Did I miss something? when you place the string between the two pieces of foil shouldn't there be a piece separating the two pieces of foil from touching the string alone is not going to do it.

I know a better way! Stick a thumbtack (pushpin, whatever you want to call it) in the wall, attach a rubber band to it and your doorknob, so when someone opens the door you will hear a snap and know someone's there! 😀

You should do something to make your door close automatically for when someone walks in your room and doesn't close the door
You know, fun idea and all, but seriously, if you're going to show people how to do something, show them how to do it a SAFE way. Using duct tape or basic tape for wiring is not the safest idea. Using a wire nut or a crimp connector is much safer. I understand that this is a low volt project and unlikely to run into problems with tape but if people are shown that they can do something small like this with tape, they tend to take that knowledge to bigger projects.

This would be great for an alarm to know if your door gets opened, especially if you have small children who like to sneak outside. Cheeper than the $30 magnet versions at the store

step one, gut fishing wire. step two, tie it to something sturdy and heavy. step three, tie other end to something heavier. step four, put less heavy object on elevate surface (preferably higher than someones head). step five, wait for loud thump and dispose of body accordingly. note human bodies are not recyclable.
