After making videos about old media formats like LaserDisc and DVHS, we came to the natural conclusion that we had to watch one movie across as many formats as we could get our hands on. Fortunately for us, one of the few movies available on everything from Betamax to 4K Blu-ray is the one and only Rambo: First Blood.

  2. 2:24 Not sure if we could say it was that. I would at the very least argue that 4-track/8-track vs. compact cassette was noteworthy enough to list.

  3. One of the best examples for the high fidelity of analog film to me is the HD remaster of Star Trek: The Next Generation. They went back to the original film to reprocess it in 1080p, they rerendered all the outer space scenes and everything. It's absolutely insane seeing the difference in quality between the original release and the remaster.

  4. Sponsor segway was a trip 😯

  5. Quote of the day: They found out that we wanted this filmick look. Speak for yourself. filmgrain looks ass. Said by a 36 year old guy that was with you guys on the road to good home movie watching. I do not miss the old days.

  6. ah your VCD copy is even in chinese. is it bootleg?

  7. 3:43 why over thirty? Im 27 and i had multiple vhs's

  8. make video of all digital versions of same movie

  9. Should have done streaming

  10. Theyre currently working on a new 4K for rambo

  11. You forgot 8k. It's rare, it's new and it seems to be dead on arrival and only in Japan you can watch 8k movies in TV, but it's real. But no official standard (quad layer 8k BDXL and Super Hi-Vision" (SHV) used in Japan are not international formats).
But you could rent a Samsung QN900D (Neo QLED 8K) or LG OLED Z3 (OLED 8K) and compare 4K movie files to 8k movie files and streams (youtube supports 8k – here is an example: https://youtu.be/1La4QzGeaaQ).

  12. HD DVD failed due to the PS3

  13. wenn testing the quality of tapes you really need to use the tracking button on the vcr….the picture quality can increase alot wenn doing so….

  14. Yall should do a quality comparison of the different streaming sites (would love to see if purchasing on Apple, Prime, Etc has an impact)

  15. I grew up with a VHS and had never meet someone who owned a laser Disc or videodisc, didn't even know the existed till now haha

  16. all of these are technological marvels! amazing to see how home theater evolved! VHS was great, because you could record from TV on a relatively cheap media.

  17. I had to respond to this video, with linus saying people like the film grain in their videos. Speak for yourself good sir!!! I cannot stand it at all ever it just ruins the image. I want there cleanest possible image.
I wish there was an option to not have it

  18. Never let Riley go

  19. No Video 2000 or VHD?

    For shame!

  20. next piece of media will just be 50kb discs with digital licenses that expire whenever they want them to and itll give you access to a 1080p stream for the content you are trying to watch and get this… it will still cost you $25

  21. its also time to adress the awful 4k versions of older movies…or 8k even….

  22. The bluray of Rambo had a pretty bad modern colour regrade, shifting it way to the dreaded teal and orange. (at least some releases, doesn't look like this one in the video did) EDIT: Actually, I would say the 4k looks pretty teal and orange, not "natural" at all.

  23. Here a great idea…
Make the same video but with streaming codec's thru the years….

    That would be a blast…

For example real media codec… playing video at modemspeeds 2.8kb bitrate… vbr… you can beat vcd easy… go find the perfect combo…

And you can answer 'what is the best codec to store my home made '4k' movies'

And no I have not a petabyte nas laying around….

    It's a idea….

  24. you won't believe i saw first blood first time in my life last night and today your video 🤭

  25. And here's when Blu-Ray goes hold my beer and introduces 8K High Def.

  26. Now do “Watching Rambo First Blood on all streaming services”

  27. couldn't have picked a better film

  28. I’ve started buying 4K blu-rays to build up a collection and backup to a NAS.

  29. You did DVD dirty by looking at it on a crappy TV. The format is actually awesome: tons of color, contrast and bitrate. It only loses to most streaming content in resolution, which is arguably less important than the actual bitrate. I get you went for vibes, but long live the king! (This is constructive criticism. Thanks for the great video)

  30. VCD sucked, but SVCD was actually quite good, at least on par with VHS if not better. While it supported up to 576 lines, most relies was on 360p. This is sufficient quality of that still at par with VHS if not slightly better and with the mpeg2 compression it could still hit 72 minutes on one disk. Some over burn could even reach 90 minutes on one disk, making it almost usefull

  31. All these years and Linus still cannot mouth the lines for someone else reading a prompter in the video.

  32. LaserDisc is just a CD/DVD in a vinyl form factor. Lol 💿

A 500-play estimate for RCA is actually insane. Why would anyone in their right mind buy it in that format if they knew the shelf life was so limited?

Part of the reason I got a PS2 for X-mas as a kid was because my parents wanted a DVD player, lol. Good times. 📀

  33. The Matrix was my last VHS and my first DVD

  34. The Linus staring into the the "YouTube comments"-void moments are jarring 😂 I do feel seen though, in a creepy It way 😅

  35. Can't wait for the braces-arc to be over.. I just can't look away

  36. It's sad to see physical media go.

  37. I remember watching the Hell boy and the Blade movies on VCD. Everything still looked HD back then 😂

  38. This was awesome

  39. I assumed you were going to watch it on YouTube and Netflix, too.

  40. I must fully watch First Blood now.

  41. in the early 90,s i was actually used to watching this quality, together with a color tv that was slightly broken…with everything being double lined….my eyes adjusted just enough not to get a headache, not even with adult stuff….also i rented a moviebox every weekend for years, with 10 movies, pretty cheap….so all was copied with home vcr….

  42. The DVHS being better than the HDDVD and BD is probably more due to mastering than the format.

  43. You should've asked LGR for tips about filming CRT screens, especially related to contrast and moire. He has a good video about that. 🙂 You are also only capturing every other field because of your shutter speed, is that on purpose? It makes the picture look half resolution compared to real life.

  44. How does this not have streaming at the end lol

  45. If you guys interested in D-VHS tapes I can encode any content into D-VHS with maximum bitrate for video and audio and plays on any D-VHS deck.

  46. 6:15 Linus next to a regular bluray disk and a regular sized TV

  47. Playing the DVD on a fuzzy CRT was not making it justice. DVD on modern OLEDs doesn't look all that bad.

  48. Where our WAN show on dvd or playlist of LTT videos of 2025?)

  49. How could you forget Divx discs? Does anyone else even remember them?
