Many of you have been asking why we upload our videos in SDR instead of HDR. Well, we’ve been asking the same question, so let’s examine why HDR content creation is such a pain on YouTube, and what YouTube can do to help make things easier (hint: it involves LUTs!)

fr though, even if all creators can upload hdr willy nilly i doubt ill watch youtube vids on hdr unless its like a scenic shot or something. ltt videos or something similar type of videos id just watch on sdr cause whats the point? use up my battery faster? like i really dont need to see pc parts in hdr.
I mostly watch YouTube on my OLED TV, where HDR works just fine and it tells me which format it’s in. I think it’s working on my iPad too but it doesn’t flash it up to tell me in the same way. It sucks that it doesn’t look right on regular PCs though.
The first HDR content which impressed me instead of just having boosted saturation was Knives Out. The foggy nights and mornings had so much detail in their grey colours, the upholstery had such depth of colour, and the scenes with heavy light and shadow had so much detail in both. Yet it was recorded on film, which has more range than SDR, but average film has not as much as the best sensors. So I look forward to seeing where it can go in the future.
4:19 that is were I come 😢
Can you make a video on how to make HDR look good in windows 11 I tried everything
What about hdr hlg, hybrid hdr and sdr, it’s supposed to convert to sdr when someone watching from a sdr display and hdr when someone is watching from a hdr display..
Laziness / Incompetence / Colton 🤣🤣🤣
Wow, did the editor just call Colton lazy and incompetent? 😅😅😅
I got a 1080p HDR display that's pretty nice as my main monitor on my desktop rig.
Im fighting to be able to upload an HDR video using Davinci Resolve. The video plays well in my computer but I'm not able to make youtube recognize it. Anyone can help?
Sounds like a good oportunity for sites like Floatplane to implement a good HDR solution
BRO THIS MAN DID NOT JUST SEGUE AN ANALOGY ABOUT A DISAPPOINTING CHILD TO AN ADVERT FOR A FATHER'S DAY SPECIAL 💀
HDR will be removed and put behind a pay wall… just like 4K is or will be soon for all.
People watching with night shift enabled
Also this comes down to the PS Vita chicken and egg problem
I have been uploading hdr youtube using the cheapest hdr recorder. A second hand mobile phone, Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium. It can record HLG. Only in 10 bits. That should be good enough for most mobile phones. For TVs, need at least 4K as Linus mentioned.
device is not the issue, the issue is network speed
most people dont watch youtube on hdr and 1080p because it take ages to load for most people and on top of that wasting their bandwith
not everyone is a millionaire that can afford industrial unlimited fibre broadband internet like you, linus
I would suggest that LMG hosts a PeerTube server.
why is this video not in HDR?
I don't know if it would make sense from a money perspective, but I would totally pay LTT a monthly or yearly fee for you to upload videos to Vimeo or another platform in HDR
many HDR display are 8bit FRC, not real 10bit
content is created for P3 and not 2020 gamut
For those of us that have an oled monitor and a 8k display I remain disappointed in the lack of good content that I can consume :/ but I get it I am the edge case in side an edge case
But did you manage to implement a working solution for float plane?
I was hoping you were onto something, but then I realized you're just wrong if when you suggest at 6:00 "it's going to look a little something like this" then you show a left image, and a right image, and the left image looks like an oversaturated, over-contrasted cartoon, while the right image looks much, MUCH more realistic. I am guessing that many people no longer venture out from their mom's basement so they don't know what real things on earth look like.
I do NOT want everything looking like a computer generated cartoon.
Google owns YouTube you are complaining to the wrong company lol i guy in Australia sued google and won about a video on YouTube defamating him.
6:24 am i the only one who doesnt know what a zoomer is? (also, im a teenager and i dont use instagram)
Thank you for bringing this up Linus. I've spent some decent money on a color calibrated 4k HDR monitor and Samsung 4K TV. I rarely find good looking HDR content like movies but when I do they look impressive. I hope YouTube makes it's more straightforward to upload HDR content that can also be played on SDR displays.
So…is there a better alternative? Vimeo?
Who is still watching in sdr??? My Galaxy from 7 years ago had HDR
Yes yes yes, good video!!
Youtube doesn't even support surround sound. At least I haven't managed to play a video in 5.1 or so yet.
Ha! I run android 11 on my 8 year old phone. Where is your god now?
Wanting to control brightness in HDR mode on a phone is nonsensical, HDR is an absolute brightness standard and "lowering the brightness" would just destroy all the detail.
If the brightness of HDR video is too much for your viewing environment, switch to SDR.
Also, I doubt a channel like LTT with very good controlled lighting would benefit that much from HDR, even if YouTube should still make the necessary changes for all creators to benefit.
I've noticed HDR the most in gaming. Forza horizon 5 for instance is the best HDR experience I've had. In movies I could take it or leave it. Kind of like spatial audio (ATMOS) it's hit or miss with movies and incredible with video games, but few games support atoms or games that did don't anymore (battlefield 1 supports Atmos, but BFV and BF2042 don't)
Until YouTube has some real competition they are not going to spend the time and money to improve at all..
Next best thing or a business move would to have floatplane support HDR. A lot budget monitor support some HDR, which is not amazing, but way better than none at all.
Edit: Also, the HDR Channel does have HDR support
I'm shocked that YouTube doesn't allow you to upload a video in both HDR and SDR, as mentioned at the end.
