We are making our first big purchase of testing equipment for the new lab, but there are a lot of things to consider. For headphone testing, we are purchasing a Head and Torso Simulator, but choosing between two state-of-the-art products requires some very thorough testing.

Correction: The graph at 8:15 titled "Average Bass Response for 25 Human Subjects" has a mistake in the legend. The AudioTechnica M50X is represented by the ORANGE line. The Sennheiser HD 650 is represented by the BLUE line.
Why didn’t you just get the freakish ears on a stand
Here we are near Christmas and we still haven't seen the fruits of this purchase. I was very much hoping to see some related content. This video hyped me up.
Here one neat trick that makes all audiophiles angry…. do actual testing.
Hmm I like ears on a stand better
You guys should test Trust headphones hehe
people with sound engineering degree can guess frequencies tho
i know i can
Linus doing absolutely massive things for the headphone community. Having a reviewer at his level of popularity, doing proper measurements, is the exact thing we need to shake up the headphone industry, and push for a demand for better tuning, and properly disclosing specs. These are standards for Hi-Fi, but consumer audio desperately needs to have this.
This video is hilarious lol
am i the only one who saw linus voice on the graph?
yo linus actually hired stephen hawkins
Howcome the keyboard tester gets to have eyes, but the headphone tester doesn't?
Lets not forget Linus apparently chopped off a human head to get a reference for the price of these bad boys.
I'd definitely love to see a test suite for bone conducting headphones, I've absolutely fallen in love with mine, but know it's easy to get burned even by products that seem to be the same in that market. I don't know how compatible these heads are with the them, but it's something I'm very interested in. It's possible they could be tested in a very different way as well. (Conducted through something that approximates the bone rather than something that's suppose to mimic an ear canal). There effectively 0 data on these products in the consumer space.
Bone conducting headphones are a big deal to me. They are more comfortable for me than most IEMs or Over Ear cups. Especially when I'm laying down. They don't interfere with my normal hearing, and they don't become uncomfortable over time (no ear sweat). I think it's an interesting challenge that the lab is more than capable of solving. The only worry I have is the market isn't quite big enough to entertain, and the products aren't diverse enough. Most are active ware (or claim to be).
Definitely, product diversity and a lack of feature set will hurt this pitch. Things that make sense for the technology aren't adopted yet. For example, the popular hearing aid like features on many high-end consumer smart listening devices are non-existent on consumer bone conducting head phones, despite being the same technology as many stand alone hearing aids. It would be akin to a pair of reading glasses for people with diminished hearing (where airpods might not help). Also, not everyone's hearing aids have bluetooth. They aren't nearly as fully featured. But I think the lab taking them seriously would give some serious streetcred to this underappreciated division of listening equipment, and might even give rise to new products that address some of the shortcomings in time. I'm genuinely excited to get a pair of LE Audio Bone conducting headphones in the near future and would love to see them.
A quick aside about Bluetooth LE, I swear to (something) that if they don't make a casting device that supports Bluetooth LE output soon, I'll lose my mind. I've been dreaming of being able to use my headphones with my chromecast for YEARS without a janky setup. I can't wait for the day where people can watch things in silence with their preferred audio device. Imagine if the volume could be whatever was comfortable to you and still enjoy it with other people.
Anyways, I know it's niche compared to the people looking to buy IEMs and Headphone, but I think it's worth a stab. I might even try making a test myself, I just don't have the budget to compare many headphones. I settled on the first pair that worked for me in my budget while shopping for them. But I had some duds along the way. Welp, I'm out of meaningful things to add.
Finally some objective testing. I'm stuck in my research for new headphones, because I don't want to spend money on headphones that hasn't had any subjective testing. And I can't make heads or tails of the terms used in the headphone reviews I've watched. I wanted to learn about the headphones, not learn a new dialect of English.
This is just an excuse for Linus to make ASMR video's lol
This is going to be awesome to see what you test and maybe even create later down the line with your new shop and gear!
Much Love!
An important thing to test is how confortable headphones are when used wearing glasses.
11:00 I feel "pretty legit" already, Linus. Thanks. Jake's voice
Having some experience with microphones, I'd have trusted your results less if you hadn't gone with the B&K. History matters, and B&K has an amazing history of measurement microphones.
What a surprise that the historically accurate game is made by Gaijin… lol Their attention to detail is really quite amazing.
Wait, this was 4 months ago? And you still don't have it?
Crazy.
I only use in ear buds. I really hope y'all get some HATS that work with them.
Ok and I thought the freakish ears on a stand were good.
3 months later, zero headphone reviews. Brilliant ROI.
Am I the only one or does anybody else also keep having the illusion of a smartphone being called and vibrating throughout the video constantly? I think it's because of the music.
It's like a loooow….pattern of vibration the whole time 😵💫
Now I want to know which one the bad one was. Was it GRAS?
I wonder how QC variances will be handled. This seems to be a particular issue with many earbuds, for example.
Did no one else notice the random Barbasol can at 11:24?
I love how LTT is going to call everyone out on their BS. The industry needed this
"For some they are a bit too small and keep falling out, something you might be familiar with.." Dayyuuummm
Message to the scientist at your lab: Get the beyer dt48A, as they are the go to tool for anything lab related for human hearing.
I actually enjoy them for music as well. – You can find them for $100-150 used.
Also, ditch the HD650 for used HD580, as it gives flatter sound and is overall better headphone. You can actually get more for selling 650 than what you would pay for used 580.
kinda bummed now that i saw this video again after some time. The spec sheets of the HMS seems pretty interesting and there doesn't seem to be anyone that used it, i think they're closer to the older data that's floating around and possibly a better representative of what headphones really sounds, but yeah, they're unpopular in the already ultra niche industry of headphone testing
