Awesome Tips My Investment is in TROUBLE – HP repairable laptops

Thanks to HP for sponsoring this video! you can learn more about the HP 845 G9 at:

For years, there’s been an unfriendly trend of replacing socketed, swappable components like RAM and SSDs for ones that come soldered to the motherboard. Great for keeping device thickness to a minimum, but not so great for reparability. Let’s see what HP did to buck that trend.

  1. can you add sim after buying laptop?

The last time I bought hp laptop was the one with vista that got super hot you have to put it in the oven to melt the chip back so it would turn on.

  2. Is there an extra mSATA slot?

  3. my old laptop was a HP 650 G1 Probook (i think probook) from around 2014 and you can swap out the battery and ram completely tool-less. im glad that at least some principles still remain

  4. Can you service the motherboard/CPU package? I had a Razer where the MB died and i was just shit out of luck.

Currently have XPS because the framework didn't come out till the month after I bought mine… RIP

How does this compare to Framework?

dude they offer free dos but no linux 😢

As someone who had an old HP that was mindbogglingly stupid to JUST open and clean the coolers, this may be a good sign to reverse my old "never buy hp again" policy.

  5. you save $215 by going with FreeDos ?

  6. Finally, HP stepping up to the game, if others step up as hard as HP did, first Framework will go out of biz, but the message they put out there will have succeeded.
    GJ All around!

  7. Why aren't CPUs upgradable?

  8. Great: Configurator not Available in Europe

  9. 4:14 No they didn't. The document referenced is only stating what is "mandating" in the specification, which has nothing to do with Microsoft. Also who in the world would want to install FreeDOS on their laptop, when there are so many GUI Linux distributions available. I am sure HP could at least supply Ubuntu.

  10. I highly doubt this will also mean we’ll get MXM slot GPUs, and CPU slot laptops again. This might just mean the other things are more easily repairable.

  11. Yay HP

  12. What the hell is that robot voice from 5:55 to 6:02?

  13. I can't seem to find the product on HP's website. Is it yet to be released?

  14. 2000$ is very stiff!!!

  15. 270 dollars for 16 more gigs sounds like too much.. but maybe it's just that I'm used to DDR4 prices and at least you can upgrade it yourself if it's a bad deal (unlike with apple laptops)

  16. sadly, both HP 845 G9 and even Framework are still unavailable yet in my country 🙁

  17. meh, the screen is still using adhesive. screens break, hinges break (like on my hp envy x360) and the screen needs to be removed to replace the hinges.

  18. sad boye it doesn't offer dedicated graphic card

  19. FWIW for those that like more screen real estate. It looks like the 16" diagonal version of this laptop is the HP EliteBook 865 G9 Notebook PC.

  20. Linus, this is not something special compared to what Framework has done. Of course HP business line up, like many other brands such as Lenovo ThinkPad, will offer replacement parts, hardware replacement manuals, and a way to purchase those parts. However, it is not designed to be service-friendly in the first place, at least by looking at how they layout their components inside the laptop.

On the other hand, Framework has made the internal layout to be replaceable by design, with easy instruction on the components, standard screws, and fool-proof mechanism to remove certain components. They even have modular ports, knowing that port limitations is limiting the laptop’s potential but also to be able to replace when your ports become loosen in the future. Framework has made its firmware open source. Ordering components in Framework is closer to shopping in a cloth/bag boutique. On the other hand, shopping for parts in big brands, such as Lenovo ThinkPad, is clicking through many links. People can get lost and not finding the parts they are looking for. Also, you can’t easily swapped HP motherboard to a newer generation processor (eg. 11th to 12th gen) as Framework does.

Bottom line, what HP do for their business line is not something special and still far away from consumer-friendly-DIY-own your hardware kind of approach. No, your investment is not in trouble (because of this particular brand). And you’re promoting HP quite nicely.

  21. Nice
    But not in Poland
My envy x360 is in trash because screen costs more than half of new

  22. That's not sd card that is the sim tray for lte condition lol

  23. 12:47 hold on a second, "for use in russia" think we need to reevaluate the sanctions.

  24. Nice

  25. Whats that yellow thing you have on the table that you constantly keep grabbing and pushing a button..?

  26. According to Louis Rossman you can't get replacement parts.

  27. Yeah I'm holding praise on this one, could just as easy be do this kinda repairability to sink upstarts, cash in on PR wins, then go back to normal after they cleared the field of competitors like framework. Even if products like this are a loss for them.

  28. I just remembered that I also still have a repairable HP laptop laying around, it's from a time when that was "just how things were" 😂 the battery is even attached externally and can be swapped with zero screws getting in the way.
Odd how times have changed, but I'm glad to see that they might be changing back slowly in that regard

  29. i didnt see a replaceable cpu and or gpu chip which would be a milestone in extending a products lifetime.

  30. Thanks LTT, I've made my choice to go with an Elitebook in my hope to move to a more repairable laptop at last!

  31. I have a more cynical take on this. This is intended as HP's Framework killer. Once it crushes the Framework in the marketplace (or so HP hopes), HP will discontinue this model entirely and close their online store. Mission accomplished, planned obsolescence lives on. That said, I hope I'm wrong and HP (and other OEMs) continue the trend.

  32. HP being serviceable and repairable? I never thought I'd see the day.

  33. I'll buy whichever repairable laptop has a touch screen and dedicated graphics.

  34. I personally don't care to repair a laptop after it's 5 or 6 years old. I just buy a new one because computers are usually outdated by then.

  35. With how quickly a company like HP puts new devices on the market, I wonder how long this level of support and availability of spare parts will last. Are all these things still easily available 3 years from now? I'm curious to see!

    Healthy competition breeds innovation.

  36. I repaired HP laptops until a couple months ago (switched to back-end hardware) and ever since G6 the repairs have become a lot easier

  37. Now if HP can just fix their Enterprise site portal. It feels like that site actively hate me. Dell’s site is so much better when I need to order stuff. BTW… HP computers are great.

I had written off HP because of them not having serviceability. Props HP.. props.

  38. HP and Asus laptops are easily the most sent in for high level repairs. Just take a look at the work Northridgefix does. They are shipped to him constantly.
