As someone involved in the open hardware space, I'm seeing both commercial and hobbyist RISC-V MCUs take off! WCH (a Chinese company known for cheap USB to serial converters) has made a series of cheap microcontrollers using the ISA, the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 has some hobbyist-designed RISC-V cores in it, and the upcoming Baochip-1x open silicon SoC is based on two open RISC-V cores (and has 5 cores in total (4 for I/O coprocessing)). I think it has a bright future, and I can't wait to see it become more mainstream as it gets put into more things that need a specialized ISA like GPUs, signal processing ICs, and ML accelerators.
Bro, you completely ignored the ternary compute part of the question, and didn't even talk about RiscV apart that it's free. Maybe this was a good answer for the "broad audience" and stuff, but the guy who asked the question really sounded like he was hoping to hear something more… Please do a part 2 where you give us some technical (Not financal) pros and cons vs ARM, and at least say something about ternary
😂 teefs
RISC-V is actual RISC. ARM is literally more CISC than the Motorola 68k and x86 CPUs from the 1980s and 1990s.
Accessibility is everything.
Noice!
If we do this right many third party companies can make their own chipset at a very reduced costs thereby we can get a very cheap electronics and computing systems.
RISC-V…The most powerful RISC-V cores are only 2GHz,and without SMT…
I hope it would become usable soon, but…I don't seems to see any future of it on Nowadays PCs or Phones. But it's widely used on embedded platform tho.
My capstone project is designing and taping out a RISC-V processor that can boot Linux!
Risc-v being open source doesn't matter when the compsnies that adopt it don't also open source their design. To simply put it no tech company is gonna reduce their competitiveness by making the design the spent millions or billions on public.
It also comes with 5 risks or so
I’m old enough to remember Acorn RISC and it’s inherent advantages and disadvantages. I’m not sold on it getting a massive market share
Last Frame: Nightmare Fuel 😮
ARM is not RISC anymore. ARM v9 have similar amount of instructions as 486.
RISC-V is going to do for CPUs what Linux did for operating systems. IE basically take over pretty much everything except a few small areas. You will still get a few computing areas cling on to x86 in the same way desktops cling on to Windows but outside of those areas everything else will go RISC-V. It's already started.
ARM stands for Advanced RISC Machines
F-future? What do you mean future? RISC-V is very old and already present everywhere
RISC architecture is gonna change everything – ACID BURN
I hate members only 😤
Risc gets good
My master thesis is literally about RISC-V (and ARM). Perfect video timing.
i can't wait for someone to copy the home work, change it slightly, then close source it and higher people to work on it to make a profit
Old news, the initial standard, for the 5h generation of the Berkley RISC, was published in 2010, a separate, openly, sanctions avoiding, RISC-V corporation, was spun up in 2014, and they're still working on the standard, 15 years on, the RISC-I, RISC-II, RISC-III, RISC-IV were all published within 8 years.
Then Compare to x86, which had 95% of the Personal Computer market within 15 years of its 1976 launch, killing Mortorola, Sun, MIPS, … . Similarly ARM that had ~80% of the Mobile market, within 15 years of its 1985 launch. RISC-V implementations beat neither these on single core performance, or MIPS per mW. Nor do they offer open alternatives to the proprietary GPU, DDR, USB, thunderbolt, NPU, … units needed for a modern SoC.
CHINAS architecture
Lesser known fact: RTX5000 series GPUs have a small RISC-V core inside.
When will we listen to Linus in the sky ?
I am gay but nobody :(((((
that optimism about RISC-V's future… i'm kinda here for it. feels like a genuine shift.
