USB has never been easy to understand, and USB4 is no exception. How compatible is it with Thunderbolt 3? What about Thunderbolt 4? What cables can and can’t be used? Is a USB4 cable interchangeable with a Thunderbolt 4 cable?

  1. I bought one of those asus thunderbolt 4 adapters, and it wasn't compatible with my motherboard.🤦‍♂️

    I don't know why I didn't check before buying.

  2. Intel were getting flash backs of Rambus memory. People don't pay extra for obscure standards, USB already fought off Firewire and now it's absorbing Thunderbolt.

  3. Linus made a segue to his sponsor at the end of the video but it isn't there lol
Maybe Corsair canceled it or something?

    Phones: USB 4 M
    Everythibg else: USB 4
    Never this simple 😭

  4. I'm so sad that I live in Brazil and can't buy that corsair laptop, my god loved it

  5. The big problem is, always has been, and always will be: money.
If you wanna force more features to be included, the price is gonna be higher. Some people don't want that, they just want to download stuff to/from their phones at 40gbps and that's it.
Hell, that's why USB 2.0 100w charging-only cables are still popular: they're cheap.
    I hate cable management.
I can understand why it's a thing, but I really hate it. I hope someday soon we really will have one cable for everything.

  6. Oof. I can even see myself having problems with finding out which version of usbs will be implemented in a device in the future…

  7. So cool that you support the gay community now with your hoodie merch

  8. Will we ever come to a point where you could run power and video in one cable to a monitor? Maybe even further, have multiple monitors daisy chained? USB4 theoretically supports it and it would not only clean up cable clutter but simplify compatibility.

  9. Why are standards not standard?

  10. you should see this USBC "audio only" cable I discovered. instead of sending an actual USB signal, it's two dacs and adcs paired up to each other

  11. Imagine USB eventually taking on and assimilating SATA, Ethernet, and maybe even fiber optic technologies. The truly universal cable.

  12. Just change the colour of the plastic inside the connectors

  13. Goddamn didn’t usbc come out a couple years ago? I want this shit to just not change for like 10 years, I’m sick of buying new shit

Linus for fucks sake please stop hyping 8k displays. They are bad for consumers and literally everyone else that wants a good product and media experience.

  14. Inb4 Thunderbolt 4

  15. Ughhhhhhh…. I work in a small computer shop and this CONTINUES to be the bane of my God damned existence. I have a script I start down when someone calls to ask why the docking station they bought doesn't work with their monitor or charge their laptop…. Because USB-C was supposed to be the "One Port" and instead just exists to make my life a living hell

Nope, absolutely no reason to switch. Sorry!

  16. So SUSB – Semi-Universal Serial Bus?

  17. Anker product

  18. I've been watching LTT for a long time, and I don't even own a computer. Lol

  19. I'm assuming that in USB 4.1 all of those optional features will be required, right?

  20. Riley is very funny at 0.75 speed.

  21. "It allows Apple […] to support features that used to be Thunderbolt exclusive": You hope for the company that used every little trick not to implement USB-C on their devices and impose lightning instead to do that? Really?

  22. optionally universal serial bus

  23. Not again, their naming. Apple should take over USB standards for better names.

    God bless.

  24. In the end, what's it all for when everything becomes obsolete?

  25. This entire lack of compliance runs counter to the entire original point of USB. Ugh. So great theoretical thru-put with zero reliability or assurance that you can achieve it without a ridiculous amount of research and buying new equipment. This is NOT the promise of USB.

  26. Thunderbolt is going to disappear and now it’s going to be USB 4. I guess you already now that 😂

  27. cannot believe youre trying to advertise iCUE as being GOOD lmao

  28. We need to start color code standards for usb cables if they’re making 40 different types of usb-c

  29. I officially hate technology.

  30. Lenovo T14s Gen 3 AMD seems to have a USB4 port. Can one use external graphics cards with this one? Thanks for your response in advance!

  31. Damn ants

  32. Bought a Microsoft Laptop that came with just 2 usb-c. No thunderbolt, no usb-c (a)… just plain usb-c. Its stupid that I need to work with 2 different adaptors and dongles to connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Ofc my monitor cant go past 60hz. At this point im only buying framework laptops that allow us to switch modules for different connector types.

  33. Yeah, about that USB4 support on Ryzen 6000. Asus initially promised USB4 on their Zenbook S13 with Ryzen 7 6800U. They sent bios updates to reviewers and everything to show that it works.
Come launch, they just removed it from all the spec lists and pretend it doesn't exist. What we call in bird culture a, you know.

  34. well – there are non-intel-TB4-cables with 2m, but it is easy to by some onions…

  35. 10:40 😳 Linus used Wikipedia for his reference?😆

  36. why does Linus hold that blue controller thing

  37. I’ve avoided getting much into the thunderbolt/USB-C ecosystem precisely because I don’t know what works with what. I’m not about to spend hundreds of dollars on devices unless I know everything is going to work as intended.

  38. Optional feature support always turns into a mess. Manufacturers inevitably under- or mislabel. At this point I just assume that everything Type-C probably supports nothing but USB 2.0 and 3.0 unless I have a specific reason to believe otherwise.

  39. typical ssd, 500mbps, nvme 5gbps do we really need 40gbps on anything outside of a big storage/rendering server

  40. USB cables standards are a Menace. Due to Hess lack of absolute standardization .
A wrong usb cable ,can really hurt your devices.
In some ways it’s similar to what happens with the 4090 gpu’s do the cable pin bus issue.

  41. They should just abolish USB 4 and start calling this new protocol with ALL the optional features included just USB5.0.

  42. They should keep Thunderbolt as a naming standard when all these features are included. USB4 is a poor name also

  43. Hate USB-C! Intel managers should be in prison for this mess that they have created. it is hard to understand even when you are an IT specialist much less to explain it to an average user. Not to mention that the USB-C cable quality is one big mess.

  44. Man behind 😁😁😁😁

  45. 0:07 the sound effect when the bullet points show up is from Kingdoms of Amalur; The Reckoning and I'm probably one of the only people that know that.

Also, Phones could absolutely use the PCIE tunnelling if someone invented something like an unholy marriage between a phone and a computer that could be docked to an external GPU, lan network adapter, keyboard+mouse and display when you get home.

In the same way people laugh about when we used to carry around a separate PDA, pager, cell phone and game boy, future generations might be just as tickled that we used to have a computer at home, laptop at work AND phone in our pockets. Especially if the chip shortage gets any worse.
