    Steam deck has problems.

    No where near switch like.

  1. So at Best Buy using their credit card online and code Q2FY24SAVE10PL knocks the Asus Ally Z1 Extreme price down to roughly $667 US. So if you dont already have a Steam Deck and dont want to do OS playing around to play other games from Windows apps then this seems like a reasonable way to go. Im not saying one device is better than the other, just saying this seems like a reasonable price point for this device comparatively if you dont already have a Steam Deck.

  2. Will already owned digital xbox games (not streaming or thru gamepass) work or do i need to rebuy all my games again?

  3. Reasons not to get the Rog Ally
    -1080p – why? it's a 7 inch screen
-120hz refresh rate – most games can't hit that on RTX 4090s, so good luck
-Windows 11 – not a great OS for gaming, even though it's the main OS for gaming
-Windows controls – basically a PC only controlled with a controller – not the best plan
-Unlikely to have the OS supported by Rog – meaning that if a game doesn't work, sucks for you.
-Prediction: not sure how willing the community will support the Ally, it's possible, but am not sure.

This is a no buy for me. Steam Deck has the best hardware, software, and support for now.

Remember, bigger and better doesn't always mean it will win in a fight.

  4. Mrwhosetheboss (Arun Maini) convinced me NOT to get the ROG Ally after I saw the battery fully die after 90 minutes yesterday. I also came to realize I prefer Nintendo's way of doing it. I don't have time to do all the tinkering to get the most ideal settings for each game. I want to just pick up and play. No fuss.

I guess this is cool for PC gamers who yearn for more power. Guys who don't mind jumping through a lot of hoops to get the games to play right. I'm 42-years-old. I grew up mostly with consoles and not PCs. Most of my gaming experiences comes from consoles. My favorite handheld is still my modded Vita 2000 model. The perfect size and companion to my phones.

Arun actually convinced me to get a Switch OLED instead over both a Steam Deck and ROG Ally. And I was badmouthing Nintendo all month because my Switch Lite's analog stick would refuse to stay right that I sold it 9 days ago. I hate Nintendo the evil corporation, but not the game developer. Nintendo as a game developer is arguably the GOAT.

I watched ETA's video about the Retroflag GameCube Joy-Cons for $50 on Amazon again yesterday. So much high praises for it. Watched RetroDodo and a few others. That's my solution for the Switch to get rid of stick drift/issues and also no input lag since it's not a wireless Bluetooth controller.

That's the best way playing a Switch. The d-pad looks way better than on the Switch Lite. Way more convenient for 2D fighters. Only issue is it will be bigger and heavier but the build quality seems excellent and that's the best setup to avoid drift and Bluetooth latency. Switch OLED + Retroflag GameCube controller = winner.

I guess I'm sticking to console-style handhelds. I have bad experience with Asus any way especially with battery life. My Asus Transformer tablet with Windows 8 and my Zenfone Go from 7-8 years ago would die within 12-16 hours on standby. These were both bought brand new. I haven't trusted Asus since then. I'd rather trust Valve.

The ROG Ally is already so big and heavy that you're only going to get 90 minutes gameplay from it? You're basically losing the "portability" of it by needing to charge it to a wall just to play AAA games. You might as well play it on your PC and never deal with battery life anxieties. It has the best chip + 120 Hz + 1080p. Of course it should die faster no matter what you do.

I don't believe we are there yet with PC handhelds when it comes to battery life. And Windows is still Windows. Still a resource hog sucking up all your RAM. And most of them outside the Deck and Ally still go for over $1K. ROG Ally seems like a cool device but it seems to be another "flavor of the week". There is still too much inconvenience with it. And that honeymoon phase will wear off like with every new gadget.

I'll be waiting for the Switch's successor which should already be on par to a PS4 once released within 24 months. I'm not the biggest Nintendo fan. Not since Super Nintendo. I don't really care for most of Nintendo's franchises. But the more console-style experience from their handhelds just feels right for my taste. I don't want to keep jumping through hoops just to play a game to kill 15 minutes here and there during my day.

Pick up and play. Don't think about it. Don't tinker it only to squeeze 30 minutes more of battery life. Don't jump through hoops. Don't keep recharging it. Watch that Mrwhosetheboss video from yesterday comparing ROG Ally to a Switch OLED. It really opened up my eyes how the Switch is more right for most people. Hence, the over 100M sold.

  5. I'll just stick with geforce now lol

  6. This is a solid piece of tech, I dislike "touchpads" and like a proper WIN OS on a device. Its sold me on that alone. The fact this thing can run most of my game library w/o issue us a bonus..

  7. Thanks for the video, but what about battery life

  8. CNET should do some actual journalism and report on the shady business practices of ASUS in regards to their mainboards

  9. Design for steam deck still catches my eye more. Asus designs remind me of early 2010s gamer gear.

  10. Ergonomics for this is questionable

  11. When are we going to have a handheld OS? I know that Steam OS is kinda one, but let's be honest, it's more like an optimised Desktop PC OS.

I see potential in having a handheld OS build from the ground up that can run PC games, without all the accumulated bloat meant for a desktop PC.

  12. does it smell as nice as the steam deck

  13. hi, can you play playstation games on Asus ROG Ally?

  14. better spec, being vendor neutral and came with xbox gamepass is a win for me
thank god i didnt get steam deck yet

  15. If the Ally has the ability to access my xbox library, but… for 360 games and do those offline I'm definitely down for the Ally, otherwise any online reliant gaming device is pointless for me… I either don't have a net connection or don't want to run up the data where I'd want to use a portable device…

  16. Idk man I’m sticking with my Steam Deck aside from gaming I like to use my deck as a PC and multimedia device and the track pads make it a lot easier and Valve also has great service and the deck seems like the better investment long term.

  17. My deck still kicks. Waiting on steam deck 2. Steam os is just a game changer for me.

  18. So now everybody is hating on steam deck because of Ally 🤦🏻‍♂️

Now Idk wish one to buy! Shm

  19. Steam deck die

  20. I'm not a gamer and I would've got this if it was an OLED.

  21. 0:10 "not one but two..options"
    ???
There's heaps of other Handheld Gaming Pcs out there some with 7800U variants of comparable performances.
Handheld Gaming PC market is already bigger than just the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally.

799 is cheap in this economy?? What are you making millions in CNET

  22. There are some really key errors in this review. Mentioning a "more flexible operating system" is laughable! Windows is a less flexible operating system that is more supported by PC game developers at this time. I also feel like it is a bit dumb to say that the next logical step was to replace SteamOS with Windows 11. The better logical step would be to improve on compatibility of SteamOS, it is just hands-down a better console-like experience for PC games and I really hope for the day where Windows loses its monopoly on the PC gaming market.

  23. Steam Deck got SteamOS which help a lot for game running on it. The huge install base for Steam Deck and pressure from Valve for developer to optimize their games on Steam deck will also ensure future games to at least run on Steam deck setting

  24. Missing touchpads and missing instant suspend/resume make it kind of a dealbreaker for handheld gaming

  25. You appreciate that you can install AAA gaming companies clients on the Ally much easier than on the Steam Deck… that's not a point for the Ally, that's just bad gaming companies not supporting Linux or having to bloatware a normal pc with their clients. You should call on them being bad and using clients instead of faulting the Steam Deck for using Linux.

  26. Relatively inexpensive….??? How out of touch are you that $700 is considered inexpensive? Especially when you can pick up a Switch Lite for $200 and get amazing experiences there
