  1. Why do you think this is such a rarity in keyboards? Is it worth it to include, or is it more hassle than it's worth? Is qi charging just a meme fad like flip phones, weighted mice, and blue-colored extreme upgrades?

If you give this project a try, please let us know how it goes and please include some photos of the journey if you can as well! https://linustechtips.com/topic/1487598-every-wireless-keyboard-is-a-liar%E2%80%A6-but-the-fix-costs-2/

And if you need some tools to get into the keyboard, check out the makers of our favorite toolkits and (second) favorite screwdriver, iFixit: https://www.iFixit.com/LTT

  2. Why not embedded the wireless charging coil in to the deskmat? It will shorten the gap between them. Cmiiw

  3. Definitely a moist fart sound during the iFixit intro spot at "stay tuned"

  4. Because all these companies suddenly became aware about how much impact so much transfer loss would have on our climate?

  5. Still rocking my Logitech K750. Also true wireless, because it's solar powered. And no need to break open or solder anything. It works straight out of the box. Will work in the total darkness for up to a month when fully charged. And can also charge from fluorescent light.

  6. Dude the Apple keyboard ! 100!

  7. Companies usually hold back at least one new tech.. This keeps the businessmen happy..
This reserve tech is ready for when a company starts to loose market share, they have the new product ready to go, as a life saver innovation.
if the group of companies in a sector all play along with each other, and don't take too much market share then the product stagnates, you get new shapes and colours but no development, (the new tech becomes old before it is released!)
(and it doesn't matter to the businessmen that everyone else has that too, they just have to have something in reserve ready)

    Capitalism stifles rapid innovation.

  8. Great prove of concept "true" wireless keyboard. But It's more like "glue" caz you can't move it to charge it properly. Btw nice one.

  9. I got a logitech F710 wireless gamepad I just modded a 2100mah polymer battery into (and kept the AA contacts and holders intact :D) with a micro USB port (wish I went USB C) and now I want to add wireless charging LOL! DIY PS5 controller 😛 but I'm a PC gamer (master race)

  10. Why wouldn't they do it? your phone is placed on the charger and is left there, you leave. Keyboard placed on wireless charging coils (even multiple now) and 'could' pose a serious health threat (we know that high powerd EM caues cancer -especially with kids), point being: it 'could', because there is scientific evidence it can with high powerd. We have no to little data with low powered and continuous usage. So is it safe?
Wireless charging produces relative high power EM – but short distance, and some people (like me) are more or less 8 hour a day behind a keyboard. Most wireless chargers exceed the 40uT especially with the newer higher powered ones.
'The ICNIRP reference value for whole body exposure is in the range of 3 to 150 kHz at 6.25 micro Tesla.'
' The measured value was more than 20 micro Tesla (μT) at a distance of five centimeters. For health risk assessment is still required an additional information' (this was a mousepad with wireless charging for the mouse so thats relative low powerd back in 2009)
Source: https://www.baubiologie-regional.de/english/2014/10/15/sitting-magnetic-field/ (not very scientific but I'm not willing to do the research on this topic 🙂
I love tech, but I do believe modern tech has serious drawbacks that are rarely discussed mainstream tech media. Our eyes are not build to focus continuously close proximity (screens/smartphones), the classic we need to move more and too much EM in our lives.
I'll keep the wired keyboard and mouse, thank you.

  11. just add charging coil in the matt or back of table matt and boom . then just place keyboard on matt .

  12. Why exactly do you want to do that in the first place, does it have something to do with gaming? I'm used to just pulling the rechargeable batteries out of my keyboard and topping the charge off once a year.

Okay but now the charging pad needs a wire to it lol.

  13. I simply want a decent wireless keyboard that has some sort of cherry MX switches with a FULL SIZE form factor and backlighting. I really don't care if it has Qi.

  14. Hmmm, I love the DYI aspect here of retro fitting the inductive charging card in the keyboard with a little ingenuity. Very cool and a fun mod with a little soldering and use of a multimeter too, but the careful placement of the keyboard over the charger is a non-starter for me. A bit painful. Clearly things might get better over time with better implementations. What is so difficult about plugging in a USB C cable to just let the keyboard charge? Unplug it and user your wireless keyboard. Most of the newer wireless keyboards have a crazy amount of battery life. I really like the new ROG Azroth because of the snazzy OLED showing you the charge percentage right on the keyboard when the PC is off. And leaving the cable in at 100% charge should not degrade the battery life. I mean seriously there is charging logic in the charging circuit to keep from over charging 3.7v cells once they hit a certain voltage. It's not like we are forcing some old ni-cad battery charge without over charging regulation here. But still, this is cool video and fun project! The inductive keyboard charging solution seems like pushing a thumb tack in with a sledgehammer. I tend to move the keyboard around a bit depending on if I'm gaming etc… who wants to worry about the exact placement of the keyboard. I'm sure it will get better. And on another note, I'm suspect of the RFI those wireless chargers create. 😉

  15. A wireless charging desk mat or even desktop would be insane. I don't see why it wouldn't be super "cost effective" to add it into a motorized standing desk. So you could just add wireless charging all over the desk top and route it to the same power source as the actual desk.

10:05 LTT did what Apple couldn't dare to do, make AirPower

  16. You could use a magnetic ring and make it Magsafe compatible. That way placement is more consistent.

  17. Will this work on a mouse/trackball? I have a Logitech MX Ergo Wireless Trackball and would love to just have to set it on my wireless charger on my desk instead of having that extra cable to recharge it hanging off the side. Would this work?

  18. Linus: wants a wireless life
Also, Linus: uses wires to do the work

What are the dimensions of the monitor, please?

  19. Consider Logitech have wireless keyboard years ago with only AAA battery card and it can be use for years without changing battery. Techs is going backward. Just remove the LED from the keyboard.

  20. No… I do not need this. The battery of the MX mechanical holds multiple weeks

  21. Does anyone remember Star Gate Universe?
The Destiny had "loading plates" all over the star ship. Even dinner tables and cupboards had this feature. You put any electric device on the plate and it to loaded. They did it right.

  22. Alright linus youve got a new ltt store item, the wireless charging desk pad.

  23. My solution to this "problem" is I don't use wireless keyboards or mice. Don't know why Linus is even touching on this subject after soldering wires into wireless thermostat sensors! Wireless has it's uses, but for keyboards and mice it shouldn't even be an option in my opinion.

  24. iFixIt, sponsors smart modding

  25. So the wire will be on the pad? Seems ok. How about the latency? Having a wired option for the keyboard for lower latency would result in more wires than intended.

  26. Logitech could make a huge PowerPlay mat for keyboard and mouse.

  27. How can you say that EVERY wireless keyboard is a liar. I have the Logitech K750 Solar keyboard now for 10 years and I have never had to replace the battery. I know Logitech say you shouldn't because they want you buy another keyboard. I bought a Logitech Solar keyboard and gave it to my partner she didn't use it and put it in her closet. Many years later I got her a new PC and remembered she had the solar keyboard. I charged it up, but the battery had died. So went online and got a new one. Replaced it, and guess what. It been working excellent ever since and that was 3 years ago. And another thing NO CORD.

  28. Wireless charging keyboards are just solutions looking for a problem at this point. Costs more, less convenient, short battery life, why bother? AA battery powered keyboards last months or years. If you have high powered, heavy RGB light mechanical keyboard, it is 99% of the time not going to be moving away from where you initially placed it, so cutting wire from that is a moot point. Perhaps you can build a giant deskpad with tons of wireless charging pads all over the place, but you would still need a wire to power the pad, so it really defeats the purpose.

  29. LTT store can consider to make mousepad with wireless charging function

  30. cyberboard has wireless charging
