Samsung, LG, TCL, HiSense and pretty much everyone else tout the benefits of their “smart” operating systems included with their TVs. But honestly, I don’t need my TV to be yet another computer to serve ads to me and steal my data. I already got a bunch of those! But escaping from the grips of TizenOS, WebOS or even Android TV is difficult, especially when precious few companies sell modern displays without the OS cruft. Well, Sceptre has a 75″ TV that is simple as can be. But is their TV with no Smarts just plain dumb?

Just get an external streamer like an Apple TV or any android one
I kinda did the same I bought a large 4k monitor
I have an Akaï TV without smart functions.
Funny is that the vendor was repetively telling me there were no smart functions on it so I was shure not to get the wrong product.
But I just wanted a TV for 300€ or less (50" this one).
It fires up automaticly on every input. Google 4k u
My Oppo multi format reader (used for SA-CD)
And a computer
It all just work in secconds
I've done this with my Samsung S95B. You can set it to skip the Home Hub and go straight to an Input. I have a Apple TV 4K plugged in and it does all the control. Only need to touch the Apple TV remote, it turns on the TV and soundbar and controls everything. Haven't touched Samsungs crappy, laggy remote for ages now. Much better than the crappy Smasung Smart TV crap.
old laptop + old tv + hdmi cable + the seven seas = way better than smart tv
This is perhaps the most depressing product review ever.
"yeah its shitty, actually not good at all as a display, but since highend TV's are so painfully bloated I'd almost rather have this and I'll defend it on any angle"
Worst of all it's pretty much the same with all products, except it's longevity wise and not something you're able to review unless you're a repairman by trade.
The washing machine guy from the UK is excellent and he's practically fuming in every video.
Consumption fatigue is real.
Do the dumb TV mod!
I'm still using my old 2010 Vizio tv , of course with the help of Roku, now using Google TV
The worst part for me is that they use what are basically mobile processors that are drastically cheaper and worse than you get in phones. so the performance is always ass
Download projectivity launcher you will basically get this same outcome for free
Just realised I haven’t bought a TV in ~18 years, that has most of the same response times and menu features as that one. The “smart TV” stuff appears to only boot when you select the smart TV channel thingy. It is also way smaller and 1080p
Hmm… My TCL QLED is connected to the internet and it just powers on to my last input, which is a PC. I don't think I've ever looked at the Home screen or seen an ad since I finished setting it up.
The bar is truly in hell.
Upgrade
UFO 50 Bushido Ball mentioned
I don't know if this works with all TVs. With mine, if I don't accept the user agreement it basically turns into a dumb TV (so all online features, operating system and everything turns off). I can use it to run consoles or watch any tv channel that's not streamed. Which I guess companies would hate if more people did that 🤣
Why is pluff bald
Just buy a decent TV with ad tracking, and don't ever connect it to your network.
Isnt there a DIY aftermarket board that you could use to swap out the ad-loaded system? Benefit from the cheap nice display and get rid of the garbage
I don't see how I could ever buy anything except for a subsidised tv. I get a good panel, good specs and I always load direct in to one app with its interface that does everything for me. Sounds like if I buy a tv that is not subsidised I have to pay more for the same features.. I would rather bypass the ads on the subsidised one.
My so-called "smart" tv literally stopped working one day. This was annoying due to it being my bedroom pc monitor. I figured out the problem to be the cheap android board running it. The panel was still working fine so after some searching and emailing, I was able to find a dumb board that would work with my panel. An hour after receiving it (and modding the interface section), I had a tv that I could use with my pc again.
My 42 inch 2009 Insignia LCD dumb tv is still working like a charm and doesn’t have all the stupid smart tv crap. It doesn’t look pretty, but by golly I hate smart tv’s.
I actually don’t mind smart tvs if they weren’t pushing ads and spying on me and selling my data
I had an old Hisense “dumb” TV, and it was great. It booted quickly to the device I connected it to, and if the device ever got old and started lagging, I could just upgrade it while the TV can function as a TV
I love the idea of a dumb TV but need a way to connect it to my network for my so like an integrated Raspberry Pi would be nice
My current TV is a large flat panel display with a minicomputer attached to it for streaming via a browser (with ad blocker/security exentions) behind a firewall and VPN with an external digitial TV tuner attached along with a DVD player and Wii for fun. Also, if I don't subscribe to streaming services with a login, I can still watch stuff for free that way with extensions blocking the ads.
I would love a video showing how to make a SmartTV dumber, maybe change the OS or fix it somehow, specially in old SmartTVs
more expensive than a plane
this video is literally my search history answered
I'm curious. Would maximizing the TV brightness and other relevant settings, and using the Apple TV screen and color correction, would it make it any better?
My Hisense doesn't boot to home screen , have it set to last used ie the pc mostly.
TV dummy thicc tho
You should cover the opposite side of the industry and look at Telly, complete free tv because of a dedicated screen for adds.
Long live the Resistance.
I don't get it, you going on a rant about advertising when you do the exact same thing about your merchs and your sponsored videos…
To un ads and un a.i. everything, has always been the move John Connor is waiting for all of us to do. Long live the Resistance.
Is this TV capable of 4K? Can anyone confirm???
They rlly talked a whole bunch abt annoying ads on tvs and then proceeded to present their own ad😭
Avoiding ads with smart TV and we watched and full AD and in between segways 👏
Great use of free will, buy a tv and never ever connect to internet. It's the same
okay but can make my proper TV ad free and improve the OS? I used to like Hisense, it let me boot directly into my HDMI input now they f'd it up and made the experience a billion times worse with their update.
I bought a second hand entreprise advertisement tv. Sure it lacks a lot of features but it as "unsmart" as it gets. Just the most basic interface and settings menu is all it offers but its never ever failed me. The experience is so good that i forget its a separate advice. It feels like its part of my Apple tv
Pro-tip, on fire tvs you can set the tv to "store mode" to disable all the fire bs and just have a tv again.
you can just buy a normal "non-Smart" tv. Buy a Xiaomi Box. Then you can save more
In 2013, I bought one of the last available, large flat-screen "dumb" TVs from LG. I even got it 60% off because it would not sell because everyone wanted a "Smart TV" at that point.
I never bothered with that as I anyway have my media station PC hocked up to this TV anyway so anything a Smart TV can do, my PC can do a 1000 times better.
I still use this TV to this day and I don't see any reason to change it
9:59 did Linus leak his kid's name?
Cant you guys dim your lights with a flick of a switch? Tech tips but no light control??
Honestly, this is the first TV featured on LTT that I would ACTUALLY buy.
