It is of my opinion that the vast majority might be in need of a DAS rather than a NAS. But I could be wrong.
You only need NAS if you are in security, have a business or a serious porn collection !

Not gonna lie, it would be a tremendous investment to keep pictures of all the trees I've chopped in Runescape, 4k, all ultra – got some nice willows, a couple of yews, even some oaks from 2006.
Yes, yes I do. I've actually been thinking about building a custom one for a while now. The pre-built ones all seem limiting.
My NAS is a laptop from June of 2012, slightly modified to hold 3 drives; installed TrueNAS Scale, and voila!
No need for NAS. A normal External HDD would be fine for storing files.

I've got an 8 drive QNAP NAS, probably the best thing I ever bought. Got a 1000 movies ripped in full quality either DVD, bluiray or 4K depending on the source disk Use a quality media player like a Dune 8K and you've got the ultimate home cinema solution. Entire collection catalogued and organised with official IMDB information done automatically by the player, you just browse and play.
While it's very easy to install drives and operate, you can make one just as good with an old PC and a few drives, running TrueNAS.
There are guides on YouTube showing you how to do it.
