Comments

  1. I need a Followup video

  2. 3:46 looks suspiciously like a 36 pin Centronics, originally used for parallel port (IEEE 1284). Not saying it's that protocol, though.

  3. Ubuntu Server is still actively supported and has no licensing fees.

  4. If you don't do a follow-up video turning it into a gaming machine, Ima gonna unsubscribe and downvote you!

… ok, maybe not, but I really want to see it 🙂

  5. wtf is pound & lb where is grams/kg

  6. I just love the way the Hardware looks. Still want to get a Xserve, but do some custom work on the internals.
However? Its just not worth doing anymore. Unless you have some kind of DAW Studio and you like to showcase the gear.

  7. Apple long term support means 4-5 months.

  8. We ran a whole bunch of these for media production with a LOT of Xserve RAID over fibre channel. They were very reliable machines, we purchased a couple of spares kits (apple sold these) and only ever used the drives for swap outs, the rest of the spares eventually were thrown away. Take a look at Final Cut Server which was designed to run on them and was a full digital asset management and workflow system, also if you got that machine boxed, check out the little custom made hex key for locking the drive bays, I still have a couple with their machined and knurled loveliness.

  9. Mad, thats what cloud based systems are. Look, they take all the money , put in in the pockets of the few, then dump the old stuff on others. Because. 1) cheaper than recycle costs. 2) we are all stupid. 3) I get to see Linus review it.( I choose #3) lol..

  10. "This is before they started quarrelling" 🤣🤣😂😂😂

  11. Go get em' Linus…lol…

  12. Honestly I reckon LTT should do a video where they take old tech like the Xserve to a genius bar and see how far they can push this just for the sake of it 😂

  13. 12:12 if you guys did another video and wanted to use the server app I own the license for it and it can be downloaded with my Apple ID if you ever want to try to get it to work to see the functionality of it.

  14. But will it run Doom?

  15. Follow up, PLZ!

  16. Doooo eeeeeet…

  17. Server with graphics card. Perfect for running game bots 😉

  18. Hell yeah make that game

  19. Would love to see a video on making that a gaming machine.

  20. Got one of those screaming beside me right now. Maxed out at 32GB RAM, added a GT1030 because why not and a USB3 PCI card. The last really usable OS X Server version was High Sierra and the highest capacity hard drives you could use internally were 2GB drives. Got three of those. I‘m a little confused by why you ran into problems installing the OS, though. A USB stick with a High SIerra installer isn’t that hard to create (if you still have access ANY Intel-based Mac) and there‘s plenty of those ready to download and flash all over the web.

  21. Let's get real. No one on earth hates black people.

  22. On the bright side, Snow Leopard was the more beautifull version of MacOS X to date, including versions after the name changing to OS X and MacOS, even considering the transparecy from the later ones that looks awsome.

  23. Looking forward to watching Linus delid a Xeon W5590 (msrp $1600) in the name of science 🤣

maybe install a GTX 980 MXM while you’re at it? Pretty sure El Capitan MacOS drivers exist for it

  24. That internal drive actually looks like a drive straight out of an iPod of the era. Looks to be a ZIF CE 1.8" HDD, which was used in a bunch of portable music players. The interface is a pretty standard CE-ATA interface if it's the same one as the ones in an iPod classic. I bet there's some sort of vendor lock on it just like the hard drive bays.

  25. L⭕⭕⭕L "Daddy oh what" as the camera man says "LTT"

  26. 8:21 "Risc architecture is going to change everything. Risc is good."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPrUmViN_5c (Holy cow, I'm old. Remember when LCD screens used to project in your eyes?)

  27. They will never make a followup
