To no ones surprise, Google Chrome knows how to eat. What IS actually surprising is HOW much it can eat. Since the last time we tried this experiment, we’ve seen OS upgrades, Hardware upgrades, and even testing upgrades. The only thing left to see is how many tabs you can open with 1.5 TB of RAM. What's up with the idiotic "memory training" of the RAM? How come no PC needs that, no matter how much RAM and power it has? What happens is that it will reject a lot of RAM, even though it is up to specs, I would assume that it is just the manufacturer overcharging for their own RAM while discriminating (can't be "trained") other manufacturers lower priced RAM. (by the way this existed way before the RAM price crisis)
if anybody has any concrete information about this RAM training, do let us know.
You could play minecraft so hard on that thing.
It is kinda insane how loud these servers are, totally needlessly and even more astonishing: Spending an insane amount of money (5 digits) for such a server, while they use the shittiest insanely loudest fans available, probably saving a few cents compared to the much more silent ones.
BTW, most people still don't know this: DDR5 does not need ECC RAM anymore, because it has it built in by default.
I hope Chrome devs read this: Just killing render processes helps a lot to keep it running, but at 10000 tabs or more other problems happen: If the monitor changes and dpi settings change, it will freeze for minutes, probably updating all the tabs. Also restore is very slow compared to firefox, which restores instantly. I hope they can do more tests using your scripts.
i am using an old QC AMD A8 APU from 2013 or older with 24GB DDR3 Ram and a secondary old Intel 80GB SSD for the windows paging file and i can open about 500-1000 tabs before it says its out of memory. For comparison my 2024 M3 iMac with 8GB of Ram and 256GB fast SSD stops after just about 100 tabs with terrible slow down to the point where i cant even shutdown or restart the sysem. I need to long press the power button to force a shutdown
Is 1.5 TB of RAM enough to run all your browser tabs? It seems we’ve reached a point where the browser has become a ravenous living creature; the more RAM you feed it, the hungrier it gets! 💻 While most of us struggle with 8 or 16 GB, this experiment proves that the browser will always find a way to make your computer cry for help. It seems we need a 'diet' for our tabs instead of more hardware!
Yeah I got a sick computer. 200 cores and 1.5TB of ram. What do I do with with? Oh, just browse the web.
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I wonder what it's like without hardware acceleration since it would purely only be using the CPU for these tasks. It could potentially be more stable without the GPU hitting that VRAM wall.
LTT also did a video titled "I've never seen anything like this… – 6TB of RAM in one PC!" five years ago.
