Go to the Dome!
Follow The Dome –
They rebuilt the Las Vegas Sphere… but in Vancouver. We’re going behind the scenes at The Dome Vancouver to see how a handful of engineers transformed a leaky 1960s planetarium into a cutting-edge 10K projection experience. Between vintage hardware, creative cooling, and modern GPUs, this local project is way cooler than it has any right to be.

4:36 if light is "wasted", can some solar panels be used there to capture it for electricity? 🤔
This was awesome!! If you go to another planetarium, then playing Kerbal Space Program could be pretty cool… maybe with some shaders & mods to make it even more spectacular!
You should definitely come visit Prague sometime. We’ve got a very similar planetarium here that was recently upgraded with a full LED dome, and the image quality is absolutely top-notch. I saw it myself during an art event few days ago and it was stunning.
I bet DBrand will be the sponsor for Linus's funeral. Just imagine the coffin will have shortlinus references on it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Where is this sphere?! Vancouver?! Calgary?! Toronto?! Montreal?!
Instead of running a 4k send, you should have tried a 1440 triple wide, and wrapped it 3/4's around the room.
I appreciate the Southpark reference 🎉😂
In grade 5 our whole class actually took a field trip there and we watched a short film about the galaxy in there. It hit me deep, not only for the film, but also because I had a massive stomach ache
That concrete mesh is designed for acoustics, it is similar to how band shells are made.
Imagine watching insta reels on that
Still too much set up for 2minutes of playing with it.
Love to see passion and industry projects
These going somewhere and show us how it work have been very cool
Last time I was in my local planetarium, it was almost 10 years already. It is a bit more modern being opened in the late 80s. It is also larger having 23 meters in diameter and 320 seats. But I wonder how their screen is made because the dome is actually made of reinforced concrete and from inside you can see white seams that form a brick pattern. They still have their original projector working and they have installed a similar system to one in a video back in 2016, though I don't remember ever seeing behind the scenes.
Its connected via DVI?
That Bass drop on my Crusher Evo melted my brain lol
I really loved the planetarium as a kid and was sad to learn that it's all digital now. The huge analog projector was magical.
First of all: It's cool to see them getting the Sphere to try something like this out.
On the other hand: WHAT THE ACTUAL F is that condition of these chairs?! Like why are they already this much damaged? (Yes I know that place has many visitors and wasn't just build yesterday but it has ONLY been exactly 2 years…. TWO! These Seats have to be of very poor & bad condition and materials of extremely low quality [speaks for the overall Expenses they went to for this project. Yes the Tech might be highTech, BUT seems that everything else ain't…] that something like that can happen this fast….)
Ok so a little explanation of screen. while the perforations are very helpful now for accoustics, its original and probably more important purpose is letting light pass through. so think about this, the dome is a lot like a curved reflector like a headlight and that means that a highely reflective surface would reflect light from, originaly, the old zenith projector and now the newer digital ones, and instead of bouncing down or out towards the audiance as would happen with a flat movie screen it's cureved so that point of light could bounce accross to the opposite side of the dome and make an unintended haze ruining the contrast and clarity. so the perferations are a compromise of being just reflective enough to view the projection on.
So what is up next guys? Game on GAME ON A DIGITAL IMAX theatre
I have been here before, pretty cool to see behind the scenes!!
8:01 god damn
This is very interesting
andy left ltt?
I volunteer at a local nonprofit Planetarium, and while this place might not be the sphere, it's still pretty nuts. Our dome is about a third this one's diameter. We still have an old 60's projector too and a more modern fisheye digital projector. I've tried to game on the dome but it's pretty difficult, we don't have the tech that they do. I've been trying to figure out how to use my Steam Deck as a controller for a while. Planetariums end up as repositories for a lot of weird old tech and janky solutions, it's always a nostalgic smell. That Pink Floyd show is no joke, we've tried getting it but the license is thousands of dollars, way more than we can afford.
Finally, an interesting Canadian content piece from LTT.
Square space!
Amazing video! I always wondered how planetarium works, thank you for that insight. <3
Also, kinda jealous for that Dark side of the moon experience.
1:38 Dat mullet tho…😂
7:22 That’s an HP Z8 G5 Fury (I used to work at HP), those are top of the line (depending on your components) and NOT cheap.
The case has some neat features though, and they are definitely workhorses. The graphics lab had some older workstations running at full load continuously for a decade or more. They even won a Grammy once!
Without the $25-30k on GPU’s that’s easily a $12K PC
i love this content because it also promotes a local staple 🙂
i love going to the plane'arium
Cake is cake
cool to hear tounchdesigner on Linus Tech Tips
this is my favourite ltt video ever. pls more like this!!!!!
Oh damn, I toured this recently. They did have a preview of a film made for that format. I didn’t realize it was more than a limited number of odd films.
Linus' death – Sponsored By DBrand
1:40 is that Pauline Hanson? 🤣🤣
Projecting onto a dome is not the Sphere
Do the Las Vegas one now I wanna see what you get for that price
Gotta love the royalty free version of Pink Floyd music lol
if dbrand isnt the sponsor of linus funeral ill be dissapointed
Those are OUR PROJECTORS!!! SO glad you enjoyed them 😁! -Christie Digital Employee
I like how many videos in the last couple months have been “this is the most insane screen. Let’s game on it”
I’m ALWAYS here for that lol
