My smart home has some interesting HVAC control systems, but unfortunately, we never got around to setting them up and with temperatures dropping into the negatives… it’s time we finally set them up.

  1. ps. We know that the Ecobees can actually be wired into the zone valves directly, but this setup gives us much greater flexibility with full HomeAssistant control, and the potential for configuring the Ecobees and American Standard thermostats to work together better.

  2. My heating is easy because I can't afford it

While I do appreciate seeing your house as a massive 'smart' home, it makes me think I'll stay as a dumb home for another few years with all the weird issues. I'll keep it at the minimal (smart AC / cameras) – this house seems insanely over-engineered. I can't even imagine how many signals are in your house, lol. Super cool, though.

  3. buy some space heaters geez!

  4. I would like to see a Savant vs Crestron home automation basic setup. If you have time, then an advanced install cost vs budget home automation.

  5. Nexia even annoys us HVAC techs, trust me.

  6. Thermocouples tied to metal faceplates with a PLC would probably go a lot further and cheaper than this setup.

  7. IMO I never ever want a Smart Home. Too much hacking going on. And I don't want someone tampering with my homes environment, through a cloud based system like this. If I went this way, the whole home automation would be on a separate run network OFFLINE. I'm all for building PC's which I love to do. But this SMART TECHNOLOGY, is not the way to go, in a situation like this. As the old saying goes "IF IT'S NOT BROKE, DON"T FIX IT".

  8. Interesting but shouldn't the Ecobees be biometric secured as standard

  9. remember people. always let people who know what they are doing do this kind of work. you dont have the time to figure all this out. you dont have a jake ;p

  10. anything in tech called smart is just the opposite…

  11. Thank you Linus and Jake for showing the path of smart homes.
I knew I lacked (a lot of) money to implement the same kind of features in my house, but now I know I also lack the time and patience. 😅

Oh and Happy New Year LTT team!

  12. omg get some 2-way radios … this yelling is absurd.

  13. 1. Apple Rocks, 2. HomeKit rocks…

  14. FLIR on phone is pretty cool. BV makes them too.

  15. Seems you burn a lot of electricity just to run a heating system. Bet you're not saving any money running all that hardware in the background

  16. That is not a smarthome, that is a ribethome 😅

  17. Were they eating red popsicles or something? Why are their mouths all red?

  18. 20,5 aint so bad… we woked up one morning and kids blame that it was kinda cold inside… yeah it was like 15,4C inside, oil heater system was cutted it shelf down for some reason 😀

  19. Meanwhile I'm here, no thermostat, just turning my radiator on and off by hand and barely managing to get my room over 19°. I also rarely keep it over 18° because money.

  20. I have a degree in this shit and it’s just like every device I’ve ever tried. The only way I’m ever getting a smart home setup is if I make it from scratch myself.

Man I wish I had remembered to send a merch message about non communicating system options sooner. The only one I know of is Maytag but they have an 18 SEER modulating heat pump system that doesn’t have anything communicating about it and you can just use a standard 6 wire thermostats.

  21. Current state of smart home technology: 90% of the features offered are of no real use and in 90% of the features that would be useful are not possible yet. Basically building a smart home means overpaying for some fancy light bulbs and a horrible smartphone app.

  22. You can buy separate temp/occupancy sensors for the ecobee's, and just set it so the each Ecobee uses the separate sensor for the temperature and not the built in one if it's being thrown off by the American Standard thermostats. Or you can let it average between the two sensors if you want. Plus, you get the bonus of having occupancy sensors.

  23. Big Clive used to have a couple of Cat phones, and would promote them a little indirectly.
Nice that you have found out how to direct the MosQuiTTo's to be helpful and not just buzz around.

  24. HomeAssistant is simple to set up. It's around 10 mouse clicks to set up Mosquito… I'm 100% failing to understand why this was more than 10 minutes to do……

  25. "The good news about computers is that they do what you tell them to do. The bad news is that they do what you tell them to do."
    -Ted Nelson

  26. I's always a joy to get the Linus & Jake bug each other hour, but I gotta say Jake killed it hosting this one.

  27. wait for it to get hacked

  28. You know Linus has big money, because his heating is set to double digits! My heating is set to 7 most of the time, then between 12-14 when I turn it on.
Who sets their hearing to anything over 16!!!!

  29. Each to his own. I'll stick with old school. Never fails..
