  1. Linus, this is a hard sell, DSM OS is free, and does everything you have showcased, and much more, They have been offering everything you mentioned since before there was a spotify or netflix. I set up my hyper cluster like 20 years ago, just needed to pay for hardware which I think was about 2000 including 12 disks. of which 2 have needed to be replaced so far. all the software and os has been free ever since, all the upgrades, free, I now have btrfs MFA, IDS/IPS, for protection, if my building goes on fire, im safe, if my both my Nas's get destroyed, backups safe. evey family member has their own storage where they backup their phones, laptops computers, and all their private stuff for free. they can stream audio video, for free. the list goes on and on and on, Why would I ever change from DSM to Hex os? you have a subscription, DSM requires a once off payment for some hardware and disks.

  2. Linus bought Cities Skylines? 😅

  3. Why would you pay for 10 different subscriptions when you sail on high seas of freedom

  4. Nah

  5. Three. Hundred. Dollars.

    No.

  6. Bought lifetime 2 days ago.

  7. I just bought two lifetime licenses, as a show of support. It being TrueNAS Scale under the hood was the kicker for me.

I'm currently running a TrueNAS Scale setup, but I would like a more user friendly way of regular monitoring/maintenance. That said, I won't be running any Beta stuff, as I'm too busy for that kind of thing: I'll just wait for the first 1.0 or later release.

    Good luck to Team HexOS!

  8. 300 $ for the os while the machine cost 50/200 $ ?
    That is ridiculous

  9. so he invested, then made a video about it made even more money and slaps some sponsors to get paid on top of that lmfao he drives a porche and we dont. (most of us)

  10. Hard pass from me in a world where Unraid exists. Unraid is cheaper, just as easy, and lifetime without any subscription. The sole thing I see that HexOS has is buddy backup, but a little tinkering with WireGuard and Restic/Borg can add that to Unraid. $299 is absolute insanity. I’d pay maybe $49 for a lifetime license to what is just a TrueNAS frontend.

  11. I find it somewhat insane that you're promoting this when this is the Same as video game companies saying buy this now and we'll patch it till it's right later and oh if you don't buy it now you're just buy it at a higher price later When in reality for most users that would really be looking at this in this two day window would be people who already have a TrueNAS setup going that would want The ability to direct upgrade their current to HexOS But if I wait for that feature Is TBD until they finish it
I'm now missing out on the deal that is actually reasonably priced It's somewhat insane that you're saying look you can run this on a $69 hardware but the software is going to be four times the price almost before you even get to hard drives which is just a reskin of a free software

  12. A beginner is not going to spend 300 USD on a licence for a server operating system, they're just going to buy some big brand NAS that works out of the box. And an experienced user is going to build their own NAS and install something like TrueNAS or build their own setup from scratch using something like FreeBSD or Ubuntu.

    Who's this really for?

  13. The one glaring problem being for the $200-$300 price tag any normal person would rather spend that money on hardware and just use their noggin figuring out other solutions. This product is specifically for the "too rich to care but acts like they're into tech" person Linus has become.

  14. Me thinking it was Cities: Skylines 2 😢

  15. Really! Does anyone uses odoo? for anything at all?

  16. What do you mean by "tech dad environment"?

  17. If you change your boot order, you're going to have to go back into BIOS/UEFI when done so that if you have a USB drive plugged in later on it won't hang up your system. I would just google "boot menu key for <Your PC Manufacturer>" and you won't have to jump though menu's until you find boot order under a menu tree that makes so sense to even seasoned I.T. guys lol.

  18. for $300 i'll just get a windows license

  19. I really like a more simply os, for us that is not jake! But 300 !? Have anyone being trying Xpenology i have an really old synology 2 bay nas it was super slow, but i loved the os Xpenology same os but on real hardware, and before you say anything is know its kinda no allowed? But i do own a synology nas that i cant use curse its to slow, so its kinda like ripping your own dvd movies….

  20. I really struggle to understand how this makes it easier than just doing a port forward, installing Ubuntu on my server, have ChatGPT write a docker compose, connect my domain to my IP address, and then hitting `docker compose up – d`.

You literally only need to ask ChatGPT how any of this works. It's really not that complicated.
I don't really underatand who would be the target audience for such a product.

  21. Really cool stuff but for me this would not only have to be better than Unraid but also better than staying on Unraid and not having to migrate. Let's see where this is feature wise in a few years.

  22. Waw it's like YunoHost but crazy expensive for a nice UI. I'll pass.

  23. Will HexOs allow for mix-mode HHD sizes and upgrades like Synology's SHR?

  24. soo just for windows? Meh, pass.

  25. Thank you, Linus

  26. They should work with Twingate. Its a normal VPN but incredibly secure. I use it with HomeAssistant so I can access my server from anywhere. Free too.
