With DDR5 prices spiking to infinity and beyond, we re-examined if it’s worth buying in 2026 or if you’re better off saving some money and buying into a dead platform. Intel’s 12700K and AMD’s 5800XT are both very reasonably priced, but just how good or bad is the price to performance ratio?

Comments

  1. Hey everyone, the parts listed earlier in the video are the ones from the PC PartPicker list, not what we had in stock. It lists Asus GPUs and different motherboards when you can see us using Asrock GPUs and MSI motherboards. I sincerely apologize but I invited you to the comments section so please feel free to tear me apart unmercifully.

    Also yes a 12700K on a DDR4 and a DDR5 platform for comparison is a good idea. Hindsight's 20/20. I'M SO SORRY. -np

  2. AM4 the win!

  3. Isn't this just a comparison between current gen and old gen. Not comparing ram, but ram and CPU. Video title is kinda misleading

  4. 4:50 hmm that's only SC vs DC but als 16 Gigs vs 32 Gigs

  5. In slovakia the ddr4 is almost the same price as ddr5 🫠

  6. you know it's bad when a big channel buys only 16gb for rigs featured in a video.

  7. 16 gb of mem .. yeah no

  8. Missed the perfect opportunity to compare the i7 with ddr4 against ddr5

  9. about 6 months ago I dug out several damaged or destroyed computers from a local pc shop's dumpster. I found at least one working part in each, and ended up with a free 5070, b750 gaming plus wifi, a full (UNOPENED) kit of DDR5 Gskill memory, 2 used 2TB 990 Pro's, and a seasonic 1300W PSU. I bought a ryzen 7 9700x off some crackhead on marketplace for 190 bucks, and suddenly I had a killer rig for damn near nothing!

  10. yeah this does not help i wish they did test same proc different rams

  11. In all this RAM/SSD pricing crazyness I managed to buy a second hand mini itx system:
    ASUS ROG Strix B660-I

    i7 12700k
    32GB DDR5
    RTX3070

For a $1000. Which is a pretty good price in today's market if you ask me.

  12. You started the video comparing the DDR4 and ddr5 and specifically mention the dual support for Intel CPU…. So why didn't you compare the 12700k DDR4 and ddr5.
    Like really …

  13. Never in my life have a got a video made exactly what i was wondering more than this i have that exact AM4 pc and want to upgrade but dont want to spend ddr5 price. This answered all my questions

  14. Biggest issue here is 16 GB is just not enough and especially shouldn't be paired with a 7800 X 3D

  15. You have Intel that support dd4 and ddr5 but compare with Ryzen CPU on ddr5? Why not make test on Intel with ddr5 and then ddr4?

  16. Bro..JUST GATEKEEP TS 🙏

  17. Too late to the party, and did not even perform the obvious test of the same intel processor with different memory, the support of both being the reason for attention. What was the point when "old is probably fine" is the only actual conclusion. This video could have been a WAN show comment.

  18. Lowest effort videos. At least move around the map, go to transition regions in the map and get into heavy game play instead of taking screenshots from starting locations as if that's indicative of the entire game's performance.

  19. At this rate in 2 weeks I’ll be looking to get a good deal for 2 sticks of DDR -2 💀

  20. This video is useless… 3 Months too late. Do not waste our time watching it. DDR4 prices are high (Barely cheaper than DDR5) and the motherboards+processors for AM4 are super expensive

  21. Love it when the other writers get to lead a video like this! Gives a different (in a good, fresh way) vibe to the videos. Great stuff Plouff!

  22. Glad Piloof got his hair don for the bit😂🤣😂🤣😂

  23. Why introduce Intel Blue corner Right and AMD Red corner left and then sawp the positioning for the part list to swap back in the next shot??? 1:17

  24. If you’re making videos on CPU/RAM performance where are all the esport titles! This is ridiculous.

CS2, Marvel Rivals, R6, COD, Apex. Games that care about CPU & RAM timings. Everyone else just buy a better GPU.

  25. Yeah that Video is waaaay too late to the party

  26. Linus, i hope you are reading this. Jake and alex have done a lot for this channel. Your diy and networking projects are in hiccups. Hearing what Jake had to say about his pay, prob you didnt give them enough credits for their work. Looking back, prob you shouldve hire 90 people instead of 100 to give more money to the old guys for dedication and macro managing.. Dont let the people under you struggle, i know the market dictates their pay, but most of the time treating people better than others yield better results. Just my 2 cents.

  27. Just an FYI with Civ games for benchmarks: you should probably time turns to test CPUs because the cpu isn't really busy when just looking around the map.

Especially later in the game turns can take a LONG time on some CPUs (30-60s on my 5900x)

  28. Uograde path? If there will still be any affordable parts for consumer in the future.

  29. I still managed to snag a used kit of HyperX Fury beast 3000mhz Cl15 2x8gb RGB for just $60 was that a good deal?

  30. Comparing the same cou on ddr4 vs ddr5 would have been interesting

  31. Bro didnt test shooters, that are much more cpu bound. Cs or battlefield 6 will show massive differences

  32. Price is already way too high for RAM. You kinda late boys.

  33. 1:03 that's a different weight in feet

  34. How is Dance Dance Revolution going to fix this?

  35. "The Solution to the RAM Crisis is… DDR4???"
No. In Europe, ddr4 went up in price even more than ddr5.

  36. Unfortunately a lot of people had the idea to switch to DDR4, so the prices also increased there. Now some people look for DDR3 Plattforms with the most prominent one being some chinese X99 LGA 2011-3 mainboards. A few of the Intel Xeon E5 v3/v4 CPUs actually support DDR3-1866 with the fastest one being the 22-core Intel Xeon E5-2696 v4 that i personally use (luckily with DDR4 because it supports both memory types) and i bought it refurbished on eBay for a laughable 54 € ~ 58 $ and i get similar Multi-Core performance like a modern 8-core CPU like the 7800X3D (applications and not gaming).

  37. I got adata 16gb 4800 ddr5 single stick for 130usd😢. Guys, Is it worth it?

    Paired it with r5 7500F.

I know bad time to build pc but recently got a job and had enough to spend…😅

  38. Honestly you’re better off finding deals on open box prebuilt desktops right now and pulling the ram and ssd out then selling the parts you don’t need to make some money back. Or just hold what you got if it’s current enough.

  39. I'm not paying ddr5 prices i have 32gb of ddr4, installed a 9060xt last month, and just bought a 12th gen i9 to replace my 12th gen i5. I should be good for a few years. Might want to upgrade my gpu in a two or three years, but hopefully the market has corrected itself by then.

  40. why does everyone skip the 9900x3d? always 9800 and the 9950x3d

  41. I got a 12700kf and z690 for 260 last year and i won't need to upgrade for atleast 3 years

  42. lmao cpu test in gpu bottlenecked scenarios is crazy also no one really use native resolution anymore so the second you use upscaling 7800x3d will beat the shit out of them

  43. This is exactly why I'm not upgrading from what I have now; Asrock Z590, Core i9-11900K, 64GB DDR4 3200 RAM, RTX 3080 10GB, 512GB NVMe, EVGA Supernova P2 1000 watt 80+ Platinum, 240MM AIO and an Asus 32" 1440P Display. All this stuff is used and I've got less than $1200 in the entire system. I'm good for a long while.

  44. Finally someone made a test that is showing how much of a myth is X3D in normal scenarios not fullhd low settings to highlight when CPU is bottlnecking. If you buy extremely powerfull grapchics card you're not going to play in fullhd low and you don't need to overspend on x3d.

  45. Loved the video, i used to be the nerd who thought the most about 10-20fps difference in games, aaa titles

But now when I play i feel FPS do not matter…
There is no need to spend more if u use your pc to work or even gaming

Deciding to upgrade from i3 10th gen 1660 super to i4 14400f with 5060ti 16gb (already own it) with the existing ddr4 16gb ram

Best/affordable decision in this situation according to me

If things were right with ram prices I would have gone with 7500/7600x

  46. This video is not doing well views wise. Concerning. Is LTT losing its audience and is this the beginning of a downfall
