Video Games have changed. We all have TONS of core memories of gaming as a kid: taking turns at a desktop with a friend, saving up the budget and buying a game with my own money – or pulling an all-nighter to unlock that last secret character …but can I TRUST my memories? Were games really better when I was coming up, or do kids today have it better- even with all their loot boxes, giant downloads, and horse armour? Are console and PC games the same? We’re putting nostalgia to the ultimate test and bringing in some fresh eyes to help me shatter my rose colored glasses: 8 young people will be playing some of the games that shaped Linus into the Gamer you see standing before you today.

My dude , I love linginuns … But the more I see of this video I feel like him being 50 years old commenting on dis.
Is that Robin from HIMYM?
linus needs to try a full play-through of a modern masterpiece cuz yeah i learned the hard way that nostalgia isnt an accurate representation of quality.
I distinctly remember playing civ 1 as a boy and getting lost in the interface during the 90s.
How low effort content do you want? Linus: Yes
The warcraft movie was fucking great, it gets way too much hate. It had some odd choices sure, but it's a great fantasy movie
0:31 mfw Overwatch gets dragged around for lootboxes again even when people were literally asked for them and you can literally not spend money on them now :icant:
The Warcraft 3 segment shows RTS is too complex for youngsters today, they're intimidated by it. I wish they did a building mission too.
Also hello, where's the arguably most influential game of all time, DOOM?!
LTT React is always fun
The first PC game I remember impacting me was Larry. I played it on a green phosphor monitor. I still remember some of the hilarious lines of dialogue.
But the first one I really remember as the best of the best, which I bought right at the same time as an (expensive) next-gen PC (I was saving up for a year) was DUNE 2. You should have let them play that one :). This style of game was the beginning of countless subsequent games (including Warcraft III). I think I still have the 4 3.5-inch floppy disks somewhere.
I played warcaft 3 frozen throne for over three years! i dont mean on/off between sleeping, eating and drinking over 3 years. I mean, I played equal to 1095 non-stop days over 7 years adding up to thoes three years full. This consisted of games of online maps that included: (but not limited too) footman wars, tides of blood (thee first top down hero arena), dbz tribute (my personal favourit), pokemon wars, DOTA, angel arena, winter manual wars, hero line wars, naruto v bleach, line tower wars, custom hero arena. I can go on and on and on, I played over 300 maps.
I was a master at many of them (The best at dbz tribute) I was actually noted to be thee best with two other people and started a litteral 34 day feud with them both creating an ongoing leaderboard of dbz tribute games, we would win against each other over and over, each game lasting 2-3 hours, we would finish one game and just start another with 9-10 other random people arguing with each other over how we will win, 2 of us would be evil charecters and would solo against everyone (its how you would win in team matches). I was best at power levling cell and body stealing with baby, early stealing future trunks for OP powering up or breaking piccolo/gohan.
god i wish i can replay all thoes games again, if i could lose a leg to do it all again, i would in a heartbeat. btw i was 8 at the time.
omg seeing Road Rash brings back memories. wonder what they would say to the point-n-click DOS masterpieces like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle & Simon the Sorcerer.
Im very fortunate i grew up in the 90's . Its a different feeling when you play back then compared to now and i feel linus pain watching the younger generation comments on the game 😅
linus js tryna further prove how old he is
26:13 as a Portuguese guy playing all my chilhood games in English and had to find out what to do in games, I realize that kids today will never have that struggle.
I used to play civilization.
However before that on dos
– commander keen
– raptor (top down scroller)
– Jane's atf
Windows
-Sim farm
-doom
-civilization
– Diablo ii (without internet or the expansion)
Even up to 2017 (when I graduated highschool) me and my mates used to have full 8-12 player lan parties of Warcraft 3 and DoW Soulstorm during exam block, such fun games.
You shouldve included the Diablo2 Demo from 2002 😀 Or the original Command and Conquers.
Oh better yet, start with "Mario is missing" For PC 1993 educational game, that really fucked me up as a 6 year old HAHAHA. Also we have a severe lack of nintendo64 games in this series, please make a part 2!!!!!
Where the hell is need for speed!!!!!! 😀
Or 1997 Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m 21 and I grew up playing road rash.
the fighter game 9/10
TIE Fighter was my favourite back then too. I played Road Rash on the AMIGA! On my list The Settlers, Dune 2 and Warcraft 2 would miss here, maybe also Syndicate or Descent. By the way there is an amazing TIE Fighter Remake Based on the X-Wing Alliance engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEVrdwZ9bEk&t=22s
I mean Blizzard cinematic team never misses when it comes to Warcraft
I loved RoadRash it was such a brilliant game to play
I think I would actually like the dino park tycoon game!
Good memories.
I do remember a few of those.
Surprised Elite wasn't on your list.
Loved that & Frontier, The Hobbit & Civ, plus a few others, took up most of my time between trying to learn to program, school life & going out with mates.
Compared to today's games they may seem basic & had a learning curve before you could really get your teeth into them, but I loved the challenge.
Wonder if LTT will show more of the oldies but goodies.
Good memories!
DAY 10!!! (i died on the way) PLEASE NEW COMPENSATOR
Zoe gets a raise for being cool with our games! Sorry Elijah you get a downgrade after this, start scrubbing the toilets xD
yes is do know rigs of the nasions wery cool game
my take on documentation: they existed perhaps because of the bad interface, unintuitive to use at the first time, and really bad on telling people in the onboarding department of using a digital product
Watching this, and having also grown up in the 90s and also growing up as a PC gamer, I realise that Linus and I played fastly different games growing up. Perhaps because he's a few years older than me, but apart from warcraft 3 (which imo was actually a "newer" game when I think about what I played growing up), I haven't played any of the others in this video. For me growing up was playing pokemon red, blue & yellow on an emulator, roller coaster tycoon (first game I bought with my own money), GTA 1 and 2, starcraft 1, doom, halflife 1, carmegeddon, among others. And when gaming with friends we'd play unreal tournament, quake 3, cs 1.6, starcraft and diablo 2. Those were good times. The first time I had to spend a large amount of my own money to upgrade my computer just to be able to play a game I bought it would have to be for GTA 4. I remember that I couldn't play it, upgraded my GPU, then the new GPU was not compatible with my motherboard and CPU. I had to borrow money from my parents to upgrade the rest of my hardware and pay it back over the rest of the year.
Another massive part of growing up with PC gaming was that most of the stuff I played was either pirated or borrowed from friends. We all had that one friend who had internet at his house and his dad would download games for him, then he'd get you a pirated copy of a game you want if you bought him something from the school tuckshop. I also fondly remember the running around a LAN party with a single CD, once the game has launched you'd eject the CD and hand it to your buddy letting them launch their game. I miss the days when DRM was basically a few numbers on a box and not something that requires root access to your system and literally ruins the performance of some games.
ruad ruase is a game i play wery fun game
Man, some of those games with my childhood. This makes me feel old and I share what linus said if you're bad at a game, doesn't make the game bad.
Warcraft 3 was treated dirty I really liked the game despite it almost as old as me but now that my childhood games are near it’s age I feel your pain Linus
i liked the video just so Elijah can cheat!!
Is it weird if I still remember the cheat codes for Road Rash?
I played SO much reign of chaos and frozen throne growing up, I'm 24 now
Basshunter Dota
You let the young'uns play Dinopark Tycoon and you didn't invite Sarah???
Road rash was amazing man. Made me wanna be a rider. Only punched a wing mirror off once but 👀
I would have expected more from those 2 time traveling kids from the 80's
It would be interesting to see this crew react to console games from this time seeing them react to SNES ps1 and ps2 would be interesting after seeing their reaction to pc games from that time
For all I adored TIE Fighter, nothing in my childhood made me happier than playing Road Rash II and getting the chain weapon and just wasting fools. God that game was good.
I want to see another vid like this where Linus gives Elijah a ZX Spectrum and challenges him to (a) figure out how to load a game and (b) complete Dizzy.
