Awesome Tips “Starting at” is the Biggest Lie in Tech

Check out MSI’s epic Summer Sale today using the link below!

It’s easy to look at the ‘starting at’ price for a new laptop and think it’s a great deal. But when you look closer, it’s a lie. That entry level config is barely good enough for what you need to do today, let alone tomorrow, and you can’t even upgrade the thing after you buy it!

  1. Small correction: Apple does NOT use NVMe, but they DO use PCIe, and therefore COULD use NVMe, but they would rather use something proprietary. It doesn't change the point of the video (that all of this is about controlling their products and their users) but thought you might want to know. THere's a great post on the forum breaking down some of the… unique choices Apples makes to ensure you can't upgrade your stuff.

  2. Sorry the Subject of the Video can literally be compared to anything. Cars, Gaming, Cameras, Insurance, you name it.

  3. Imho, the philosophy apple is pulling on us is a sign on how stupid apple thinks we are, only to maximize the profit. Besides this approach is very, very, very bad for our environment because Mios of macs and macboobks are getting thrown away, only because one needs a bigger SSD or a few GB more RAM. Not acceptable at all.

  4. I have watched over 100s of tech channels from my language and in English but this guy is on another level of knowledge and research. Keep up the good work Man

  5. I guess car manufacturers came to computer manufacturing 😂

  6. I've had a few laptops, and my MSI is the only one that has a broken hinge. My Dell and Asus laptops are still opening and closing fine, even though they were actually opened and closed more than the MSI.

  7. I neved buy anything higher than the base option from Apple. Maaaybe I upgrade RAM for the machines I actually do proper work on, but the rest? Plenty fast. And storage in iCloud is dirt cheap.

  8. Solution to this: Focussing on new upgradble PCs or buy used ThinkPad's

  9. Rx580 Sapphire nitro ……..

  10. Come on, you don't become a 3 Trillion Dollar company by making things cheaper and easy for your consumers. Sheesh.

😆 I do have an M1 MBP with 16GB and 2TB. Paid through the effin nose. Rip of bastards!!! (I do love the MBP though, grrr)

I got my framework a few days ago, it's so ridiculously nice. I need to connect to an ethernet port tomorrow for work, in like 5 seconds I had my HDMI port swapped for an ethernet port.

  11. as per usual, capitalism is the problem. most research and innovation comes from public institutions anyways like universities etc. democratic socialism is the only way if u don't want to be gauged for profit until the planet melts

  12. I've just given up on laptops these days. Sure the performance has gotten much better, as has battery life; But the keyboards even on high end models are as terrible as they were 5 years ago, and expand-ability and lack of ports has gotten worse. If I want a mobile chip I would just buy a mini-PC or niche machine like a GPD, which are more upgrade-able and have more ports despite the relative smaller size. If I "needed" a laptop for work and I wasn't provided one, I would just get a netbook equivalent, which are cheap and good enough for "office tasks".

  13. We have storage-as-a-subscription-service in iCloud, how long will it be until we get "RAM-as-a-subscription-service"?
    +8GB RAM for only $200/month!

Maybe "Download more ram" is closer than we think..

  14. Watching this on a 512GB SSD Steam Deck, and I'm honestly glad that Valve went with user-replaceable 2230 M.2 (2TB capacity on-market around $350-400 AUD), MicroSD (1TB capacity on-market around $200 AUD), thumbsticks, trackpads, face buttons/d-pad… even the battery and screen can be replaced if one needs to, at the cost of the SoC being limited to 16GB LPDDR5 (of which about 1.5GB is set aside in software or firmware for the graphics processing).
Given a while I would not be surprised if someone has found a way to replace the SoC Valve uses in the Steam Deck with the Z1/Extreme SoC that the ASUS ROG Ally uses to increase the performance of the system (being an upgrade from Zen2/RDNA to Zen4/RDNA3), or even replace the RAM chips on the SoC.

And all it cost me to get my hands on this? About $1200 AUD (account for exchange rates, importing costs and profit margin) from Kogan (import-reseller), as Valve doesn't sell hardware direct to Australians.
(Meanwhile the ROG Ally is selling around $1300 AUD at JB Hi-Fi after conversion ($700 USD), import fees and profit mark up.)

  15. Two ironies in this video: 1) the fact that MSI is the sponsor, and 2) showing NVIDIA when talking about companies that know what a good amount of memory is for a particular GPU.

  16. I work for a big company like hp, dell, lenovo, etc. and i see this DAILY. In the enterprise world it's largely not a big deal but consumers get hit hard by non-ungradeable hardware. "I just want a bigger ssd for my pictures and videos" – well, that'll be 200 bucks + service technician (because many people can't install their own components). I always make it a point to tell people (in a subtle way) that they can buy their own ssd and get a friend, neighbor or even local repair shop to install it. But most don't go for it because they're afraid of voiding their warranty and/or support agreement.

It's also always such a shame when we have to replace an entire motherboard just for one bad ram. Can't crosstest anymore, either. If something is no POST – just replace the whole thing. And then we run into part shortages. It's frustrating for EVERYONE.

  17. This is the reason I love my 5 years old Dell(sad they started doing it too). I know it cant compare to the new XPS and M1/M2, but for my purposes I upgraded it with 8gb ram and second SSD super easily for 80 euro. When I buy a laptop the only thing that is interesting for me is free slots for RAM and extra SSD

  18. What annoys me is how the rest of the industry seems to copy apples ideas.

  19. You're saying Apple is using much faster RAM than any DDR5 Sodimm, then right after that you're saying they're putting a 300% markup based on prices of said sticks. Not trying to say the markup is justified, but it is contradictory to directly compare them to the less-performant alternative you just mentioned being worse.

  20. There is a very simple way to avoid these problems, save money and maintain better productivity – not to buy apple products.

  21. Thanks ❤ “Starting at” sucks! @apple

  22. Linus: Have you ever noticed the start at configuration is unusable.

Apple: Have you tried not being broke?

  23. I hope the must change this from the law in the future.
