If you put water into the microwave be sure to place something like a pair of chopsticks or any nonmetal object into the water. Microwaves can actually bring water to well above boiling temps without actually causing it to boil. This means when you grab it the movement can cause it to spontaneously boil and pretty much explode 110+ degree water everywhere. This will burn you. The object in the water will act as nucleation points which will allow the water to boil properly.

How I soften butter is that I heat up the largest knife in my house till it’s glowing hot then I hold it over the butter, just 2-3 inches above it and I watch the butter, before it melts I take the hot blade away and dunk it into some water or preferably oil, to cool it down then I go back to the butter to use it, it’s way more effective than you think

I use two small Pyrex storage cups: I put the butter in one cup, water in the other; put both in the microwave for 45 seconds at 30% power. Check softness. Repeat 45-seconds-at-30% if not soft enough, until it is soft enough. The cup of water keeps the butter from heating up too quickly.
