The controversial Windows Recall feature is back after a significant delay. But did Microsoft take the time to address the problems, or were they just waiting for us to forget how dangerous it is?

  1. Hey folks, we saw your feedback about the previous thumbnail and we have adjusted it to remove AI-generated faces. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into account for future thumbnails.

  2. Old Recall + New Recall = Total Recall 😉

  3. Best sponsor matchup recall-deleteme 😂

  4. Hot take: other people enabling recall and "leaking" your chats is essentially nothing since they can already do that by simply doing screenshots, it's not a new threat.

  5. Now I'm glad still on windows 10

  6. Hey linus I have been watching your videos since your garage days. So here's my story regarding windows ,When win 11 got released was happy to see the UI changed to look modern but usability wise some goto features/shortcuts are shit like – the right click menu, the battery, brightness one, the copying indicator on taskbar and many more.

  7. Thank you Linus! I am saying this all the time. And the most people trusts M$.

  8. Meanwhile SteamOS : Stonks !

  9. 2:43 that team notification sound was annoying

  10. Prioritising security doesn’t mean prioritising privacy

  11. because of this bs I switched to linux 6 months ago..

  12. SteamOS please save us all

  13. Just install Linux Mint with a Windows theme. Get out while you can.

  14. 12:41 That's not a valid point to give them credit for, lol
They didn't do it for our privacy but to save their tarnishing reputation and for the AI PCs to actually sell. Also, even if encrypted, why is the OS letting those files stay viewable anyway? Didn't the same company introduce a quantum computing chip (or was it Google or both?) Pretty sure that such tech will be able to decrypt such files in a longer run.

  15. Hey everyone, long time windows user and professional here. It's what I started on and built a career in I.T. off of.

I just want to say I am happily daily driving Linux Mint; a project I started on a whim for self development.

I found myself unable to give a rational explanation of why I would use windows other than "It's easy and I know it already".

After watching this video I know I made the right choice.
Everything works perfectly on Linux, and I am proud of it; a feeling windows hasn't given me since the first time I overcame the challenge of installing it.

I want to tell those who are wanting to switch but are nervous: don't be. It's so easy. And worth the effort.

  16. The encryption doesn't add as much security as you would think. You can decrypt the data, so the decryption keys are stored locally in a way that your user profile can access them. Someone or a malicious process running in your user context will also then have access to those keys and can decrypt the data.
It does protect against cross profile access, and someone won't have access to it if they get access to the raw data or your hard drive. But a virus, someone physically accessing the computer logged in as you, or someone that can force you to log in, will state have access to everything.

  17. "Are you sure you want to break into this bank and steal everything?" ->> Continue.

  18. I can't give MS credit for finally adding encryption which should've been done from Day 0 on the original. How does such a feature go from conceptualization to laying out its architecture to actual code being written without any thought given to using standard encryption? That signals a culture at MS that, despite its PR Talk, does not have security at its core. I can guarantee majority of this channel's viewers, if shown a preliminary block diagram of how Recall was supposed to work in 2024, would've asked "but where's the encryption?".

  19. So, to summarize, Microsoft took a full year to allow linguists (with some definite talent) to rephrase the FAQ, and a few weeks of developer work to provide us with this "new" version of a product that is still, to say the least, "subject to discussion."

    Regarding "no other app will look at your data" + "your data will not leave your computer";

If the Recall app (v2025), based on my data, generates a "summary" and sends just this summary to Microsoft, technically my data is not "at Microsoft," but…certain information about my personal data, on the other hand, certainly is.
This is where we see the subtlety of the linguists' rephrasing.

  20. just switched to linux, thank you Microsoft.

  21. really not even using windows 11 even for Gaming ,& also i never want to update to Win 11 for real ,

    i don't know why win 10 is still better for many thing's & game's

  22. Having screen shots saved from your computer will be the circumvent scam calls, blur is not destructive for data. Plenty of tools can unblur with great accuracy. All it will take is one piece of malware than was injected into a piece of software that is commonly downloaded, or through emails and the data will be endless. Call centers will dwindle as they move to data processing to either sell to companies for profit or steal user data. Where there is money to be made someone is there. It’s not a matter of who breaks it first, it’s a matter of how long before there is nothing Microsoft can do to stop the threat.

  23. hey! Open the AsymStore files in a hex editor, maybe its just not jpg?
Ok, sure, its probably encrypted but please check

  24. 0:19 yeah the stazi would have loved this lol

  25. What a thumbnail

  26. Sorry LTT but what is the gotcha here?

You demonstrate that if someone has local admin and physical access to a computer, they can do damage? With that same set of circumstances they can install anything they want for long-term tracking, or disable the AV, or do whatever they want.

In the cybersecurity world, we do what we can to prevent people becoming local admin, but all your debunks are based on the assumption they have it.

  27. The database is encrypted using AES now. And I guess the screenshots are as well.
But where do they store they KEY for that encryption?

It would have been nice if that was covered in the video.
If the key is just a file next to all the others there is basically no benefit. It just adds extra steps to get at the data..

  28. As someone that use WIndows mainly for Gaming i really think Steam OS is the future for us Gamers

  29. So if I disable my TPM, secure boot, and disable disk encryption in Windows then this app will never install or work, I'm good then.

  30. Here is the big thing that I don’t understand. Who uses “microsoft services” to the point where this would be a good product? Outlook , outlook calendar is basically the main thing everyone use is it not? Outlook that has a search function totally making this services void? Like if Meta did it , although i would never trust them with something like this I would kinda understand since they own Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook. 3 apps 90% of people use daily to communicate and make plans. So yeah there is a use case. With Microsoft is completely pointless. Its just a ploy to gather even more telemetry on its customer base. And there is already 20+ telemetry services settings hidden away. Come on Microsoft. Do better

  31. i love this feature actually, dont know why everyone is soo concerned. i wished this was there in mobile phone also.

  32. The only fix to Recall is discontinuing Recall

  33. The "convenient location for hackers to target" point is absolutely 100% fair and accurate, but at the same time I think Linus is… not aware how much of the same stuff is already spread out across various histories and caches. And sure, those aren't all in a single place, but at the same time, they aren't that spread out either (there isn't all that many popular apps). And that's not even talking about how most of the services we use are cloud services. A local copy of a bunch of stuff other companies (and thus (with a lot of effort) governments) already have access to sounds… maybe even positive?

  34. Remember to use linux or windows 10 – pirate activation of ESD for 5 years extra updates is almost here

  35. Remember if the AI features is going to do anything with the stored data it needs to work with it decrypted, so the key is likely next to it, or available in the TPM, to both microsofts program and others.
If they just stored it it'd be a pointless feature

  36. after sponser how to install windows , then you say ( i am not take microsoft safty )are you dump to think we are dump ?

  37. LINUX 😀

  38. The thing is, I just dont want this? Like it doesn't matter if its completely safe. I just don't want my OS to just record everything I'm doing. I'd rather would have Microsoft focus on fixing just Windows 11 really. All these AI apps just seem to be this super dodgy badly programmed crap just to get AI stuff in there as quickly as possible with no one really having any real need for it. Their copilot app constantly crashes and really is just a webbrowser shell and now this recall. Its all just sooo dumb.
