We all know how hard it is for Valve to count to three, so its no surprise that SteamOS 3 is still only available for the Steam Deck. But Linus is impatient. Is SteamOS 3 ‘ready enough’ for him?

  1. A couple corrections, thanks to those that pointed them out! – JB

    1) Linus incorrectly describes how the immutable OS works. System files reset on update, not on every reboot.
    2) Printing support, in the form of CUPS was added to SteamOS in recent months, though the service is not running by default, so clicking on 'Manage Printers' will launch a web browser and say that there's a problem loading the page. In order to turn ON printer support you need to start the service – check out this post on reddit for more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1fs8y6m/big_thanks_to_valve_for_adding_cups_for_printing/

  2. Windows is just a big spy/malware operation at this point. Let’s pray for Gabe’s success, the world needs him.

  3. 🙂

  4. I’m using steam os on my pc for months and windows is now dead for me

  5. Linux gaming isn’t tricky. To be honest, it’s quite straightforward.

  6. If Linux gaming is difficult for Linus, he's a tech posing grifter.

It isn't rocket surgery. It is really easy to setup, even on Ubuntu which tends to be one of the harder distros to do it on with their half-ass support of Linux 32bit libraries.

  7. Or just disregard SteamOS and install Nobara. Great for gaming and easy to install.

  8. What about pdf-editors, or powerpoints, or word docs???

Can I view them? Can I edit them locally, outside of a browser?

  9. SteamOS being immutable doesn't matter because they ship with podman and distrobox, which unlocks everything without breaking immutability.

  10. if i can browse the web, and be reasonablely assured any game and hardware will work, i'll drop windows n a heart beat.

  11. Fedora KDE is pretty good

  12. An ad from amazon? Ew.

  13. For me, I installed Manjaro Plasma, (could be Endeavour, any Arch based distro), Steam came pre-installed with Manjaro. Then installed Steam OS Compositor Plus, now I can login to a Steam only experience, great on the TV like a console.

  14. Who still uses printers

  15. It didn't even cross my mind to install steam OS on my Computer, I knew valve is making SteamOS working on other handhelds , but I didn't even think about desktop PC's.

Now I'm excited for SteamOS, I own a steam deck, so I didn't really care for SteamOS working on other handhelds, now I want that!

  16. I love steam os on my steam deck. Unfortunately though as someone who is involved in competitive counter-strike, I can tell you not having anti cheat support is going to be a non starter for millions of players out there, which is such a shame, because I really have had a great experience with my steam deck. Think it should be valves top priority to find a way to make anticheats work, or even help ac developers develop standalone linux versions, otherewise you’re going to see alot of players never consider linux

  17. I want to see a return of the beard 😀

  18. I currently right now mainline a steamdeck oled as my primary computer. I can use 3 monitors if I want (generally 2 tho) and it can run rocket Leauge 1080p low at 120 fps on the main monitor.

I also use it for all of my university classes, hw and general desk top computer use.

It's not perfect but is good enough for me.

  19. 14:37 to editor: deleting whole system except of *

  20. Get Steam to work on Debian based Linux.
    Sudo apt install Steam
    Login
Then turn on game compatibility mode in Steam settings
    Download game
    Play game

Surely that's not too hard for people lol
I've built two Linux gaming machines this week, it's fairly quick and easy. Though I'm using Flatpack Steam to see how it goes.

I've been playing Hitman and watching movies on them all week.

A dual shock PS4 controller is my favourite to use, acts as a touchpad mouse and controller all in one, much recommend.

For some games you do have to turn on steam controller compatibility mode, as PS4 controllers aren't always supported by all Xbox/PC games. This allows the PS4 controller to be seen as an Xbox controller easily.

  21. The immutable OS part is a shame. Hope it will be more open in their later releases.
There is a lot of software, small stuff, I install for all kinds of QoL improvements.
Not being able to do that would be a deal breaker for me. But let's wait and see.

  22. Its almost like developers suddenly get paid to develop linux.. oh wait

  23. A better video: 'Linux Gaming with Bazzite: My Journey from Windows After 20 Years' by Gage Gaming

  24. Im waiting, full of anticipation. Just like Linus said, needs an easy install (and a step for choosing a drive/partition is critical) and i need to run games like BDO (non steam) which is known for having some trouble with linux.

  25. Amazon Luna 😂😂 Now that was an unexpected sponsor. Totally forgot about them

  26. 2025 will be the year of linux desktop lol

  27. A lot comments here are saying some variation of "duh, just use "distro x" it's much better!" while completely missing the point that "Joey Mainstream" does not give a flying huyuck about distros, he does not want to read conflicting top 20 lists of best gaming distros or spend time on reddit debating the merits of different distros. He just wants to install the gaming os that he heard is better than Windows. Probably without even knowing or caring it's Linux.
For SteamOS to have any chance of success on desktops, Joey needs to be convinced it's better than Windows.

  28. No, no printer support. Printers are annoying and we live in digital age. When i open a document it opens and i can read it and close it. But print a document. You have restart printer, then it wants ink and then it hams. And eventully you have you paper. Save tome and trees. kick the printer.
