yeah but in the end the games we get are still crappy. what use is raytracing to me if the balance between looks and gameplay mechanics is just bad…

Ray-tracing usability in games is very far away from now. I am just stunned how brainwashed people are into the whole RTX thing. I have to give this one to the Nvidia marketing. They are truly masters of their craft. No kidding. People are willing to blow 1500 – 2500 on a card then turn RTX on and watch the framerate tank, then celebrate when they can get back up by advanced picture blurring aka DLLS/FSR. In other words get the best card which should guarantee NATIVE performance on ultra settings then kill it and blur it then WOW about it in a long video.

That's great and all. But it's fundamentally the same game.
Raytracing will only become the next generation when it's actually being incorporated into the gameplay. Say a shooter in which real-time reflections cast by character models are mandatory to perform. With current consoles, the lack of RT power of the most popular PC GPUs and lack of PC-exklusives anyways, that's not gonna happen anytime very soon. The ever rising prices for GPUs are further fueling this. Even with a 400 bucks GPU you're not going anywhere, whereas ten years ago that could get you a higher end GPU. And by current trends, even the RTX 4050 entry level is going to be 400-500.
And who knows, by the time potent RT hardware is common place, there may be a more efficient technology. Comparing performances with RT enabled and without, even the best cards still take a HUGE performance hit in quite a few games.
At least with optional Raytracing, Nvidia et all can still sell their top product, so…
Regarding Cyberpunk and similar games turn off the screen space reflections and shadows in the Video settings as the game in many cases the game is trying to do both causing both an issue with how accurate they are and a further performance hit.

I would buy a 4000 series for a morrowind raytraced with this thingy new tech…..Portal meh, It's super cool and all but after 3 hours to finish it you are stuck with a bad financial decision.

Ya… Portal RTX is just an attempt at a FOMO campaign to get people to think they need $1200 – $1500 "gaming" cards to enjoy. If pricing was reasonable for either 4080 or 4090 I would be excited but this is just an old game with effects added in a way that locks most other mainstream products out.

I hate that I won't be able to play Portal 2 with RTX right after.
Yeah honestly I agree what we currently have isnt a “go out and buy a 4090” …BUT if you have the funds might as well. We dont live long enough to enjoy pleasures in life (mind you its up to $2k but like i said if you have the funds thats not exactly a difficult amount to spend). If you want the performance just get it. Sure you can wait for the 7900xtx to get about 80% to 90% of the 4090 but even then youll have to wait to buy one at msrp. And honestly if you want the best of the best and can stomach the price just go for it. Im not saying this is a good thing mind you im saying we are too hell bent on how people spend their money. Let people do what they want.

It's not really a Demo. It's a full game. It's Portal. smh. He must have not played it all the way. It doesn't end the way you think.
Wish it looked dingier like the old portal. As far as the textures on the walls. Used to be a bit decrepit and abandoned looking almost. Now it's a bit too shiny and new looking. But looks really cool anyways. Wish it was more faithful to the original art direction.

I can pass on raytracing for now. Only time I'l consider it is when its integral to either gameplay or atmosphere. For examples, atmosfear = most horror games, gameplay = some kinda puzzle game that utilizes casting shadows or something?
