  1. This video was a beast! I worked on it for months, so I really hope it helps. Check out Home Assistant Green here: https://amzn.to/3XUuMNA

  2. The voice commanding a script is accessible via Google or Alexa? Just wondering, have no experience.
But thank you for sharing this extended video. It pulled me over the line to go into HA. I will buy one and start myself.

  3. There's a shortcut for adding Zigbee and Z_Wave devices. Once the integrations are set up, you can just click "Add Integration" from the main Integrations page and there will be options to add devices right at the top of the list. No need to go into the Zigbee/Z-Wave Integration first.

  4. Love the reference to Paul. Touches like this and the outros are why I love your videos. I would be interested in a video on how you set up your notification scripts. Having had to switch a couple of. Mobile devices this year, a video on how to set that up would have saved me a lot of work. Great video, learned a couple of little tricks today.

  5. We don't need no stinkin' badges.

  6. I have done some really cool stuff with home assistant like make my house with a map and then have a bunch of sensor so it knows each room that I'm in and where I'm at

  7. This is such crazy timing because I literally was looking for this type of video today when looking for Ring sensor alternatives!

  8. With the ZBT-1 out of stock everywhere, do you have a recommendation of another dongle that supports Thread?

  9. Talk about good timing. I just installed HA earlier this week and was thinking it would be great to have a nice setup video with recommendations.
    Thanks for doing this!

  10. This is a fantastic video, Reed. I've been using home assistant for a while, but I still learned a couple of new things that I wasn't aware of. Loved the part with Aly at the end lol! Thanks!

  11. I know you have and will be hearing this but I’ve been looking for this solution to all the disjointed automation ecosystem and compatibility challenges. I will absolutely order a HA Green tonight. Thanks so much Reed for the due diligence.

  12. Why do you like this instead of Home Bridge?

  13. I bought the green when it came…. Unpacked it started It… start to cry and then locket it in the basement with holy water around it throw away the key….
So thank you for the time it took you to make this video, now I will try to start this project.🎉

  14. How do you keep it secure from hacking because it’s so open source

  15. What a great video! I love Homekit but this really has me thinking about trying HA!

  16. it’s cool Reed, I guess i need to watch it again after automation. Definitely need more time to developed this. Love it!!

  17. If you are not in the financial market space right now, you are making a huge mistake. I understand that it could be due to ignorance, but if you want to make your money work for you..prevent inflation.

  18. OK…This is why I stay with Hubitat. I am ok with their dashboard. But Hubitat is much more intuitive.

  19. THANK. YOU. SO. MUCH!

  20. will there be a video from home assistant yellow guide?

  21. This must have been a lot of work to put together.

Fantastically comprehensive video for anyone starting out. I think you covered pretty much all the basics and a bit more.

As an "old timer" now, it actually made me realise how far things have come for newbies in the last few years and how simple it is to get started now.

I will be passing this onto a number of people as it will save me having to explain all this to them. 🤣

Great job. Even though I don't need instruction, it's wonderful to point others to.

    ,👍

  22. How this is different from Google Home

  23. My mistake was thinking the Linknlink isg gateway has the same HA

  24. Nice job, Reed!

  25. So I have considered taking the HA step for a while. My question is what makes more sense to start. Buy a HA product like the Green or use a computer/raspberry pi?

  26. What are the odds that I installed HA in a Docker Container last night just to mess around, and Reed puts out a beginner's guide to HA the next day? Get out of my head, sir! Great video!

  27. Loved that segment at the end with the wife advertising home assistant 😂😂

  28. WOW, now if only home assistant had voice control.

  29. Thanks for the demo and info, this is great, now I can take my HASS setup to the next level.

  30. Major thank you for this and also for the eventual advanced video!!

  31. I watch your videos whenever i can.
A special request: can you do a video on the Apollo MSR-2 Presence sensors? Tnanks. I seem to have problems when i install this device, especially when i try to ionstall more than one.

  32. I can tell before I start watching this video it is going to cost me money… LOL….

  33. Thanks!

  34. In all the years of seeing videos mention home assistant, this is the first one that made me actually consider using it.

  35. Great video, please keep going with the tutorials…. especially dashboards! Thanks (a n00b)

  36. how do you change the network on home assistant, I'm running mine in virtual box and i don't know how to change the WIFI network to get my server back up and running.

  37. Now all they need is a button to clear the log book

  38. When a device is renamed, that's the ideal time to update the area too as it's all on the same page. With devices that move between rooms, you probably wouldn't use an area, but generally a light globe, or a hardwired socket, or a hard wired fan, would not move, and this is where areas work well. I leave the area blank for mobile devices that move between different rooms.
I have a Home Assistant Yellow. I got it before the Green was released. I got the PoE kit, so I also got a CM4 with Bluetooth and WiFi to add BLE/BT to Home Assistant. I additionally added 2 other radios, as the Yellow has the SiLabs radio built in with Zigbee firmware by default. One radio I added was the Zwave Me Razberry 7, which plugs straight onto the header on the HA Yellow. I also added a SkyConnect with Thread firmware. This gave me all the radios for Home Assistant. Zwave, Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth, WiFi. I use a combination of devices, so this was ideal for my use case, but this is the great thing with Home Assistant. You dont have to add all this if you don't want to. You can add as much or as little as you want.
Scenes have had a lot of love recently, and you can do a lot of things with them, like climate control and covers. Scripts are more powerful though and you can add a lot more fuctionality with them, but they are easier to break because of this also. I have a night time script that does a lot of different things, with some delays between actions, but for something like "movie time", I have a scene that changes the lights, blinds, HVAC and Windows to make a comfortable watching environment.
It's funny really. With the "home/away" back in the early days of Home Assistant there use to be a default "all devices" group but this was removed a couple of years ago, so now you have to create it for yourself. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to have a more defined home/away mode or a default all devices group back again.

  39. This video helped me setup a slick new dashboard for my existing HA! I was wondering how my friends were doing that.

And I laughed hard at the ad in the back of the video! Great sense of humor!

  40. Is Matter & Thread included or do I have to get a dongle for it?

  41. Great video.. Much appreciated as I am looking to get back into it after months off doing other things. But are we all just going to gloss over the fact that HA found your BIG ASS FANS?!?!? I just hit 56 yo last month and I'm still chuckling over that one! Adulting.. who has time for that…

  42. Really hope this is the video for me. Seen a few beginner videos and still felt lost. Will watch this tomorrow (and hopefully feel like I can get started on HA.)

  43. my favorite part of these videos are the comedic outros

@Reed, is everything you have running off the HA Green?
I read at some point over time, we can outgrow these devices with memory/drive issues.

I was considering getting a synology nas and use a VM to host HA, but i will not have as many automations going as you, so if HA Green can handle your setup then im feeling confident about it handling mine.

I am probably looking at Black Friday to pick up a device NAS or something like Green to handle it and use Xmas break to set it up.
Look forward to your advanced videos, thank you for your content and service!
