pros an cons while you will lose up to 10% ram performace you get virtually no random game crashes if you use steam on linux. Wine/Proton absolutely loves ECC. If you use more than 64g ram on most games you aont notice the difference but you will notice the lack of crashes.

8:32 DDR5 doesn't have the ECC functionality talked about here in the standard. Its on the module level so memory makers can be sure the high densities are more reliable/'be less worried about using slightly worse memory chips'. Not baking the reporting ECC functionality in the standard makes talking about the standards more confusing.

Thanks for discussing ECC on your channel. ECC seems to be getting less press, and micro-center stopped carrying ECC ram, so create another video in the future for DDR5 when DDR5 is a bit more mature.
I want to correct or clarify one thing in your stated in your video. The problem with the ECC in consumer DDR5 is that it only prevents bit flips within the module to make the high densities possible. But it does not perform ECC across the CPU-memory bus (front-side) where errors can still occur — which is very disappointing. So there will still be a market segmentation into ECC and non-ECC DDR5 RAM unfortunately.
I also agree with Linus. I refuse to buy Intel CPU's my system builds for others simply over this. I would not blame Intel for refusing to support that feature as AMD does, but to make it completely unavailable is blatant disregard for its customers. The simplest way to protest it to refusing to purchase AMD chips and motherboards that do not support the feature. Buying a more expensive Intel CPU just to obtain the future will only encourage Intel to keep doing this.

Hi Linus , please help[ me out: I have a build with the same model MB: Asus Prime B550M-A Wi-fi + CPU AMD 5950x + 128 ECC dd4 RAM and PC is not starting with this ECC memory. Are there any setting to be made in order to boot with this memory?
I am a bit confused, Torvalds was never talking about ECC memory in that conference, neither was he talking about AMD, or really intel, or RAM in general. He was talking about discrete graphics card support from NVIDIA for Linux systems. completely off the mark. wtf?

Previously FB-DIMM ECC in MAC pro on Xeon CPU provide some explainable stability and performance. I can't explain it.
i have cl14 3200mhz dimms that ive clocked to 3866 with cl14 (b die samsung). huge boost in performance on ryzen – took me a good three days to get it stable tho :/. im working on a plex server now, atom or ryzen pro, or xeon… going UDIMM ECC or registered ECC with a micro board? so many choices and so hard to find good info on the googlefu
Where would you say is the best resource center to learn more about the required equipment to run ECC RAM? I had some bit flips in my research so I think about upgrading to ECC.
