Even though they usually get less views, these more technical videos are fantastic and itch that computer geek in me that wants to know how everything works. Videos that cover these new standards are also nice because it's a great way to get the point across to a wider audience. Please more
1. how likely is it going to be coming to desktop systems?
2. presuming that it is 1 block on laptops and in future does the ram run at speed natively out the box
Sounds like ROMCOM. 🤔
Am I the only one that doesn't care about soldered RAM? I just upgrade at the start instead of down the road. I have 64 GB in my laptop I just bought and know for 5+ years I won't have to worry.
Always the same fight between comparability/upgradability and progress.
No intro in 2022 👌
If it height of SODIMM is an issue why they make a cut on the motherboard and place the connector in there, so when a module is in, would be at the same height of the rest of the motherboard excepting the minuscule amount of the DRAM chips and half the connector at the bottom
stacks two SoDIMMs high look the new standard is 57% thiner XD
I really want sodimm to remain, but be improved. Mostly because it looks like that new medium could take more space, unless one of that new module has the same speed as two high speed sodimm, then I’d take the new upgrade for laptops, since it will also be smaller.
But well…. When a laptop is that thin, it’s a bad idea especially if it’s a gaming laptop that needs more space for good fans and cooling.
Sodimm could most likely be changed so those lanes are shorter and quicker, but who knows if manufacturers will put that effort in.
Laptops are great, but the speed of the ram sometimes is not good. It’s enough for a mobile device, but it could be better.
I’m sure the only, reason why they can’t move it closer, is because of the cooling system taking space and priority.
No thx i prefer SODIMM DDR4 😀😀👍👍
Got my boss to buy it and it's a beast.
Maybe instead of chasing speed, we start optimising the code we have to run on slower equipment, better?
"Elder nerds" 🤣
That was a really good edit to show the path the traces were taking, I enjoyed that
But this form factor does not work with mini pc so dell is going to be the sole producer of this form factor
Simply make a room for sodimm like we have space for hdd back then. And please no more on board ram except for the halves of maximum memory with one slot memory for dual channel capabilities.
Why doesn’t this affect DIMMs?
I’d have thought the trace lengths on an ATX board were longer than on the typical notebook.
laptops only being compatible with single-sided dimms is the dumbest s ever. If you so desperately need to make the laptop thinner, do a pcb cut-out and let the ram sit at the same z-height as the laptop pcb or something. Lowering the z-height of the machine by making the majority of dimms incompatible is just dumb.
How often does anyone stop to think that we have reached and surpassed the speed of the electron in some parts of computing? Wire length can only matter if our computing is as fast as or faster than the speed of an electron through pure gold. That’s mind boggling.
Pretty absolutely sure that they could have come up with a SODIMM socket V2, of which would have been thinner, closer, better. This is almost that, but with caveats that ruin it imo… I don't like it… not close to elegant enough, flexible enough, or good enough.
A cammed laptop…?
i think a good idea would be to have 2-3 standard sizes.
a smaller size for 8-32 gig modules, a size for 64-128 gig modules, and a larger size for 256+gig modules (the gig ranges are just for demonstration, and technically you should be able to get a large 8 gig card)
or have a "regular card" (i.e. one in the product) a larger card ( for when the physical size starts limiting the amount of ram) and a "specialty" one, i.e. longer in one dimention, for applications where the current standard might not be suitable because of space/shape requirements.
with the current one being either the small or medium size.
4:51 it's 57% thinner… of a double layered SO-DIMM. AND it doesn't account for the mounting brackets, meaning it isn't thinner at all…
The new ram standard is ** ** (from Dell)
Well done Dell!
Dude! Ask your boss for a Dell #thumbsup
one thing for sure. no more shady single channel fuckery on gaming laptops to artificially segregate price points
No I wouldn't buy a dell anything new. They have made mediocre products for enthusiasts prices for way too long.
Did I just get called an "Elder Nerd?" 🤣 7:14
I don't find this to be the right standard. The bigger the memory size the bigger the module. It can't be used in another slot and is not interchangeable because of the size difference. About the length of the traces on the PCB you measure the ones leading to the connector but not to chip itself which is more important. While the traces can be shorter to the connector itself then if the module is larger the longer the trace become. Sodimm can be used in PC with the right adapter but this type cannot be used in PC at this moment. The other thing is that on a sodimm module the chips are on both sides that makes the traces equal from the chips to the connectors. And so on.

@8:34 smurt curd eh ?
I have not been interested in the slimmest and lightest laptop for many years now. It is not longer practical for an average user to make it any flimsier or lighter.
I actually just discovered Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place about a year ago and binged the entire series in a few weekends (1:54 …nicely done☺). It really is too bad that it got canceled as it was actually pretty decent show and would have had a hell of a story going into the 2001 season. Had they incorporated that terrorist act that year, there may very well have been Canadien awards out the wazoo for the cast. What a time to end a good show that could have been great.
Alex sounds so calm?
How does everyone have these cool Noctua-Fans?
why do people insist on thin laptops? Cellphones are bad enough, sacrificing strength and battery life but WHY on a laptop would you care how thin it is? You're paying so much more so less performance just so that your hand doesn't have to close so much when you carry it?
sTaBiLiTy waving arms got me to spit out a sip of coffee
I have this as a work laptop. It is heavy, noisy & hot. Gimme a macbook anyday
Proprietary memory module is FAR better than soldered
dell make their stuff is just amazing yet another thing up ,just thing as open mind and goodbye user upgradablitiy
I ordered the color block hoodie, it shipped November 6th, so far on November 22nd, the tracking still only says data received by carrier
I'm wondering if we'll see this tech come to desktops at some point
What about for desktops? While the need for thinner memory isn't a driver there, having [mainly] one standard across the board should help cut costs. A few years ago I was thinking if they just switched over to SO-DIMM for everything, even desktop, (presumably at a DDRx version threshold), it would have made all memory cheaper rather than having to maintain multiple form factors. Same principle could apply to ECC memory.
yet it' s gonna become a standard and god finally they are having them more standared than just the dumb upgrands with large high prices yay I'm so excited and still finally they did it jesus been waiting for it
9:55 "loads of IO", the right side has almost no ports..
