MSI’s MAG B660M Mortar Max motherboard has a secret chip up its sleeve that people all over the world won’t get access to until after Raptor Lake launches. Is Base Clock Overclocking worth the hassle in modern games and productivity? Why are we locked out of this on non-K CPUs if we want to try it out?

I got my i5 11400F from 2.6ghz to 4.2 completly stable and im sure it can handle more highest temp is 66 degrees
i love BCLK overclocking. i used to have an i5-6500 that i overclocked to 4.5ghz, which was where most i5-6600k CPUs would reach
i7 [email protected] E-Stepping and the XP2500@3200 Barton. And don't forget the ATi Radeon 9500@9700Pro The good old days.
Haha. My first gaming build was a XP2500 that I easily overclocked to XP3200 speeds! It was easy and fun and did save me some cash! Loved my trusty Ti4200 as my GPU as well. PLayed BF1942 like a champ! BTW, it's often fun to go back and look at my Newegg history and watch my rigs and the tech change over the years!
Happen to see this video today and is using the same line up since April. Will probably try this later.
In all fairness, the multiplier overclocking has been a price premium thing for Intel and AMD for a looooong time. AMD was doing it with the Black Edition processors before Intel even had an unlocked multiplier on anything.
But locking out the b-clock? That was just spite after nobody bought the more "Extreme" Core2 chips because a cheap SLACR q6600s would hit 4GHz+ anyway.
back in the day my first i7 was i7 2600k on P8V77V-PRO ready for overclock. I remember I bought the NH-D15 to "extreme" overclock the i7. from base 3.4Ghz to 5.2Ghz with 1.42V. Huge peformance!
My favourite CPU that I owned was E2160. I managed to run it at 2x the rated speed, 3.6GHz from 1.8GHz stock. Could probably go even higher if it wasn't for the stock cooler and FSB limitations on my board. I got it for ~$30 or so.
It wasn't just a little faster after OC, it was in a whole different product category. Came within spitting distance of the fastest dual-core CPUs at the time.

from z170 , base clock DID NOT effect PCIE / SATA freq but only RAM and CPU , MSI employee use oscilloscope to prove it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDuggKg9zIg
U need more volt to not crash
Can I do this on an asus tuf b660 motherboard, or is it exclusive to that msi motherboard? I'm asking because I literally have an i5 12500 lol.
hey linus, will this work on a 12500T ?
I Was messing around with BCLK overclocking about 6 years ago and fried a 10gig network card… so I can verify that BCLK isn't the safest 🙂
Nice video.Got the 12500 too with this board with ddr4 4000mhz. OC works but i notice when i am using my igpu for display it will cause issues with youtube or prime video displaying some video glitching like every few secs. My oc settings 1.25v 4.8ghz 40*120 ddr4 3600 G1.
Overclocking is good for RPCS3.
Wow finally had dub on instead of sub even it was the in the first 20 seconds
"Hey Thaa buddy, Love The T&P Linus! Seems like a real neat guy buddy"
!@#$ that I am done breaking my neck over a couple hun. Fucking crazy world but I'm also invested in stocks and other things so nah, I'm good. When I was in college? Sure, hell yeah, this would have made a big difference perhaps, but back then the GTX1080 didn't even exist so !@#$!@$$!@ this crap I'm going i9k!
Thank god for tech companies, in our modern age of digital abundance they've managed to maintain the status quo of the "haves & have nots" even without having to call their creepy crypto cousins to "create a blockchain" and sustain the unnecessary market value famine which is "necessary" to truly make the affluent assholes at the top feel special.
Great vid Linus, good to see you getting back to your roots of overclocking the small chips. Personally running the 12100f in the ASUS b660g motherboard, bclk at a stable 5.12ghz all core. Its a beast of a chip for the money.
TFW you already have the MSI MAG B660M Mortar but its the non MAX version 😭😭😭
shave linus
Me: sitting on a 4.75 ghz ryzen 5 3600
Linus says multiplier once
Me: 🗿
god bless ur heart
I did something similar on my i7-4790. The asus z97a 5 way tuning chip was the shit. It auto software with a little tweaking was able to exploit the turbo to lock the base at 4.2 and then turbo up to 4.4. . it wasnt much but it made a helluva difference in emulation since mine out the box ran at 3.8 and programs like cemu really wants 4 and up.
I love the South Park reference
