  1. Can a used laptop work? Or you have to get a PC with that dual network card?

  2. Nearly exactly the same title as network Chuck's from a year ago

  3. Fantastic video!! Now plz do a video comparing OpenWRT vs PFSense/OpenSense!!

  4. After getting really frustrated about ISP router and its wifi I purchased from ebay a old juniper srx firewall with 16x1Gbit ports and a decent refurbished wifi router. It costed me total 100 bucks with the shipping. Set the wifi to AP and all is really nice. Only issue was that at that pricepoint the firewall doesnt have PoE so I need to use separate swich for the cameras. Oh yeah and the another issue I had was that the firewall needed a console cable.

  5. wow I didn't know my router had a WAP

  6. i have dsl now wan what should i do

Your life sucks. Build a better one instead!

  7. I have been working on this already lol

  8. It's kinda sad that Germany gets picked as an example as a expensive country for electricity and these are even the cheaper prices. Next year I need to pay 43.54ct.

Getting rid of an ISP provided router is great but building one is something I won't recommend. In Germany we have mostly DSL and Cable. Fiber is getting more and more but still a rarer sight. They don't usually Splitt modem and router and you can't run them in such a way. My modem/router cable combo from my ISP is bad. The only option was to remove it and get a new combo. Standalone Cable Modems are rare. I found one with current specs back then and it was sold only on one site, that I never heard off. This to me is sketchy af. I only buy these kind of stuff from a site that is well known and are heavily mentioned across the community.

My replacement I've got is a Fritzbox from AVM. It's a good Allrounder. It has a lot of features but the depth of them isn't particularly good. Internet works fine. A few examples what I mean with that. It has a telephone system but as a central you can use in a company, it lacks a lot of features. There a free version of 3cx is way better. It has some filter options for parental functions but a PiHole can do way more. It has a Nas but a real Nas is way better.

It's a good non professional consumer device but for professional consumers or even professional businesses, this might be on the low end. But until I can select from a variety of standalone modems, I would pick this. The reason is that here ISPs throw out a lot of warnings, when you decide to run your own device. They tell if your device is messing up the line, you need to pay. I rather have a device from a well known brand and bought from a well know seller, so just in case, I can go after them, if something comes up.

  9. How do I put my ISP provided modem-router-ap-switch in just modem mode?

  10. Last time I tried OpnSense, it just didn't have everything PFSense had that I really needed… Maybe one day I will take a week off to configure an OpnSense box again. But an i7 of any kind should easily handle multi-gig networking unless you are doing DPI or VPN services.

  11. Does it have Load Balancing for using Multiple ISPs?

  12. I thought he was going to say something else of my dad that's dusty and old…

  13. Does opensense support dual wans in failover mode?

  14. Can LTT have a tutorial on home captive portal, with user authentication (and registration with sms-OTP if possible)? Really interested to impress my guests when they come over :))

  15. I find most of these vids helpful. But this 1 doesn't help at all if you have cable! How do you directly hook up to cable like comcast?

  16. so that's why intel NICs doubled in price on eBay 😒

  17. NanoPi R6S & Orange Pi 5

  18. Informative video. I really like OPNsense, but my preference is Sophos XG. This because I deal with them professionally as well and because I find their interface to be extremely intuitive. They have a free version for home use that is near to full-featured. The XG version has been a bit of a step backwards though, Sophos UTM was a bit better and had more features, but I'm hoping they add the missing ones back in over the years. The main one I'm missing is a plugin to make the firewall act as a VPN client, which is a major shortfall in my opinion. But, most of the other goodies are there, web and app filtering, QoS, IPS (snort), DynDNS, web management, remote access & site-to-site VPN, antivirus (two engines, which you can use at the same time if you want), web & app policies, HTTP/HTTPS filtering with MiTM for HTTPS, proxy, traffic shaping, DNAT/SNAT/MASQ/Port Forward, SMTP protection, DDOS & spoof protection and the main network services like DNS/DHCP/… etc etc. I can truly recommend it, great product and easy to set up. You can run it bare metal or in a VM

  19. expensive tech tip

  20. Very informative

  21. RTL8139 is the best.

  22. Bitdefender is a memory and resource hog. Locked out of a recent purchase after a Windows reinstall because they do not give you a activation key. Even after several bouts with support I gave up and returned to my former antivirus suite. Not a recommended suite/software!!!
