  2. I actually just used ESPHome and an ESP32 to build me a dog water sensor so it alerts in HA when the water is low. I wasn't able to find a pre-built sensor that did this and yeah, it actually wasn't that difficult to do.

  3. I've built HA devices with ESP32 devices using WiFi and Zigbee. I've done it with ESPHome and custom software and it's not too hard, but I am a software guy. ESPHome is easy enough for everyone after a bit of learning

  4. I have ZERO computer programming experience but I used an esp32 and home assistant to build a automated dust collector system for my woodshop. Current sensors on the power wires for each tool feed back to the esp32, if it detects current it sends a signal to a servo to open the blast gate for that tool, close all the other gates and turn on the dust collector 5hp motor via a contactor. It turns off 10 seconds after current for the tool in question goes back to zero. It is all controllable in home assistant too so I could dial in the position of the servo motors operating the blast gate and have overrides. For example it only puts the program in the ready state if the lights are on in my woodshop so it wouldn't trigger by accident somehow. All the 2000 lines of code were written by claude and work flawlessly. My next esp32 project is going to be to add an air to water heat pump to my home heating system to run instead of my propane boilers until it gets too cold for the heat pump to keep up. I can even use home assistant to do some predictive modeling about upcoming cold temps and store heat in the buffer tank. I'm really looking forward to this as a next-level project!

    I've made 7 of my own from presence, motion, temp & humidity, camera and my favorites, WLED kitchen kick board lighting and under bed lighting. Only your imagination will limit what you can do. We'll done Apollo automation 😎

  9. Honestly one of the best updates to ESPHome was when they added thread support. Using OpenThread on a ESP32 C6 module allowed me to add a hidden thread repeater. This meant that while I waited for Ikea's Air Quality sensor (MoT) to come back in stock, I could add this C6 to extend the range of my thread network without needing to buy a plug or bulb.

    Out of curiosity, does the Apollo Starter Kit have a tutorial to set it up using thread instead of wifi?

  12. anyone got an idea? I want to keep track of where my cats are inside my house. I got 3 floors. One of the cats is deaf which is giving me constant heart attacks because I think I lost her. Espresence appears to be dead.

  14. 3:00 you should make a video setting up a esphome build server. i recently did this and it helped augment my HA running on my pi4 tremendously. i am using a docker on a linux host, but it looks like you might be able to use the desktop gui application too for this.

  15. (EEE student here) One thing's for certain, we're definitely gonna see a lot of DIY sensors now. But hey, I can't complain, DIY is more fun.
