Some might say “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” and just go about their daily lives, blissfully unconcerned. For the rest of us, there’s GrapheneOS, the secure, open-source mobile OS built on Android’s AOSP that puts the user back in charge! But it sounds too good to be true… An end to corporate spyware and bloatware draining your phone’s performance and compromising your data? What’s the cost? Is Linus ready to pay it?

De-Google your life, first step: Buy a Google phone.
Bwahahaha 😂. Testing the uber private Graphene OS and then installing the devil's Facebook 🤣
I wonder why F-Droid isnt in the app store list in the main graphene app store, or atleast easily found.
Never Settle; Please consider to buy two smartphones one high end and one budget phone if you have the budget one for your everyday convenience and the other for your paranoia. Simples! Plus Keep in mind the next time you travel use your budget phone with GrapheneOS if necessary.
10:55 – Throughout the video you make remarks that are absolutely not essential. Who cares about Android Auto?! The idea of GOS is Privacy & Security. This in itself means no Google and no iOS. The phone is not for technologically illiterate people, snobbers who want to be fency or typical iOS users who think that the phone gives them some status in society. Criminals have used it. Okay, great, so GrapheneOS really does provide Privacy and Security – it performs the functions it is presented for. This is part of our inherent right to freedom and privacy as human beings. I don't give a damn about the obsession with control of government and supra-governmental entities around the world. GOS is a symbol of rebellion against the status quo and the system of slavery and control. GOS says "F*ck you Big Brother".
What the hell is up with the earrings? You would've thought you'd be over that stage of your life when you were like "in your teens"! Dudes wearing earrings is kinda gay, or a teen phase at a stretch in your early stages of development.
Ok, but what about “if it’s free, you’re the product” ?
What’s with the very low level background music? Very distracting once noticed.
I use Graphene btw
What in the name of Graphene what happened to your teeth
ABOUT TIME THIS VIDEO DROPPEDDD
2026 YouTube: This video is harmful and dangerous
8:25 not true. JIT compilation was removed in Android lollipop. A hybrid was reintroduced in Android 7.0 but I believe pretty much all apps use AOT compilation, so it’s not unique to graphene OS
For me, just the bloat-free experience is worth the hassle to use GrapheneOS. it's great !
F droid is cool also because it has some nice apps for Pixel phones, like dimmable flashlight or better multi screen management
If you getting this so the "government cant track you" you're 100% wasting your time with this… If the NSA or FBI wants to find you they will this will bearly slow them down.
Mainstream Android stopped doing JIT MANY years ago Linus, come on…
Basically just a new “Linux” option for your phone for people to argue about “USE GRAPHENE OS IT’S SO MUCH BETTER!” just like Linux and Windows 😔
Linus does not seem to be the person of GrapheneOS target audience, it's just not intended to be used as a regular phone OS, everything is an annoyance
I tried running only apps from the aurora store but for some reason like every other app is dependent on google play services for notifications 🙁
Graphene makes you spend time for your security hey… Doesnt sound any different from me going through 100 sub menus for a couple hours over days in stock (cos theres something i forget and remember later with all those darn menus) to disable and remove all the things I don't want every new phone
1:15 Okay this was actually a VERY unique segue, thanks to the editor who made it unique by pointing out how contradictory Linus is for saying it’s unique. Very meta!
My only issue with graphene os is that it's basically only for pixels.
So advocating for one's privacy is now considered being a criminal? I don't know you but I wouln't like some random stranger walking into a toilet with me so he can peak at what I am doing on my phone. How would you feel having somebody always watching over your shoulder to see what you are doing on your phone and then sell that data to highest bidder?
Giving up privacy on the premise that I got nothing to hide is like giving up freedom of speech because I got nothing to say?
Great video, any long term video review on the new iPhone
Why does Linus look so different today…
Thank you for finally trying this, I was in disbelief when this came out. Overall I think the video was great but I sadly have some criticism. I think there was an over-emphasis on the trade offs.
When I first used GrapheneOS years ago, I was most surprised by how well everything "just worked". To be fair I don't use Android Auto, so for me the only issue was "don't forget to enable background battery usage for Google Play Services".
Aside from that & the issues with Android Auto, which GrapheneOS could easily do a better job explaining to the user what to change during installation, maybe an optional 1 click pop up for optimized Android Auto settings. But aside from those 2 issues you pointed out, it really doesn't sound like you encountered any serious usability problems.
At this point, now that you've already installed it & learned its very few kinks, why not just keep using it? Are you likely to be hacked? No, of course not. But in your life, what are the drawbacks to using this phone, because I haven't seen that many from this video. Unlike Linux, aside from enabling a couple permission toggle, you don't really tinker with the OS, so in its day to day effect, how significantly is it impeding your life, if at all?
Nonetheless thank you for making this video, its great that THE Linus Tech Tips finally covered this amazing product. I hope one day you can enjoy it & its benefits just as much as I do.
I just want a virtual android for my Android so I can easily migrate it to another phone.
Don’t know why I’m watching this as an iOS user, but I am lol
Idk sound like another Operation Ironside 😅
Tldr,
Linus stole a bike
Fiiiinally! Been waiting too long for this video! Recently switched and it's elite! Got so sick of google everything, so switched more because why does google need to track everything i do! 'Nothing to hide' but nothing to advertise either!
Been using seperate profiles, which has its own bugs, but it's been a decent experience. Not sure if i'll stay this way or revert to 1 sandboxed profile though 🤔
I also had 0 issues woth the banks i use in Aus!
3:56 hardened Chromium? Funny you say that because chromium is the hardest metal
Don't call it a criminal phone…
They already have to deal with this kind of press.
