So at 8:54 who's right, me or Aly? Is the automation annoying or amazing?
For me to much automation ruins it. I use voice commands for 70-80% and automations on little things I don’t want to deal with. Like the patio/front lights turning on/off each night. Game room ambient lights automatic. A lamp just to let me know when it’s about bedtime. Holiday lights.
in regard to the groceries: set the shops where she usually goes for groceries up as zone. then create an automation where you're notified when she comes home within a certain amount of time after leaving those shops. You could also set it up that it only triggers if she's been at one or more of those shops for a certain amount of time, so you're not triggered when she only buys a can of coke or a pack of gum 🙂
Could you put a contact sensor on the back car door to see if it opens when she gets home? Might break because it’ll get disconnected from WiFi every time the car leaves the house
For #13, you could define a zone for the grocery store. If she goes to the store for x minutes then returns home she has groceries.
How about she just calls you or sends you a text when she's approaching home with groceries.
My daughters are 6 (twins) and I worry about them being able to find partners because of the niahlism of this generation. They have it harder than I did. Keep trying to shine light in the darkness… I'll do the same
Not smart-home related:in Google Maps, there is a location sharing option for "Notifications," and you can set an alert/notification so when the person who is sharing with you arrives or leaves a set location, you get a pop-up. "Aly just arrived at Whole Foods," 20 min later, "Aly just left Whole Foods." You can do the same thing for a business near the house, or just the house, "Ally just arrived Home," and that way you know if she's been to the store, and just arriving, you can get up and go outside.
If Ally met my wife, they would have a lot to talk about.
Great video i feel like knowing what didnt work is a lot better than knowing what did so u know what not to do. Moved into a new house recently so saving for some smart devices, all lights are smart just need some sensors. Also, your looking great, a whole lot slimmer, keep up the good work!
Why not put the pressure sensor from the dead automation in your kitchen in the back of the car that way if she puts anything in the back of the car like the groceries on the pressure sensor you can have it alert you when she gets home. In addition, if you wanna go even higher on the approval rating, get one of them trunk organizers, and situated right over top of the pressure pad so she puts the groceries in the trunk organizer and then you just picked the whole organizer up and bring it inside.
For the groceries…. You could get that new Aqara P100 and attach it to the inside of the trunk … And have it notify you if your wife is home and she opens the trunk.
I have my Tesla API tied into Home Assistant. You can set up an automation that reminds you to plug it in if it’s not already charging and it’s below a certain threshold of battery. That’s worked well for me. I have it check at 10pm everyday or 30 minutes after I arrive if I arrive home after 10pm. Also, can set up an automation to open your charging door when you arrive home.
Regarding the garage door, just greet her everytime she comes home and help her out. She might appreciate you bringing her handbag in if she has no groceries.😊
We invented the dishwasher in 1886.
The fact that your weather doesn't change sounds so boring. I couldn't live without the change of seasons.
"The Outlaw Torn"… you know the way to a guy's heart brother!
Can frigate detect groceries? Or check how quickly the garage is closed without groceries, then add 20 sec (arbitrary number that sounds good) and have frigate detect someone holding a package or trunk left open. Oh…put a door sensor on the trunk (inside of course) and if it is left open for 10 sec, send the notification to help
Reed I would love to see that automation. Make a return because you guys can enjoy movie instead of waste time on your phones and if it gets a little repetitive, maybe you can make it so it’s like a weekend thing on a non-busy Friday night a family night might be even better that way it’s perfect for you aly and maybe even your kids
I automated my wife to call me every time she gets home with groceries. This automation works 99% of the time.
Accurate Vs snappiness.
Set zones for grocery shops.
Automation, If she's detected in one of those zones for >10mins then set a "Shopping incoming" boolean and then ping you a notification to let you know she'll be coming with groceries soon so you're primed to help.
Second automation for her as she enters the home zone and the "Shopping incoming" boolean is on, then send you a notification and turn the boolean off.
Addendum: Part of the nighttime/sleep automations, reset the boolean to off in case it was somehow accidentally left on.

Lesson 13 u can have the notification help with groceries button that she can press and it will notify the kids/house
Love your channel bro ❤ Re the grocery do you have a single store or couple of stores you shop at? If so flick a Boolean on if Ally enters that zone for 5 or more min. Then next time she comes home and Boolean is true chances are she has groceries.
Damn bro how many rooms does your house has
Thanks Reed.
Why doesn't your house close it's own doors?
Machine vision could fix that grocery issue. Or even just a wireless contact sensor on the hatchback.
No automation needed to notify you that groceries need to be unloaded. I message my husband that I am leaving the grocery store now and want help unloading groceries. He is waiting for me when I get home.
I used to set automations to set scenes like movie with Tap to Alexa. Which is what I use as an alternative for buttons. But I set the lights manually that it felt that the automation more of a gimmick. I use Alexa Plus, and I need to remove the dumb motion switch for a mmWave and Smart Switch because it doesn't work well and clean up the unused automations
Why don't you add locations to HA and track if she's at any of the stores for X minutes? Then you'll know she's home and came from the store at some point. Door open + was at the store + person arrived home.
No automation needed for the groceries. My wife just calls me a minute before she gets home or from the driveway to come help with whatever, not just groceries. Not everything needs an automation. She knows if she needs help or not.
For the grocery automation, use her location to trigger when she has visited the grocery store and launch when she arrives home. I can do this using Life 360. (I may just do this myself now.)
07:57 Straighten that wrist! Big love to a new violist!
Could you do an automation where she leaves the grocery store you get notified
