My Pixel 6 has the option to allow NFC scanning Locked or Unlocked.
Wait.. Youu said they're more SECURE because you need an unlocked phone to use them!!.. but then you said you choose iPhone because it doesn't need to be unlocked..

Hey! Great video! Surely I am going to get some NFC tags. 😊 Just one question. I was browsing, and I found out that there are 3 types of NFC. 213, 215, and 216. From what I know, the difference is the memory space. Is 213 (which is the most cheap one) will be enough for smart home?
Are these safe? I have an android, can someone just walk up to my phone scan nfc and take nfc tag with my phone info? Like the would have access to my text or gps…

Ok, I do like the NFC tags.. but.. I'll be honest. they seem to be more of a PITA to operate? then say just using your voice?
You need to actually have your phone on you and in your hand 24/7 walking around your home to activate those NFC's..
Personally, instead of having to touch an NFC at bedtime.. my wife has it set up (Google home).. so when she gets into bed.. she says goodnight to google. and it automatically turns off lights, sets her alarm, puts Spa music on for 1 hour. etc.
I'd use "hey google, start washer" or whatnot..
I"m big on automation. I use google for everything.. even on my phone in the car.. you can hit the NFC to open garage or say HEY GOOGLE open garage door. .. all the same, just voice instead of phone and NFC .. but I'm on an android phone so Iphones may not be able to do it as easily? Have it set up when we tell google to turn on Netflix to watch something. it automatically dims lights in the room.. turns on tv .. puts netflix up etc..
I think the NFC would be great for certain "security" type things.. like a tag on the side of your desk, that sets off a silent alarm if you run your phone over it.. OR NFC to unlock the front door? etc. and NFC on your dogs collar so unlock the doggy door so they can use it.. Lots of ideas for it , I'm sure.. just most of the ones you showed. I'd just use voice commands for.. IMO
This doesn’t feel “Smart” as much as connected. There’s a lot of human intervention here to make things happen. Cool, but not my idea of smart.
I like the storage idea, I think I'd find a way to have a picture of each item, to make it easier to know what's in there. Maybe using some kind of inventory software. Maybe just have a prompt when you scan the tag, to add or remove something from the container. And if you're adding something, you can take a photo to add it to inventory or pick from a list of things already in the system. Have a container tag for each room, and one for outside stuff. That way when you are putting winter stuff in storage and pulling out summer stuff, you can reassign things to the place they're going to be.
Basically a wet dream for anyone obsessed with organizing things. Lol
Plus I think having a photo log of all of your belongings could be a good thing in case you need to make an insurance claim or something.

Nfc tag that tells you what the switch does, ya if you wanna waste time, u could just turn on the switch, snd that'll tell ya.

The zip ties on the bin made my skin crawl. Looked like you used your teeth to chew the ends off, leaving sharp edges and unnecessary plastic sticking out. Why not cut them back neatly lol.
Do your tag tricks work with smartwatches, like Galaxy Watch 3 (or newer)?
Thank's for interesting ideas, however I prefer to not need to wander my phone with me while at home – therefore I solved most of the needs by adding special pushes to standard light switch (no extra cost needed, always powered on, you don't need anything to control it) or sometimes a battery-powered button. I can however imagine this for rare situations like putting house in "guests aboard" mode, which disables some of the automations tailored to the case where nobody else is at home.
how would I set up tag on ios so i dont have to tap the notification to fire event? is there a way?

I would love to see a video on creating a chore system for the kids using nfc cards or something similar. Collect it up to some strip lights to add up the chores each week and resets at the end of the week.
Reed, you have some of the best automations idea on the Tube. But I have some improvements for your laundry. I use a smart plug on the clothes washer to monitor the power draw to tell me when the load is done. Then I have a temp probe wrapped into a fold of the dryer exhaust hose. When the temp starts dropping fast, the load is done. I actually did these before I started using NFC tags. They work well and have high WAF because she doesn't carry her phone with her everywhere like some folks do. Thanks as aways and keep coming with the awesome ideas!

I dont understand the NFC washing and dryer idea. Why not use a outlet that checks how much electricity is being used? Build a notification automation on that and boom.. works every time (not just a static timer)
