Steam does have numerous hubs and ways to discover users. They're just vestigial and badly in need of an overhaul.

am I crazy or is <10% NOT a significant amount of users? It still sucks that discord is going through with it but why make such a dumb statement
not to be a problem, but i use discord mostly for it's forms… if not only for it's forms… that is because of the community of game testers and the place where games ask for feedback.
I love matrix but I hate inconsistency between clients, there's always all these little things nobody cares to ever fix
you forgot the part in the "community" segment which was the negative part which is that child predator groups are so easy to access through the discovery tab and this has been proven and documented several times

During the Discord voice chat outage a few days ago, we tried multiple solutions, with the result of not being able to use steam chat as is did not work on some devices running Linux. We then tried in game voice chat, which worked however felt clunky. After that we spun up a mumble server. This worked flawlessly for voice however did not allow files in chat. After the outage we switched back to Discord.
Use IRC worked in the 90s, works now
Unfortunately this doesn't actually fix any of my issues. All of my friends play on different systems: I play on a linux pc, two of my friends play on a windows pc, one of my friends plays on a mac, some of my friends have consoles and use discord on their phone, hell one of my friends only uses the discord web interface. Until something comes along that supports all of these platforms, and has the ease of use that my friends can use it, I'm not going to be able to make the switch.
This is trash. we need a REAL FOREVER OPEN SOURCE platform like discord.

Discord is getting ahead of inevitable Internet ID laws that WILL be passed in the next 10 years, any service that tries to operate in the communication market will face the same regulation. I get not wanting to expose yourself and 100% support that but the writing is on the wall. In my opinion discord is seeing that, and is trying to get ahead of any laws that will be 10x stricter than what discord is doing now.
Security is a different topic, discord is nowhere near trustworthy with customer data, barely any service is. If they're not actively selling your data then its annual data breaches "oops all your data is public now". The only way security even half-works in this situation is if, like South Korea, there is a government issued code or verification you can give whenever you need to identify yourself online. The government is obviously not very secure either, but I at least trust them more than Sony or Microsoft, plus they have at least a nominal responsibility to protect people's privacy so if there was a massive data breach on the lap of the federal government there would hopefully be some sort of accountability for that (probably not though)
