking and that and going "Meh".
Integrate with PC part picker
How many cups does McDavid have?
Wow, fuck Synology.
Luke took over the LAB? as in replacing Garry? was there an announcement I missed?
Please add GEOMAN results to the LTT LABS website comparison! Thanks!
Ideally, you want to have both: Price Per frame for specific components like GPUs and CPUs… AND Performance Per Dollar for the entire system.
Partner with PC Part Picker since they have all the cost stuff done, and it just needs Labs' numbers to give real perf/$ for different scenarios

Linus isekai tips?
Price Per Frame is AMAZING! Thank you for that! It will be SO USEFUL, worldwide!
I think the 8gb/16gb rollout is to make a clear distinction between what will be allocated for SI/Enthusiast/Etailer/PC Retail. shops. Unsure how it breaks down, but if I had a bunch of systems I was trying to build/sell for customers who just want a PC with 'entry level graphics,' they might end up 5060 ti 8gb in those situations. I'd put those in prebuilts all day long, where you want a smaller/more efficient card to pair with the lower powered nature of most prebuilt PCs.
Then I'd ship 5060 8gb to places like Walmart/Amazon, places that 'sell GPUs' but aren't 'PC component specialty,' where I'd sell directly any 16gb 5060 ti. I don't think that's how it's breaking down, but I'd understand that.
I did not know Luke took over management in Labs. Being a manager myself, first I was like… wait? Really? Then I figured, I do not know Luke other than from videos so I cannot judge, then he explained what he did and how he does it. (Yes, personal emotional rollercoaster) and I truly think and also hope he will have a really good time managing Labs and making sure the engine runs smooth as heck. Go Luke!
I think, for the GPU upgrade program, if you could input the individual parts + cost (similar to a build pc part picker) and your budget for the gpu, it could give a relative value for the GPU upgrade.
Resume @31:30
For the FPS/$ tool – I'm thinking it like a stand alone tool.
First screen – User selects "Full new system or GPU upgrade, (maybe third that is just pure comparison)", and there is a 1-3 sentence explanation why this matters.
Second Screen (Dynamic based on choice) – Here the user inputs the data for the cards and their system. Each input has a "info" button next to it, that the user can hover to get an 2-3 sentance TLDR why this is an important metric for the comparison.
Third – Show the graphs.
5:04 it's a bit more nuanced, hard drive S.M.A.R.T. and other diagnostics is a mess. I completely understand that they want to have a few hard drives that they tested.
You lot need a user with the system setup to be punched in, so the graphs pick from that.
Australian government has a PKI Government verified identity system called myID, there is no reason that if cannot be used to provide verification process for third parties where a platform has a key signed using myID that is unique to the platform that the platform can then use to re verify you against the myID system as nessessary, myID also knows your underage status and can verify it via s aimple API flag, withoiy the site needing to have your DOB or knowing what the age of concent laws in Australia are, no need to send them anything and as the key the platform uses is generated by the platform at setup, it would be very hard to use it as a unique ID to merge data from other sources. The governmemt os the only one that has your 100+ pointa pf ID which they already have as they issued it. Ita a good way of using government issues propf of ID but not share that id information with third parties. The ID os mainly used for ID for digital government systema, but it is already being used for thong such as security background checks for critical infrastructure projects yo verify employees security clearances and citizenship without each company needing to process seperate police checks etc. Thos is an expansion on the very successful Working with Children verification syatwm run by the Australian Justice department to help prevent child offenders from working with children at sports and social clubs as well as within schools and medical facilities as they wpuld not be issued a WWC permit, but not having a WWC check wasnt socially damaging if not working woth children as iy was only required of you were trying to work with children. The new myID syatwm has been expanded to now approving people to work on critixal infrastructure ehile not being discrimanatory to people who may not pass those security xhecks in non critical infrustructure industries. There is no reason why proof of age cannoy be dealt with in the same ways. We also already jave digital driver licenses as well, Australian government is very digitally progressive, it helps having a smallish population we have, adoptio is faster.
During time index: 28:11 you spoke of "Shadow-Banning" people who said something you found disagreeable… You said that you did so because they were: "…Actually too stupid for me to listen to anything that you say ever again." I would argue that there should be just a normal ban — with a comment under the offending statement making it clear why the offending user is no-longer allowed to participate in the discourse. Or, you could allow a little freedom of thought & expression.🤔
P.S. Even if "Shadow-Banning" works, it's still a form of slowing down the speed of society to that of the dumbest ass in the drove. (Yes, a group of donkeys, or asses is called a drove) which actually weakens society to the point where — well, just look around you… These problems are caused by people innocuously putting the thumb on the scale of freedom.
Disappointed with my B580, can't play a game in 1080p and watch youtube
The clip linus is thinking about is from the Olympics. The mario lemuiex video.
To the system configuration at 1:00:00 you could work with percentage costs. CPU's for gaming pcs are allways roughly 20%of the total cost, while GPU's are around 30% on the lower end and up to 50% on the higher end. Combine these percentage to the full price and sort by price per fps and its already decent.
Edit: Ohh, they kinda get to something in that direction later.
Love the WAN Show, but lately, the topics are as thrilling as a wet fart in a windstorm—poof, no impact!
We’re drowning in NVIDIA 50 series launch gripes—yeah, it was a dumpster fire, but nobody cares anymore! And Synology? Trust’s gone after they botched the RiskStation zero-click vuln like amateurs.
Meanwhile, 2025’s tech scene is popping off! Consumer robotics is wild—picture Tesla’s Optimus helping grannies with chores. What could it do, and what’s the catch (cost, safety)? Also, that OpenAI-Oracle-Nvidia data centre collab is massive! Why’s this dream team uniting, and is it for next-gen AI or something crazier?
Drop the stale GPU rants and give us some Linus-Luke hot takes on these bangers! And, keep the Elon bashing to a minimum, i know he is a divisive character, but tesla products are about tesla, not him!. Thanks see you next week.
Bought an arc card last week for my living room rig works great.

12:30 I believe Synology found out because you did a short announcing the video. I remember that short because I was excited to see that video and then it never published. The short showed a DIY NAS (I think the case was a Silverstone CS381 or similar) and the camera panned to the monitor where the Synology software was running.
After that idiocy they pulled now, Synology is now off my NAS list for future upgrades. I've been a customer of theirs for over a decade.
@LinusTechTips could you possibly partner with PcPartPicker and have users use a link to a 'built' system and then do the same price comparison relative to the entire build? If the component is already populated – indicating an upgrade – you could then also do that delta (in the case of flipping the existing component for the new one) either by intuiting the difference or just having users put something in themselves.
Synology YOU HAVE FAILED THIS CITY!!!!!
