Microwave sponges IN WATER. Doing as shone will shorten the life of the microwave. Just a small dish with an inch of water for 3-4 mins. This also makes the microwave itself easier to clean afterward–double duty task ftw.
I used to soak in bleach but that destroys them faster. I've found microwaving actually prolongs their life and I do this almost everyday before washing dishes. Dishwasher works too but I no longer have one, and microwave is faster anyway.
Re: "Just throw it out and buy more." No. What a waste of both money and material. I used to toss sponges every week or two because bleach was making them fall apart but now they last well over a month, sometimes two, and they are clean with no smell at all. I HATE smelly sponges/ rags/ towels. I use raggedy old wash cloths for cleaning surfaces with bleach and sponges for dishes.
Wallet, credit cards. These also get filthy, and you frequently hand your cards over to other people to swipe. Surprised this wasn't mentioned either.

No, do not put the sponge directly in the microwave! Put it on plate just in case someone else doesn't know what your doing. They will grab the plate and not the superheated sponge.

Just by new scrubbers thats a dumb idea to put it in the MICROWAVE ITS BETTER TO REPLACE THEM EVER SO OFTEN RINSE IT OUT GOOD IN REALLY HOT WATER…WHEN YOU SANITIZE AND CLEAN HANDELS WITH ALCOHOL instead of lysol i can not stand it.

Cleaning your remotes with alcohol is a great way to ruin them by messing up the plastics and rubbing off the writing on the keys.
Same as microwaving a sponge. It'll dry out as all the water content evaporates then the microwave will keep running with no load which is the same as turning it on while empty. That will cause the magnetron to overheat and in the worst case will lead to arcing between the antenna and waveguide, destroying the oven.

I'm amazed people don't clean their toilets right….it's not that hard x'D That toothpick one can be done differently too and have no worry of snapping toothpick into your buttons…just use a toothbrush, it's safer for a few other reasons too just make sure you don't put it into your mouth later.

My mum uses a dirty sponge to clean the dishes, and then she tells me to use the same one!
Over cleaning can actually help make you sick because you're not exposing yourself to bacteria.
